A Response To A Pro-Life Atheist and The Friendly Atheist

I am a fan of Hemant Mehta, as one of the few asian atheists online, reading his work got me writing my own stuff.

However I disagree with his guest blogger, Kristine Kruszelnicki who is the president of the Pro-Life Humanists.

I value free speech and differing opinions. I figure Hemant Mehta has the same ideas, hence putting up an ideology that is clearly anti-thetical to the secular values which include the right of women to get an abortion.

PZ Myers has already done the developmental biology side of this, so let us do the humanitarian side of things. [Read more...]

Abortion Myths Debunked

Christian Post’s pro-life brigade were out in force over the week.

The problem with such reporting is that it’s an outright lie. And the best lies told are the ones where the teller believes in the same lie.

So me saying “beware the dinner witch! She will eat you if you don’t eat your broccoli” is an effective lie. A kid may believe in it but slowly question it. It’s why the Dinner Witch, Santa and the Tooth Fairy “die” as beliefs at a certain age. We may joke about them and enforce the belief when younger but later on we become less supportive. The belief dies because we don’t believe in it.

To me the belief in a god doesn’t die out because the lie is believed. Everyone believes the story of a god so belief in said god is enforced and enhanced.

It’s the same with abortion. How many pro-lifers genuinely believe the nonsense that they sprout? [Read more...]

The Corkscrew – An Idiot’s Guide to Safe Sex

[warning]This is an article about sex. The kind you learn on the discovery channel. The goal of this is to not just educate but also amuse because sex isn’t just serious. If you cannot laugh about sex then I am afraid you aren’t doing it right! And in order to laugh about sex you need to take some precautions. This is a collection of useful and common ideas, concepts and things that can be done. Now all of this advice may be suitable for your children or if you are children. So I am putting on a warning on this one. This is adult material. Not because it’s titillating but because really you should be getting this advice from a real person. I am on the Internet. I don’t have any responsibility to be honest. I can suggest that the ideal contraception is to chew garlic. This has to be taken in context and this is mainly to help adults think of ways to teach their kids about a subject that is awkward and frankly kind of weird to discuss. No one likes mum or dad explaining what a blowjob is and why it’s fun. No parent really wants to explain the importance of anal safety or safe words or anything outside that.

So I got help. Urvasi was a Hijra sex worker and is one of the success stories in leaving  sex work and instead moving to a supporting role where she provides sex education in order to fight the spread of disease and human beings in one fell swoop. And a lot of her ideas are about thinking sideways and we need to think like a corkscrew when it comes to educating people about contraception. Because there are two things that are required. The equipment and the mindset. And her method was instrumental in some of the successes we had out here.

Thinking like a corkscrew and losing some inhibitions can help talk about safe sex. I mean who best to talk about safe sex than the men and women who’s livelihoods depend on it? Who best to talk about encouraging compliance too?

So if you are sitting comfortably, let’s think a little bit corkscrewy.

The advice provided will be universal where possible[/warning]

It’s Not Empowerment, It’s Quackery

Prior to the Obstetric/Gynaecological adoption of abortion, it was one of the most riskiest procedures out there. Abortions historically have had some of the worst mortality rates and were generally a practice of last resorts.

We turned it into an outpatient procedure with an incredibly low mortality rate. There are different indications for abortions and what procedure needs to be done depending on the health of the mother and the gestational age of the foetus.

There is a large amount of quackery aimed at women that is aimed almost exclusively under the notion that it is feminist. It’s not. The adoption of medical abortion empowered women far more than the quacks. However doctors are rarely part of the dialogue, so you instead saw a massive movement to push the notion that medicine is anti-female. And many women believe in it.

Medicine doesn’t seem to have time for the patient because most doctors have massive queues of people who wish to see them. People are busy and so have to juggle patients. Not so in the private sector and indeed the Alt/Med brigade where the demand is low so they can see you for 15 to 30 minutes knowing full well there is no one being put out by the long consult.

I read this on Miri’s blog whiich lead me to the original post. And it made me bloody mad. [Read more...]

A Taste of Things to Come – Rise of the Backstreet Abortionist

American women have lost a great deal of freedom in the past few weeks. All across the USA various states are planning to either reduce funding to bodies such as Planned Parenthood or to try and make abortions more difficult to perform and obtain. South Dakota has passed laws to reduce the period of abortion to just 20 weeks. Women have to undergo a series of unnecessary and traumatic procedures just to decide what to do with their own bodies. Recently we have seen the rise of “stealth” pro-life and the shutting down of clinics by making other laws hard to abide by.

[warning]TW – Abortion/Experiences[/warning]

The most recent one being Texas. After the epic filibuster by Wendy Davis, hopes were up that women in Texas would be safe but it was not to be. Rick Perry pushed the bill through. Women in Texas are not allowed to get proper basic healthcare any more.

That’s right. Abortions are considered BASIC Obstetric and Gynaecology. The right to one is basic control over reproduction. Many of my patients have BETTER (read it and weep America) access to contraceptives, real honest sex education, family planning and abortion than Texan women.  [Read more...]

You will know them by their love

Wendy Davis has become a house hold name for her epic filibuster.

On Friday, Senators convened to debate the Texas Abortion Bill. But one thing missing? The objections this time were simply ignored.

The Texas Abortion bill is a religious bill. I don’t think anyone is a fan of abortion. It is a medical procedure. Most sensible humans aren’t having one for “lolz”. Yes there are some people who abuse it but frankly there are people who abuse chocolate and we don’t legislate that and chocolate is infinitely deadlier than abortions (People die from diabetes and cardio-vascular issues more regularly than abortions after all).
