Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) has taken the bold step of being the most prominent asshole to try to use the tragedy in Colorado to further a political agenda. That political agenda is talk about how atheists are destroying the country. From HuffPo:
“People say … where was God in all of this?” Gohmert said. “We’ve threatened high school graduation participations, if they use God’s name, they’re going to be jailed … I mean that kind of stuff. Where was God? What have we done with God? We don’t want him around. I kind of like his protective hand being present.”
That’s right. Someone like Max Nielson challenging his high school graduation prayer are the reason some cruel, heartless man shot dozens of people at a movie. And Gohmert apparently lives in a strange alternate universe where people trying to get others not to force them to pray is exactly like sending someone to prison for saying the word “God”.
The tragedy is horrific enough, using it to score political points is despicable.

He is the third politician I have counted who is trying to score political points off of the tragedy.
But no, yeah, people who play video games are totally desensitized to violence. That’s why all the nerds are somber and depressed today.

Mr. Gohmert is a leading candidate for dumbest person in Congress, a competition that is highly competitive and includes such worthies as Steve King, Michele Bachmann, Allen West, just to mention a few. They provide much of the comedic fodder for former stand up comedian Ed Brayton’s blog.

I don’t recall hearing anyone threated with jail time for having a mandatory graduation prayer. More “lying for Jesus” perhaps?

We struggle to understand because Hate is Irrational. We can’t fix crazy so instead just expect every far left or far right crackpot to use this as a reason to try to impose their “fix” on all of society to the detriment to all of us.

Gomert is a United States Congressman, he may be dumb as a bag of hammers but he’s firmly in the republican mainstream. Find me a “far left crackpot” with one tenth of his power please…

The Republican mainstream has moved to the far right. But you are correct, there’s no equivalent on the left.

Exactly, please don’t bust out tired “both sides do it” cliches people. There isn’t a liberal anywhere near power that is one tenth as despicable as Gomert.

Funnily enough, God was invoked yesterday by George Zimmerman to justify the shooting of an innocent person. God should really try to be more consistent.

“I kind of like his protective hand being present.”
I kind of don’t like being touched with out consent. When god wants to talk, we’ll see.
I’ve let his office know I’m not happy.

Also, not enough people believe in bigfoot, UFOs, and…let’s say… Harry Potter.
How are we to know which disbelief in which thing to what degree caused this massacre?
I’ll just go with the one I think more people should believe in and call it a day, as that is so much easier than finding the real answers that probably won’t be all that satisfying anyway.

The guy was a Christian according to the neighbors:
“A neighbor, Tom Mai, told reporters on the block that Holmes was a shy, well-mannered kid, clean cut and responsible, who was very active in the church. The Associated Press reported that the family attended a Presbyterian church and threw a quiet Christmas party for neighbors. Holmes had trouble finding work after college, Mai said, and then went off to graduate school.”
