Age of Kali – Uber, Rape and Indian Corruption

For many people who have been paying attention, Uber got into India and was revolutionising the Taxi Industry here in a deep way.

Here is the thing? My place is 3 Km from the hospital in Rural India. I get a bus, lifts and cycle to work. Sometimes (like today) I end up taking an auto rickshaw which is the equivalent of a New York Yellow Cab. These things are (also yellow) everywhere but  they hold a monopoly over pick up rides.

This means they don’t have to utilise a meter. They can charge whatever they feel like and if you are shit out of luck, you have to pay them. I pay around Rs. 160 a day if I have to take them. Not a large amount of money if you are converting from pounds but a sizeable amount if you live in India. To break that habit, I purchased a bicycle figuring the 4000 rupee outlay would save me money in the long term. It has. The price of showing up to work sweaty is a small one though but “India is hot and I sweat at work anyways, what’s sweating 15 minutes before I get to work going to do to me?

But along comes Uber. A non union taxi service which gave back the power of the taxi to the consumer. What we began to see was a gradual erosion of the monopoly. While I like Unions, I think  they should work towards the benefit of the service rather than simply creating a monopoly of shitty quality like in India.

But when an Uber driver raped an Indian woman? The government of Delhi banned the service, blaming it for hiding rapists. And I disagree. I was skeptical so I did some poking around the claim.

How To Deal With Anti-Vaccine Parents

As the occurrence of vaccine-preventable diseases declines, the challenge of communicating the risk of not being immunized increases.Every situation is unique; parents have diverse concerns for various reasons. These can be cultural, religious or even personal. Many believe there is a link between some diseases and immunisations or believe in strange ideas perpetrated by unscrupulous online media. It’s no secret.

Blogs like this actually are in the minority. I understand my blog is in the medium sized category. I can get around 1500 to 2000 hits a day. What I get in a month Natural News often gets in a day. It racks up 8 MILLION views. If a 1000 hits equated to $1 it would be large enough to be making around 9000 dollars A MONTH and that is without sales of quackery and speaking fees and all the other things Mike Adams gets. Considering the level of research and the harm it causes it is quite shocking. [Read more…]

Not the Ducks! -Push Back Against Doctors

One of the amusing things in general about the anti-vax is their unwillingness to be able to do work. I do get some amusing hate mail. Mostly its the “Fuck You baby Killer” variety which is a dig on the fact for a short period, I was FTB’s official abortionist. See? I used to do abortions and quite frankly I don’t think it is any of my business judging the people who have abortions for their situations. It is their choice. If you are against abortion then don’t have one.

I got sent this as a sort of “dagger through the heart” post meant to end my stance on vaccination. I figure I should do this as a two parter. So let’s look at the first “letter to doctors”. This one from someone speaking as a parent.

If someone said “speaking as a parent, I think it is okay to mix water and electricity” we would consider them shoddy parents. Yet the same sort of logic is considered acceptable. Parents often make poor decisions with regards to children’s healthcare and that is fine. However don’t portray yourself as an equal in terms of knowledge. One of the prices of my education is realising how much I don’t know. A lot of my medical posts are after a read through of the literature and text books.  [Read more…]

On Shirtgate…

A lot of people have been discussing Matt Taylor (the scientist who helped land a probe on a comet) and his choice of shirt and how it makes women uncomfortable and is part of the problem with regards to few women in STEM fields. And a lot of people have been defending it. This is for them.

Not the Ducks! – Jennifer Marguilis and 45 Reasons to Not Have a Home Birth

These were put up by Home Birth activist Jennifer Marguilis. It’s a satirical attack on the practice of Obs/Gynae while trying to encourage more women to utilise an often ignored form of quackery.

Home Births are an often ignored form of quackery. While not as pervasive as homeopathy, a lack of female skeptics has meant that this issue has generally not seen as much airplay as anti-vaccination and homeopath quackery. I myself came across this on a post on herbal medicine for deliveries and how a midwife was using “Natural Methods” rather than our evil medicine which is powered by the souls of forsaken children.

Open Heart Surgery

It’s a pretty big list but let’s have some fun with it! And yes this is a mainly “obs/gynae post”. Male readers may go cross eyed and stare uncomfortably at their wives. [Read more…]

Jenny McCarthy – It’s not the Playboy, it’s the statements

I felt the same way as being attacked when I posed for Playboy. To me, it’s a collective fear I think people have. If they’re not reading my books or doing the work on what I’ve been saying, I can understand why they would have hateful feelings. But read what I’ve said!… I’m done talking about it.”

Jenny McCarthy is rather irked that we have held her to her words. [Read more…]

A Gay Plague

You were thinking about AIDS right? When you saw the title?

The truth is? HIV and AIDS ravage the MSM community. Many progressives don’t like the statistics but medically speaking? 5% of the population should not be around 50% of the cases. Now the argument is quite simple. Each gay man is a bigger part of the population due to their small numbers. Secondly? Gay men never had much reason for condoms before HIV so the disease had time to spread. And early hook up culture among MSM was quite promiscuous so the disease spread quickly during it’s latency period. So much so that being gay is still a big risk for HIV infection.

And HIV killed the female condom and other barrier methods of contraception. The male condom is less prone to failing and things like the cervical cap didn’t stop the spread of the disease.

But there is another disease with a rising association (falsely) with homosexuality. [Read more…]

The Anti-Vax Prey on Indians

One of the problems with the anti-vax is that when you point out the developing world, they generally ignore the deadly threat of disease and instead come up with arguments about sanitation. To them sanitation ONLY saves lives.

I often write about disease in India and the various things people are doing to fight the spread of such deadly diseases. And often the anti-vax do the same but with their particular spin. While most western pro-vax sources tend to ignore these because they generally  are unaware of the level of vaccination in the developing world.  [Read more…]

Epidemic – Ebola Conspiracies in Liberia

There are a lot of conspiracy theories knocking around at the moment with regards to ebola. Everything from cover ups to magical Jewish conspiracy theories exist with regards to this deadly disease.

Richard Dawkins once said that the garden was beautiful enough without there having to be fairies at the bottom of the garden. I think this is the opposite. Ebola is a deadly disease without there being a need to involve allege Jewish Super Science. [Read more…]
