In the wake of any tragedy come the gong bangers who try and push through political change based on the feelings that are running high after the tragedy.

Some of it is common sense like “fucking gun control” (because if your people require guns to feel safe then it’s indicative of a society that has broken down or where people are so powerless that EVEN if they had guns it would change nothing) the others less so. [Read more…]

A Voice for Me: Not You Too India!

In the light of the Delhi rapes you may have noticed a couple of the MRA websites have rushed to defend the “so called Rights” of men in India.

I does need to be repeated. Anyone who has read my blog is aware of the various “major” rapes that grip the news headlines out here. Rape is common place enough and India still doesn’t consider marital rape as rape.

But various websites and indeed the commentariat from such stellar places such as the Slymepit and a Voice for Men have shown up to defend the laws based on a variety of points ranging from “not reading the News Article” to “But I have to pay more for Nightclub Entry”.

Today’s “Won’t Someone Think Of the Menz” candidate is A Voice for Men and it’s David Cuspis. [Read more…]

In Defence of Piers Morgan

You know what? Someone has to do it… So I accept. I have an ulterior motive for this defence of Mr. Morgan…

We worked so hard to get rid of him, we don’t want him back…

Right… without further adieu, let’s plunge into this latest and greatest moronic pile of tripe courtesy of Larry Elder… I call shenanigans on this pile of utter wank on the basis of a simple grasp of American Law which the average “patriot” seems to forget. We dislike Morgan because he is an odious twit who’s barely legal usage of the paparazzi to dig dirt for his fish and chip wrapper of a paper. We dislike him because he was complicit in the phone hacking scandal. He is everything that is wrong with modern journalism and an emblem of tabloid journalism.

However the hate he receives has to be legit, not the moronic screed of a thousand “Patriots” who forget the laws of their own country! Jeffrey? Fetch me my fighting trousers…

It’s not Feminism Just Because it Claims to Empower Women

I know of a specific form of quackery aimed solely at women, by women.

Home Births. We aren’t discussing “Natural Birth” which often takes place in a hospital which is also a very quacktastic woo laden field of idiocy masquerading as feminism but at least occurs in a hospital setting so if anything goes wrong help is available. We are talking about home birth which is a more extreme form of that. This is a serious group of people who think your Ob/Gyn is a plot to take away your freedom and that the only option is the ancient methods of birthing as practiced by our ancestors. Which is like suggesting that your dentists is earning money from pulling your teeth and the only way to deny him that is to pull your own teeth out with a door and some string.

Straight up before anyone starts jumping up and down saying “But it’s a woman’s choice”, you have to realise this important thing. Just because you have a stomach doesn’t mean you can make medical decisions about a stomach ulcer. Just because you have a uterus doesn’t make your opinions on childbirth valid. You can have some frankly insane opinions. Home Birth without the support of trained medical professionals (Even Nurse Practitioners operate under the umbrella of a Obstetrician, Paediatrician and an Anaesthesiologist so if things go wrong they can save the baby.) is dangerous. And it shows. You are between three to four times more likely to lose a child in birth with a home delivery.

A lot of people I know defend them. A famous natural birther midwife was Mayer Eisenstein. A lot of antivax love him. The average malpractice suits faced by an Obs/Gynae over their lifetime in the USA is between 2 to 3. Obs/Gynae has a high rate of malpractice suits due to the nature of the event. A lot of it is on the fly and sometimes the child is hurt during the birth. Mayer had 15. Including two cases that I know of where the direct responsibility for mortality and morbidity was his actions. He refused to test for Rh incompatibility which resulted in one dead baby and another suffering from cerebral palsy and mental retardation. This man is treated as a hero. Other midwives proudly tell of “difficult” deliveries they have managed which often ended in the deaths of the child. Mothers who lost kids treat it as an experience akin to fighting a war rather than a serious error in judgement that cost the life of their child.

A lot of people straight up don’t believe me when I say this. I have been accused of misogyny for actually pointing out how mad this is as a practice because I impinge on a woman’s sovereign right to make decisions regarding her genitals. I have even been accused of “rape” because I don’t think these midwives should be allowed to carry on their quackery. It’s a lovely group for classy arguments. But I know you won’t believe me. This is a skeptical place, skeptics demand proof. You want to see the bullshit for yourselves.

Footling Breech Birth has a 10 to 15% mortality rate if done vaginally. Here are people actively defending breech delivery by vagina, mentioning that there are midwives who do it (and therefore encourage it) and actively telling people that they can do it too. In addition breech has a high rate of complication resulting in permanent sequelae for the child.

