The Anti-vax lobby is under fire. I have long stated that the anti-vax lobby had it’s success due to the success of medicine.
See, we made diseases rare. The normal childhood diseases were few and far between and their impact was softened by our technology. With that comes complacency. The anti-vax lobby 150 years ago was laughed at because their scare mongering may have stopped people vaccinating, but those who vaccinated lived. People quickly changed their tune when their vaccinated neighbours lived and their kids died to smallpox. Reality had a harsh way of teaching people a lesson.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to make the same mistakes. I predicted that an anti-vax backlash would occur when the anti-vax got so successful that they destroyed the herd immunity of a western nation to the point that common diseases could return.
If you won’t learn by the carrot then unfortunately it is the stick. The price of Andrew Wakefield and the likes of Sherri Tenpenny, Mercola, Adams was increased disease. We are seeing record increases in common diseases that we were on the verge of eliminating.
The great fear is that the low vaccination rates in the west may translate to a disease that is genuinely a lot more deadly than Measles.
But the anti-vax won’t go down quietly. The benefit of not actually understanding immunology is that you can stick to nonsensically faulty arguments because they aren’t based on any real understanding of the situation. [Read more...]
You won’t believe how handy Wikipedia is to a medic in training, sometimes you just need to look something up. A condition, a drug or a procedure, and you don’t have a book to hand. And often you may not know which book the procedure is detailed, so what do you do?
See while Wikipedia is a public encyclopedia, it’s science sections are at least rigorously maintained. So if you need the basics you can just look it up. It’s good enough for a basic answer, if you need more details? Well, then you bust out your text books. [Read more...]
Female Genital Mutilation is not a good practice. I have long stood against it. However I have had issues with the UK’s laws with regards to Female Genital Mutilation. Doctors were told to fight the practice with little or no training or worse? No idea of how to deal with children at risk.
The point is? We don’t want to take children away from parents. We don’t want young girls to get cut. We also don’t want parents to not bring their kids to see the doctor for fear of being arrested.
But that being said? Prosecutions need to occur. [Read more...]
This… is a RPGesque style book about Bacteria and treatments.
And not only does it look gorgeous, it looks fun too! There are whole bunch of medical themed games to boot!
Prince Charles is at it again.
There is a problem with Prince Charles, unlike his mummy he doesn’t seem all that bothered about trying to interfere with the running of the UK. Now the problem here is that he provides a Royal Seal of Approval to idiot quacks.
He has been pushing for an acceptance of complementary medicine which is the Intelligent design to quackery’s creationism. It’s an attempt to obfuscate the value of alternative medicine by utilising real medicine and it in combination so that quacks can pretend and take credit for actions of doctors. [Read more...]
Hi Avicenna, great article. I’d just like to ask a question because this is definitely an area where I could stand to bone up on my technique.
“There is an absolute hand grenade of question that I have found turns the vaccination debate into an utter rout. How does the Immune System Function?”
Would you mind gaming this conversation out for me a little, either in comments or in a new posts? Let’s say the antivaxxer says either “How the hell should I know?” or gives an entirely wrong answer. Then what? Do you give this entire lecture about how it really works? Or is there a key point that will drive the point home, some major bit of information that you can use to make their ignorance really obvious?
Maybe you could provide a short Socratic dialogue of how you’ve seen this conversation go from there after you’ve tossed the grenade, or link to a forum thread or something?
Yesterday I wrote about Natural Birth, it’s a contentious issue with regards to body autonomy. A lot of women defend the practice as “It’s not dangerous” as the stats in home birth are skewed by Home Birth advocates and in the name of patient choice, an inferior system of care is touted and pushed as superior.
I wrote about the complete unreliability of the Midwives who promote this and the testimony of women who support it (It is mainly women since the entire practice wreaths itself in the trappings and language of feminism). [Read more...]
