Skepticon: Friday 4pm Classism: From Honey Boo Boo to Anderson Cooper

Are you going to Skepticon 7?  Capital!

I am hosting a workshop about class and classism on Friday — about recognizing it and how we can address it.  A class on class, if you will.  You should come.  It’s gonna be fun.

Here’s a preview of some things I may talk about:

So much of prejudice is the unwillingness to take a certain kind of people seriously– a refusal to give weight to what they have to say, to believe that their views are carefully considered and based in evidence. Unfortunately, the refusal to take people without financial privilege seriously is easily cloaked as something else– it’s difficult to get some people to even acknowledge that the kind of stereotypes they’re comfortable using even have anything to do with financial means, because lack of financial means seems to just “go with” whatever they think they’re making fun of.

@mudpuddles: Yep, that is a legit quote from His A-holiness Pope Dawkins. You can still find it on his twitter if you are willing to invest the time. Me, I’m done with Dawkins, as this is actually one of the LESS reprehensible things he has said in recent time.