I can go into the umpteen moronic things these women believe, but I think “Breech Birth is perfectly Safe” is enough for now. Not just breech birth, breech birth done by a bunch of quack midwives with little to no medical equipment at home…

Ancient Spirits of Evil… Transform me

Into Avicenna!!! THE EVER LIVING!!!

Okay! I got that bit out of my system. Today’s silliness comes from an anonymous reader who posted a little quiz courtesy of some crazy christian preacher called Bob Larsen. Googling his stuff doesn’t show the list. Apparently it’s behind some sort of pay wall and someone has quite nicely paid so that we can all benefit from this knowledge. So I figured I should take the test. Just to find out if I am more asura than deva.

Do you have a demon? Take this short quiz to find out if you are at risk.

Better do what he says. Apparently Larsen has degrees in Monsteronomy and Demonology.

By the Power of Greyskull that image alone hurts to look at. Maybe I do have a demon.

1) Do you sometimes exhibit uncontrollable outbursts of anger or violence?

No. My anger and violence is highly controlled. I plan my inhuman rampages to match a metal soundtrack and carefully choreograph them for maximum theatrical effect.

2) Have you experimented with two or more forms of the occult?

Yes. But I was unable to create the necessary synergy needed. Plus I am from Manchester… Where the hell am I going to find a virgin everytime I need to do anything occult? And have you seen the price of wibbly wobbly daggers? Don’t get me started on getting cultists to do anything apart from wear terrible shoes and drink poisoned tang. And these days you have to be careful! I once spent nearly 400 pounds on ancient texts invoking a blood soaked future where demons roamed and everything was covered in skulls. Where humanity was as bad as the monsters it sought to fought, callously discarding lives to further the xenophobic goals of a corpse while all around aliens of varying shapes and forms fought against eldritch beings and biological terrors of your worst nightmares. I even had the tiny plastic figures to go with all that! And let me tell you, the only thing all of that managed to do was make girlfriends vanish from my life with astonishing quickness.

3) Have you been sexually violated (raped, incested, molested)?

Incested is not a word. But clearly this is a demonology session rather than remedial english.

Can’t make a joke about this and it’s a bit too early in the blog game to be telling people about myself.

4) Do you sometimes manifest behavior not consistent with your normal personality?

Yes, I do. I often have these uncontrolled blackouts and wake up 3 or 4 hours later surrounded by destruction of property. It’s irritating when I am at home, but positively embarassing when I am at the clinic. I was giving a patient a prostate exam last month when it happened and now he won’t come back to the clinic.

5) Do you abuse alcohol or drugs to escape painful past experiences in life?

No. But I would like to. I hear it’s amazing!

6) Do you commit immoral or illegal acts, contrary to your customary values?

No. Immoral and Illegal acts are completely within my customary values.

7) Have you ever attempted or contemplated suicide?

Judging by the stupidity of this questionnaire the answer may be a yes.

8) Are you sometimes overwhelmed with feelings of severe depression and hopelessness?

Yes, but only if I talk to people who think demons exist.

9) Do you indulge in self-abusive behavior such as anorexia, bulimia, cutting or self-mutilation?

No. I just start up a game of the sims, make a character that looks like me then abuse it till it pees itself, starves and “accidentally” sets himself on fire.

10) Have you experienced life-changing trauma from which you haven’t recovered?

Yes. Let’s just say it caused an unnatural fear of balloons…

11) Do you know of ancestors who committed murder, suicide, or sexual perversion?

Often all three at the same time!

12) Do voices tell you to commit illegal acts, blaspheme God, or indulge in immoral acts?

Yes. But mine is called PZ Myers and its less a voice and more a sort of text based blasphemy deal. Also a lot of squids… I don’t know what that’s about.

13) Have you asked Satan to take your life in exchange for something?

Fame and the ability to play Rock and Roll. The standard life exchange policy as it were.

14) Do you live a fear-based life resulting in paranoia or multiple phobias?

No. I live a life based on the acquisition of money so I can buy things I want because as of now I am really poor and everyone keeps telling me that money is evil. I want to get some to see what the fuss is all about.

15) Have you experienced emotional or physical abuse from your biological parents?

What sort of question is that? Of course! They are parents. That’s practically their job. I for one am looking forward to dressing up as a werewolf with my (hypothetical) wife to scare my kids (Also hypothetical) at some point.

16) Have you been emotionally or physically abandoned by either biological parent?

I once got accidentally left at a supermarket. Does that count?

17) Have you felt repeated, disabling episodes of rejection or depression?

