Some folks are trying to raise money for MSF (Doctors w/o Borders) by auctioning off autographed photos of some of the participants on the charity drive. Look at what Matt Dillahunty’s photo is up to. Now look at how much they’re bidding for mine.
I think if anything it wasn’t the best choice of photo, rather than subject. Your photo has a blurry blob blocking part of your face, and the lighting is less flattering than other photos/videos I’ve seen of you (the photo in your avatar looks super-awesome for example).
Maybe it’s because you look the part of the movie bad guy. You are the evil lawyer, the cowboy vampire, the Snidely Whiplash tying mythology to the train tracks and twirling your mustache as you make people face the oncoming train of reason. The heel of logic and critical thinking to the perceived face of faith. You wear the black hat, the cape and are the dark rider of science come to rudely pull people out of a bronze age world view where they grab at the benefits of modern discoveries and engineering while trying to destroy the foundations on which they were built.
Though you’d think that would make your photo more desirable..
Im down for $242. If I have to bid up to $342, I expect a personal phone call Aaron. If we go to 1042, you need to keep me on the rolodex for the next time you’re in Oregon.
Revyloution, your bid is still valid. The max bid remains hidden. Someone could run the bid up incrementally, till it surpasses your bid, then their bid would be the new high bid.
…then you place a new max bid for yourself.
Or wait till the the auction is about to end, then swoop in and snipe the auction with a last maximum number. This leaves others with little time to respond, and if your new max bid is high enough, they will have to make multiple incremental bids, and hopefully time runs out on them, and you get the item. Timing is everything. You have to complete your bid before the auction ends, but not too soon, or someone else can resnipe you.
Sniping 101.
But in the case of a charity event, Im not sure sniping would be….charitable?
Aron Ra is one of the "YouTube atheists" and an advocate for rationalism in science classrooms. He grew up in an exclusively creationist environment where he felt like a lonely outcast just for understanding evolution, let alone accepting it. Being raised in a mostly-Mormon family encouraged him to explore other denominations and eventually non-Abrahamic spiritualism before rejecting faith-based beliefs altogether. He was drawn into activism when the Religious Right dominated his state's Board of Education, and began undermining education in history, health, science, and social studies. His videos often focus on evolution and the evidence indicating an interrelated tree of life. His series summarizing the 'Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism' and his subsequent series, 'Falsifying Phylogeny' (including the Phylogeny Challenge') have been mirrored, featured, referenced, and recommended by many professional scientists, secularists, and educators, and has attracted more than 60,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel.

It may make you feel better that you’re way ahead of PZ Myers so far, though.

The mustache wax adds a sort of Salvador Dali effect. Which is not to say that Aron Ra is surreal.

I’m reminded of one instance where I directed a troll to one of your videos and his only response was that you looked like “a hooligan.”
