On Shirtgate…

A lot of people have been discussing Matt Taylor (the scientist who helped land a probe on a comet) and his choice of shirt and how it makes women uncomfortable and is part of the problem with regards to few women in STEM fields. And a lot of people have been defending it. This is for them.

Not the Ducks! – Jennifer Marguilis and 45 Reasons to Not Have a Home Birth

These were put up by Home Birth activist Jennifer Marguilis. It’s a satirical attack on the practice of Obs/Gynae while trying to encourage more women to utilise an often ignored form of quackery.

Home Births are an often ignored form of quackery. While not as pervasive as homeopathy, a lack of female skeptics has meant that this issue has generally not seen as much airplay as anti-vaccination and homeopath quackery. I myself came across this on a post on herbal medicine for deliveries and how a midwife was using “Natural Methods” rather than our evil medicine which is powered by the souls of forsaken children.

Open Heart Surgery

It’s a pretty big list but let’s have some fun with it! And yes this is a mainly “obs/gynae post”. Male readers may go cross eyed and stare uncomfortably at their wives. [Read more…]

A Gay Plague

You were thinking about AIDS right? When you saw the title?

The truth is? HIV and AIDS ravage the MSM community. Many progressives don’t like the statistics but medically speaking? 5% of the population should not be around 50% of the cases. Now the argument is quite simple. Each gay man is a bigger part of the population due to their small numbers. Secondly? Gay men never had much reason for condoms before HIV so the disease had time to spread. And early hook up culture among MSM was quite promiscuous so the disease spread quickly during it’s latency period. So much so that being gay is still a big risk for HIV infection.

And HIV killed the female condom and other barrier methods of contraception. The male condom is less prone to failing and things like the cervical cap didn’t stop the spread of the disease.

But there is another disease with a rising association (falsely) with homosexuality. [Read more…]

The Anti-Vax Prey on Indians

One of the problems with the anti-vax is that when you point out the developing world, they generally ignore the deadly threat of disease and instead come up with arguments about sanitation. To them sanitation ONLY saves lives.

I often write about disease in India and the various things people are doing to fight the spread of such deadly diseases. And often the anti-vax do the same but with their particular spin. While most western pro-vax sources tend to ignore these because they generally  are unaware of the level of vaccination in the developing world.  [Read more…]

Baa!!! – An Idiot’s Guide to Herd Immunity

One of the things I realise is that the anti-vaccination lobby often utilise fairly unorthodox methodology to spread their ideas.

See? Science writing generally tends to stick to fairly well trodden paths. Even pop sci. Popular Science is science written to simplicity and provided with glossy photos and cool diagrams. But the thing with Pop Sci is that it generally sticks to the cool bits of science. It’s easy to sell this cool new rocket than it is to sell the basics.

It is why such magazines rarely advertise a new hygenic toilet despite that fact that is something basic that could save thousands if not millions of lives. It isn’t glamorous.

Neither is this.

Herd Immunity. I write this in response to the Financial Post’s resident quack, Lawrence Solomon. [Read more…]