Objection! Repeating the question! It’s just 21 questions! How can you repeat them?

18) Have you failed repeatedly in significant relationships?

No. I never fail in my relationships. It’s just that the other people in them are so very human and cannot match my superior build quality. Thus they break away and fall to the wayside like a hubcap from a wheel… Or a wounded squirrel.

19) Have you failed to experience trust and lasting love from a significant other?

Yes. Wait. Are you saying that all relationship troubles are caused by Satan? That makes sense. It figures that it would take an unholy being of pure evil to create shows such as Jerry Springer and Maury Povich so as to profit from that!

20) Do you consistently experience serious health or financial issues?

Clearly demons cause poor people to be poor and sick. Which is why prayer has a 100% success rate in treating lepers and poverty! Which is why Africa has no lepers and everyone is super rich!

21) Are you significantly hindered in prayer, worship, Bible reading and church attendance?

Yes. I think the problem is that there is this text which doesn’t make any sense that expects you to believe in some malarky about super incest and a talking snake and some bizzare rules about not eating owls and then it goes on about some carpenter dude. Quite frankly it’s a big hinderance to the whole deal.

I just realised something.

INTERNET GAME TIME! 21 questions! Answer them like a famous character and the rest of us will try guessing who it is!

Trigger Warning – Content that follows the jump contains a discussion of Rape and indeed Todd Akin’s comments…

I don’t think I need to repeat what everyone else thinks about Todd Akin’s “Legitimate Rape” comment, but needless to say it’s quite possibly one of the most idiotic things said by someone in a position of authority this year.

Needless to say that this has attracted a lot of flak, not just for the sheer callousness of such a statement but because it is a trigger to the countless people who have been raped and demonstrates the kind of thinking many rape victims have to face from people who literally have no idea about rape.

Now, most of us men aren’t subject to sexual assault. Many women however have. So we don’t know what women feel towards the event. Many people are forever traumatised by it and any statement such as the one made by Akins causes a negative reaction. And here is the thing why we write “trigger warning” and the like on posts. Because it warns those who suffered about the content within a post and that they are continuing knowing what the contents are.

The reaction of people who were raped to a trigger is perfectly legitimate because the people traumatised by the event can respond to a trigger by different and unique methods. You cannot tell a combat PTSD sufferer that his fear of balloons is idiotic and then pop balloons at him. Likewise you cannot tell a rape survivor (and PTSD sufferer) that their reaction (no matter how ludicrous it seems to you) is incorrect. Because you don’t see what the person sees.

Unfortunately Mark Goldbatt from Patheos doesn’t seem to grasp that when he tries to explain why the Eve Ensler’s statement – “as if to imply there was such a thing as ‘illegitimate’ rape. Let me try to explain to you what that does to the minds, hearts and souls of the millions of women on this planet who experience rape. It is a form of re-rape.” is wrong. He calls it a “Pathetic” letter. Again I must point out that Mark indulges in some pretty vile moves so Trigger Warnings galore…

This is the first I’ve heard about “re-rape.” Maybe it’s an elusive concept, and maybe only rape survivors like yourself can grasp it; I know I’ve mulled it over for several days, but I still can’t fathom how a two-bit politician putting his foot in his mouth is the psychic equivalent of your own description of the original act: “I want you to close your eyes and imagine that you are on your bed or up against a wall or locked in a small suffocating space. Imagine being tied up there and imagine some aggressive, indifferent, insane stranger friend or relative ripping off your clothes and entering your body—the most personal, sacred, private part of your body—and violently, hatefully forcing themselves into you so that you are ripped apart. Then imagine that stranger’s sperm shooting into you and filling you and you can’t get it out.”

Well, I think I grasp the idea since Eve explains it in her article. That at its core the Akins comment makes women feel like the only way that their rape is legitimised is at the behest of a man who arbitrarily determines what isn’t and is rape. That there is a concept where rape is acceptable or a part of reality (How many women are told that they were raped because of the clothes they wear or because of alcohol?).

It’s not “putting his foot in his mouth”, it’s a serious error of character where a man with no grasp of human biology and psychology has deemed it fit to make a statement about those two issues and this is a man in power who has routinely made it a sticking point to argue about women’s health rights and champion a reduction in the rights of women to access basic gynaecological healthcare.

So I’m sitting here weighing those two things—a congressman saying something stupid versus a crazed attacker violently penetrating my body—and for some reason I can’t get the scales to balance. Still, I know there must be something to what you’re saying because, well, you’re Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, and because I’ve read enough feminist theory to know that men don’t “get” certain things . . . even though, of course, believing that women don’t “get” certain things is grounds for a lawsuit.

