Andy Murray has won plaudits for correcting a BBC presenter who congratulated him on being the first tennis player to win two Olympic gold medals — a feat already achieved, and outdone, by the Williams sisters.

Murray, the London gold medallist, became the first tennis player to defend an Olympic singles title after defeating Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 4-6, 6-2,7-5 in an epic final in Rio.

After the match, the 2016 Wimbledon champ spoke to the BBC’s John Inverdale, who congratulated the Briton on being “the first person ever to win two Olympic gold medals”.

“Well, to defend the singles title … I think Venus and Serena won about four each,” Murray responded.
He was correct. Venus and Serena Williams won individual gold medals in 2000 and 2012 respectively, as well as three doubles titles together in Sydney, Beijing and London.

Murray said last year he had become a feminist after seeing the way his coach Amelie Mauresmo was treated by critics and the media.
