Female Genital Mutilation – An Expansion to the Primer

This is not safe for work, this is not safe for life, this is not safe in general. The following contains images of FGM and vaginas. If you do not wish to see these then please do not read further.

What follows is an image and a discussion on Female Genital Mutilation. It is a complication of the procedure.

When we discuss why a medical condition should be made public particularly of genitals we forget that while people are squeamish, many will say that the usage of squeamish images is insulting to the victims.

How on earth are we to discuss a problem. How are we to discuss a procedure. How are we to discuss the damage caused.

How are we to do ANY of these things without knowing what it looks like? Hence my warning.

An Islamic Defence of FGM

FGM is on the rise in the USA, so I figured I should resurrect an old piece of fundamentalism. The usage of Islam to defend Female Genital Mutilation is a major stumbling block in achieving progress.

This is a major issue with fighting the practice, however let us be clear here. The practice is also found among Christian communities, not just Muslims. It’s just that Islam has a method of defending culture.

And the defence of the practice is frankly reprehensible. What we do know is the Koran NOT prescribing this as a novel thing. We know the practice pre-dates Islam and that the Koran merely maintains the Status Quo in the same way that the Bible promotes the Status Quo of slavery. [Read more...]

Female Genital Mutilation – A Nuanced Look at the First Trial

Dr Dhanuson Dharmasena is one of the first people to be charged in the UK under a landmark case allowing for the prosecution of people involved in aiding and abetting the crime of female genital mutilation.

Female Genital Mutilation is not a good practice. I have long stood against it. However I have had issues with the UK’s laws with regards to Female Genital Mutilation. Doctors were told to fight the practice with little or no training or worse? No idea of how to deal with children at risk.

The point is? We don’t want to take children away from parents. We don’t want young girls to get cut. We also don’t want parents to not bring their kids to see the doctor for fear of being arrested.

But that being said? Prosecutions need to occur. [Read more...]

You Need A Man!

Ah Suzanne Venker!

We meet again!

Well this time she’s on Fox telling ladies how they really need a man and that not having a man is super duper bad. Now I am not saying having a boyfriend and a husband is a bad thing, I am just saying that it isn’t the philosopher’s stone and El Dorado rolled into one that people keep insisting it is. Age of Kali – It’s Been a Year

It’s been nearly a year since India’s idea about women changed.

In every  feminist revolution there has been a precipitating event, a single instance that changed the way we thought about things. That made us all sit up and change.

And that event in India was the Nirbhaya rape and subsequent death.

Women and Men fought for changes, they tried to change a system of judiciary that was incredibly biased against rape victims. They tried to change the way the police thought about rape and sexual harassment and these are still ongoing struggles with some knee jerk tragedies such as the expansion of the death penalty in India.

However the fact that change is coming. You can smell it on the wind. The dialogue has changed from “It’s your fault” to “It’s not” and from “Don’t Go Out” to “Take precautions”.

A Voice for Me – A Firestorm of Helmet Bunnies, Sluts and Rape

[important]TW- Rape, Victim Blaming, Suicide, Depression[/important]

I recently came across this word in a twitter discussion (OKAY, Raging Argument) with Dean Esmay and Judgy Bitch. For those who don’t know who these are, Dean Esmay is one of the big shots up at A Voice for Men and Judgy Bitch is a lady MRA who I came across when she was blaming the victim of the Steubenville rape.

And this argument boiled down to the same “nonsense” that Thunderfoot was flogging. That rape victims if they don’t take specific precautions are to blame to varying levels for their rapes.

And this term “Helmet Bunny” was an affront to me. [Read more...]