It’s not stupid. It’s a cruel and callous statement made thoughtlessly by a man who genuinely believed that women’s uteruses are magic. This is a man who has fought relentlessly to prevent access to abortions and whose argument in context was made to exclude women who were raped from having abortions by claiming that the women who got pregnant from rape “weren’t really raped”.

Still, I have to tell you, Eve—do you mind if I call you Eve? I don’t want to misspeak and inflict still more horrific violence upon you—there’s something, well, disproportionate about your response to Akin’s buffoonery, something that goes beyond a standard election-season gotcha, beyond even your attempt to tar Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan with Akin’s remarks on the grounds that the two of them were among 227 co-sponsors of a May 2011 bill called “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.” That bill included the phrase “forcible rape”—which the FBI has been using for decades, and which Akin now says he meant rather than “legitimate rape”—in order to distinguish rape involving physical violence, or the threat of physical violence, from rape in which the victim may express outward consent—such as cases of statutory rape when, for example, a 19-year-old boy has sex with his 17-year-old girlfriend.

It then takes on this really creepy tone where he tries to treat Eve not as someone who has made an argument but as someone who literally is so fragile and thin skinned about rape that she brooks no discussion whatsoever.

And the legitimate rape isn’t as much as a faux pas as many people think. What the problem is its combination with the notion that in cases of “legitimate rape” the woman can shut down a pregnancy (possibly though magic). That’s what was crazy, because he was flogging the notion that women who were raped and have children due to that were pregnant because they on a small level were to blame. That they are LIARS. That’s why they are pregnant. You can explain “Legitimate vs. Forcible” and try and weasel your way out of that but the female body doesn’t have any way to shut down forcible rape any more than it has the ability to fly.

Statutory rape is an entirely different beast and there is date rape or rape through the use of coercion where consent may be given out of a lack of choice.

The bill’s sponsors say they were attempting to address a loophole in the Hyde Amendment that bans the use of federal tax dollars to pay for abortions. Under current law, Medicaid funds can cover abortion costs when the pregnancy is the result of a rape or incest. By including the phrase “forcible rape,” the sponsors wanted to prevent the use of Medicaid to pay for abortions for minors whose outwardly consensual sex nonetheless met the legal definition of statutory rape.

Oh! That make
s it completely acceptable! #Sarcasm

It just means that the people involved were planning to throw rape victims under a bus if they weren’t threatened or if they were under age. Minors cannot give consent, which is the entire fucking point of statutory rape; you cannot say that statutory rape is not technically rape.

Other outwardly consensual sex? Date Rape, Consensual Sex That Goes out of Control, Coercion and Altered State of Mind Rape. Those aren’t “legitimate rape” right?

Whatever you think of the wisdom of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” its intent was clearly to strengthen the Hyde Amendment. . . . Oh, I’m sorry; you don’t think so, Eve? You read it as something more sinister, something akin (no pun intended) to the way “rapists played with us in the act of being raped—intimidating us, threatening us, muting us. Your playing with words like ‘forcible’ and ‘legitimate’ is playing with our souls which have been shattered by unwanted penises shoving into us, ripping our flesh, our vaginas, our consciousness, our confidence, our pride, our futures.”

Yes it is. The Hyde Amendment is a shocking piece of legislation akin to saying “Fuck Women’s Health”. It was put into power by a bunch of men who think a block of cells is the same as a human being. It’s a pointless piece of legislation designed to harm women’s health while claiming to be moral. Even if we ignore that for the most part it reduces the reproductive choice of women while placing monetary penalties on one gender primarily for the act of sex, it also forces raped women to pay for abortions (or rely on charity or state level programs which may or may not be available) which is a dick move. Yes, you may not agree with giving women money to have abortions. But if you think women ENJOY having abortions then you probably think that people enjoy having their teeth pulled.

(As an aside, Eve, I notice that you keep referring to women’s “souls,” which you specifically differentiate from their minds and hearts. If a woman’s “soul” is distinct from her mind and heart, what does it consist of? Where does it come from? Oh, and when does it arrive? You see where this is going, don’t you?)

She is using the romantic version of a soul. The idea of a combined personality that makes Eve who she is that explains her state of mind and personality. It’s a poetic construct, when she uses it. It means that rape damages who she is. And that it has changed her for the worse. And it’s high lunacy for an Evangelical Christian to doubt this statement considering Mark Goldbatt believes in an actual physical soul that can be affected by his deity of choice and that will be rewarded with stuff if he believes in Jesus and doesn’t believe in science, gays and women’s health. To mock someone else’s idea of a soul is hypocrisy.

Likewise, you hear a more sinister subtext in Akin’s mindboggling suggestion that women rarely become pregnant as a result of rape because, as he explained, “if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Generations of female slaves and their biracial children might beg to differ, of course. But I keep hearing that as mere biological ignorance. You, on the other hand, noticed something else in Akin’s words: “It would seem you were saying that getting pregnant after a rape would indicate it was not a ‘legitimate’ rape.”

The biological ignorance means that Akin should not be allowed to make any decisions with regards to women’s healthcare at all. It’s not biological ignorance so much as a massive failing of the education system. It can happen in third world nations, but this is fucking America. If you are willing to elect men who are clearly morons to power then your country is going to be run by morons. This is basic goddamn high school biology indicating that Todd Akin requires basic biology and sex education of the proper kind. Generations of Female Slaves? That’s where you are getting your answer from? Not the wide variety of women who have become pregnant from rape?

No, Eve heard right, that’s what it implies. That a man who was setting out to reduce the rights of women to access healthcare and believed that they shouldn’t receive that healthcare because their vaginas and uteruses functioned through magic. That this was a man who legitimised rape if you got pregnant. It is a horrific thing to hear from a man who is planning to run for office.

That can’t be strictly what he meant since he said cases of conception from rape are “really rare” (not “nonexistent”) because the female body will “try to” (not “always”) shut down the fertilization process. But isn’t there another, more (how shall I say this?) charitable way to look at it? Isn’t it at least possible that Akin, like many pro-life advocates, struggles with the consistency of his beliefs in the agonizing case of pregnancies resulting from rape and incest? That he struggles so much he’ll grasp at any explanatory straw, trust any nugget of pseudo-science, telling him that such cases are exceedingly rare, that women’s bodies somehow mystically repel evil sperm.

Because rapists only hit menstruating women? Conception from rape is not common in the west due to access to condoms (many rapists have used them) and because women have access to the morning after pill and the like which they do use post rape.

However if one pays ANY attention to Africa or any other place where rape is widespread or used as a weapon then one notices an inordinate amount of children born to women who are raped. If he is a pro-lifer then he has demonstrated a completely idiotic grasp of women’s reproductive health and should not have any say in the healthcare of women because he is a fucking moron. He is demonstrating pro-life idiocy and actively spoke out loud things that are being told to young children across America in lieu of proper sex education. This attitude is not one that’s new, but it is not one you wish to hear from someone at that high a level of government.

As I’m sure you’re aware, Eve, the most intellectually consistent pro-life position doesn’t allow exceptions for rape or incest . . . and forcing pro-life advocates to admit this fact is always a good way to score political points. But must we seize every opportunity to score political points? Aren’t we all emotional, as well as intellectual, creatures? Don’t we all struggle with hard cases? Don’t we all occasionally grasp at straws hoping the hard cases will just go away?

Really? This is like shouting “Barrack Obama is a Nigger” then trying to claim that the ensuing labelling of yourself as a racist is an attempt to score political points. The mildest complaint about Todd Akin that I can think of is that he doesn’t have an internal filter that stops him from saying idiotic things. And that’s the MILDEST.

This isn’t a hard case. This isn’t even a case at all. This is like banning hysterectomies for women with cervical cancer because it will ruin their reproductive organs. It’s a medical procedure to prevent an event that may ruin a woman’s life.

Grasping at straws? It’s not grasping at straws, at its best its a testament to the idiocy of pro-choice and its worse its an attempt to legitimise the notion that pregnancy through rape means a woman wasn’t really raped.

Is it really necessary for me to point out that pro-choice advocates face their own problem of consistency in the case of partial birth abortions? To point out that the most intellectually consistent pro-choice position permits the killing of b
abies—not just miniscule embryos, not just tadpole-like fetuses, but hand-squeezing, eye-blinking, air-sucking babies? Isn’t the most consistent pro-choice position that sentient, medically viable babies can, at the request of the mother, be killed until the moment of their delivery, and arguably until the cutting of their umbilical cords? Don’t pro-choice advocates agonize over consistency, and occasionally grasp at straws, when it comes to the hard case of partial birth abortions?

Partial birth abortion is an abortion of last resort usually done to prevent the birth of congenitally defective children or terminate a pregnancy that has exceeded statutes on women who are not going to be benefitted from the pregnancy. It’s a horrific procedure for everyone involved and necessary for women who have to deal with either the birth of a child that is going to be horrifically damaged and in pain or if the pregnancy actively threatens the life of the mother. And it’s a choice. No one is FORCING you to have a late term abortion. And yes many of the partial birth abortions are products of incest and rape where traumatised women are afraid to come forward because of arseholes like Todd Akin requiring a late term abortion at least for the woman’s sanity.

95% of all abortions take place in the first 12 weeks of conception. The remainder after 20 to 24 weeks (20 weeks is the well baby ultrasound visit that can detect congenital anomalies). The few that occur after 24 weeks are rare. Like less than 1% rare. Mark Goldblatt doesn’t grasp what choice means. At the request of the mother? It’s not done at the request of the mother. It’s done under medical circumstances. The rules with regards to late term therapeutic abortion generally require a doctor’s recommendation. A healthy mother with a child will be encouraged to tough it out for 8 more weeks and deliver at term and most such Obs/Gynae who do the procedure do not do it on women who just “want one”. And most women don’t want one, they want the option being there should the need to use it arise. No one WANTS to terminate a late term foetus, they HAVE to.

A choice means that you can decide. It’s simple, there are two ice creams. Vanilla and Chocolate. You can pick which you want. No one is forcing you to abort your baby; it’s just a choice that is available. You can risk your own life and carry to term. Yes you can walk around feeling smug and superior that you survived a risky pregnancy without terminating your child. You can even attribute it to your imaginary friend of choice and feel superior to all the women who didn’t make your choice.

But what you cannot do is take that choice away from women.

What I’m asking, Eve, is whether the debate over abortion—which is how we got here, remember?—must always be fought over the most agonizing cases. Must it always be couched in overwrought rhetoric and larded with purple prose? Must it always be “the Republican war on women” versus “the Democratic war on the unborn”? Must the sides forever see one another as “those people who want to force rape victims to bear their rapist’s child” and “these people who want to permit the killing of living, feeling babies”?

No it need not. It can be fought with economic and common sense reasons. However the problem is there is no common sense option from pro-life. It’s a movement entrenched in fantasy and ignorance. There is literally no sane argument for a movement that thinks that pro-choice means compulsory abortion.

Don’t we all just need to take a deep breath now and then and let nonsense speak for itself?

By which you mean that we shouldn’t criticise idiots.

This is high hypocrisy! Mark Goldblatt clearly thinks that Eve Ensler’s article is nonsense. Shouldn’t he follow his own advice?

Here is some advice, don’t defend Todd Akin. Don’t tell rape victims that they are being stupid for “feeling angry or hurt or uncomfortable around people who make such a remark”. Don’t reduce the choice of women to access healthcare.

Above all. Engage your brain and think about your actions not in terms of whether a 2000 year old book written by bronze age shepherds and compiled by a Roman Emperor agrees with you; but how your actions affect other people. Otherwise you end up trying to defend a terrible viewpoint based on the notion that it’s what a bunch of people who didn’t know how a woman’s reproductive system function would have wanted.

Oh no! They have found our darkest secrets, move forward to phase II my minions! They have forced me to reveal my hand early. But no matter they will fall before me like myotonic goats before a firework display!

On a more serious note? This is pretty much par for the course for Natural News but it shows a deep seated streak of anti-science born out of being luddites. For those who are unaware? Luddites were a social movement of English weavers who banded together to destroy and damage the scientific progress that threatened their careers as weavers. The machine in question was the mechanical loom which could do in minutes what took them days. Without which we wouldn’t have things that we take for granted.

Like wardrobes and multiple changes of clothes. The simple act of me getting home, taking a shower and washing my clothes and buying new boxers once a year would be unthinkable in the period of the luddites. Because they were made redundant by technology and their skills became pointless. Technology gets redundant all the time. From the humble telephone to even something as technologically impressive as the Concord. I agree with Clarkson on this. Concord became obsolete because it was too slow in a world with cheap internet.

Natural News speaks to this primal fear of obsolescence. To the average person science is a vast entity that has exceeded the ability of a common man to understand it. It’s easy to understand “I discovered a new plant/chemical/equation”. It’s hard to draw the line between science fiction and reality when we talk about transhumanism, genetic modification, fundamental particles and nanoparticles. People hear that and think of all the science fiction movies they have seen where humanity is destroyed by our own hubris.

The most important thing to remember about science fiction is that at it’s core it is FICTION. When you forget that, you get Mike Adams. Also when you cannot tell the difference between fiction and reality you are considered delusional and this article is delusion to the max.

Pictured… Extinction
No. We aren’t destroying the human race. Only a moron would think that. There are 7 BILLION people on the planet. In fact, the problem is that there are so many many humans that we are actually having shortages which will eventually affect us all detrimentally. Modern wealth is due to discrepancy in resource allocation, if we spread it out we will quickly realise that we don’t have enough to give everyone. What we need is a REDUCTION of our population because humans are extremely stable as a population. We live long, have low infant mortalities. In western multicultural societies we are increasing our genetic diversity in a big big way. We are extremely resistant to extinction because we as a species do not need to evolve to survive big changes as we are capable of simply thinking problems through. In short? We are extremely fucking tough. We don’t need claws because we can build guns. We don’t need thick skin because we can build tanks. We don’t need to look scary because we can make fire. We don’t need speed or flight because we are the fastest things on the bloody planet. Our technology has made us incredible.

Humanity is made up of cyborgs in the crudest sense of the word. We are so intrinsically linked to our technology that we as humans cannot be considered without it. Without science we are nothing. And the inability to get this is the driving force behind Mike Adams latest pile of fail. There are 7 billion of us and we aren’t going away anytime soon. It’s just that Mike Adams hates science and he really doesn’t care about honesty. His so called “Honest Look” states

In fact, if you take an honest look at what threatens our civilization and our planet today,it’s always something done in the name of science!

In the name of the moon I will punish you!

Do not judge…

Now that I have gotten my obligatory nerdy reference out of the way, Mike Adams is so fucking clueless that he assumes that without science everything was all beer, burgers and blowjobs. Never mind that prior to electricity, most of us had to use incredibly unclean and dangerous open flames or gas flames in our houses. Never mind that prior to medical science, the most dangerous thing a woman could do was give birth to children and that surviving to the age of 15 was considered an achievement in itself. That prior to the green revolution starvation was so common across the globe that no one gave a damn.

The fact remains that on this planet roughly a billion lives exist due to the work of people like Norman Borlaug. So let’s deconstruct some of his gripes before he gets to the “10 Most Deadly Things in Science”. .

• Toxic pesticides that kill the soils and rivers? “Science!”

That help feed a billion people without which, roughly 1 out of 7 people on this planet will not exist. And that’s actually assuming we fed ourselves to this standard. What would really happen is we in the west would still have food while the poor of the world in Asia and Africa would not and would simply “Starve to Death”.

• Toxic chemical medications that kill humans and pollute downstream waters? “Scientific!”

The infant mortality rate in Nigeria and other parts of Africa is around 120 per 1000. In the west it is around FOUR. That’s thirty times lower. Why? Because of “Toxic Medications”. Because Mike Adams couldn’t understand medicine if we threatened to beat him senseless with Kumar and Clark. Because he is a Health Ranger, not a Doctor. One of these things is a real thing, the other is a made up title. Basically, since medicine sometimes causes adverse reactions we should simply die of diseases.

• The mass poisoning of the population with a toxic combination of industrial waste prod
ucts called “fluoride?” It’s all done for “science!”

Fluoride in water is the single most cost effective dental treatment in the world. It is responsible for the reduction of cavities in every single western population. Maybe Mike Adams is sponsored by Big Dentistry.

• Nuclear bombs that have already decimated civilian populations? “Science!”

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were tragedies. They were a demonstration of a brutal show of force designed to demoralise and crush an enemy that was prepared to sell itself dearly for no reason. Mike Adams is a fucking moron because he has not read history.

Japan fought tooth and nail across Asia and the Pacific Islands. Each being won in bloody contest that sent thousands of young men on both sides to their deaths. The japanese occupied lands suffered from the most horrific enslavement ever. The Japanese were WORSE than the Nazis. They killed more people in more horrific and inventive ways than the Nazis did. They destroyed societies. They raped and pillaged and slaughtered. And the worst of all? They excused their actions by their code of honour. And their code of honour caused them to fight to the death on the Islands and Asia because of their faith in the living god of the emperor.

The only option was for Japan was defeat. We had two choices. We either invaded the mainland of Japan and fought a war where every single man, woman and child was prepared to fight and die in the name of the emperor or we dropped the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb saved more lives than it killed. It saved tens of thousands of soldiers who would have had to fight in Japan. It saved Japan from a war that would have further brutalised it’s population. The estimated casualties for an invasion of Japan were in the million man mark for the allies with estimated deaths of japanese reaching close to 10 million.

All those lives were saved by the Destroyer of Worlds and his bomb.

Mammograms and other medical imaging devices that actually cause cancer? “Scientific!”

Mammograms detect cancer. They don’t cause it. If you don’t detect cancer it still will kill you. It’s just that a routine yearly scan mixed in with self palpation can detect a lot of breast cancer and saves a lot of lives. It can cause cancer but for the most part it is detective in nature. There is a massive improvement in treatment and care for breast cancer with nearly 70 to 80% of women SURVIVING breast cancer.

Other “Medical Imaging Devices” that can cause cancer are X-Rays and CT Scans. I don’t know about Mike, but we actually don’t expose people to that many X-Rays/CT Scans.

Chemotherapy poisons, “preventive” mastectomies, cancer radiation treatments? It’s all “scientific” of course.

Yes. Go back and see that magic 80% of women surviving breast cancer. For every woman who dies there are FOUR who live. Because of poison, mutilation and radiation. The problem with Mike is he wants a cancer cure that is like the treatment for worm infestation. Just one tablet and POOF no more cancer! In Mike’s world there would be no real treatment for cancer and people would just “Die” and he would simply claim they didn’t take his vitamins regularly or something equally inane and tragically dickish.

The mass mercury poisoning of children through dental amalgams? They call it “science-based dentistry!”

1980s called. They want their pseudoscience back. Dental amalgams haven’t poisoned children.

Real science is the quest for understanding, not the quest for profit

Which is why Mike Adams has a shop linked to his blog where they flog supplements you don’t need for rather large amounts of money.

And knowledge without the ability to apply it is pointless. If we never applied any of our understanding we would have no human civilisation. Mike Adams thinks we should all be amateur scientists. Why?

Because in his world his abject lack of qualifications is killer. In a world where anyone can be called a scientist the Health Ranger is a real qualification.

Let’s see what Mike is so scared about with his 10 things that can kill the entire human civilisation off. If you believe in science fiction and fear mongering.

#1) Nuclear power (Fukushima in particular)

Coal kills way more people every year than nuclear power. If we totalled the total deaths to each (yes even if we include The Bomb) then more people have died due to coal than nuclear power. Same for Oil. Fukushima as a crisis has stopped and it only produced a tenth of the radiation of Chernobyl. No one died in Fukushima… By contrast? The Cosmo Oil Company in Chiba Prefecture was also hit and caused the deaths of 6 people. By Adams logic we should stop using petrol.

And what does Mike Adams suggest we use? Dams? Related to Geography. Wind? Related to Geography, require vast lands, not suitable for use everywhere, unreliable, expensive. Solar? Same. If only we could generate electricity from bullshit and hot air then we could be free from fossil fuels just based on Mike Adams.

That doesn’t me we cannot try to use them as much as possible but it doesn’t mean nuclear power is going to go away anytime soon.

#2) GMOs (self-replicating genetic pollution)

Food as a weapon though GMOs? The biggest cause of starvation and farmer suicides in the world is…

Western Civilisation. You see, we are really REALLY good at making food. We suffered for it too. We decimated the countryside population and forced people into cities. Roughly 5% of our population feeds the remainder. In developing nations? Roughly 70% does that. Now here is the problem.

We are so good at what we do that we can produce food for so cheap that in the international market, we DROP the price of food. Particularly when you calculate food subsidies we in the west use to ensure that we have a strategic reserve of food. Now our choices are “Give up a strategic reserve of food” (Yeah! Because that is a GREAT plan) or “Give food for free to third world nations” (Great Plan! What do those 70% of people do instead now that you have destroyed their livelihood?) or “Produce a sustainable change where we industrialis
e third world nations” (Great plan, only thing is we don’t have the resources.). The answer is not easy because no one wants to admit that the problem is that Developing and Least Developed Nations cannot maintain such a skewed demography and no one wants to tell them the brutal truth of that. That millions of people who have been farming for generations are going to have to stop.

It’s not Monsanto. It’s us. And it’s not something WE can change, but it is something we can help others in the world change to.

Also every type 1 diabetic on Insulin owes their life to a GMO. Mike Adams would rather treat you with herbs and wishful thinking rather than actual medicine. No. GMOs are fine, it’s just that Mike Adams doesn’t know what they are. Less Jurassic Park and more Bacteria that makes insulin.

#3) Nanotechnology (self-replicating microscopic machines)

No. Nanotechnology is anything that’s molecular level of size and small. Not all nanotechnology is “machine based”. And he is flogging the grey goo scenario as a possible way the world could end. By his logic the world could end through a homeopath producing Water 9 therefore we should ban homeopathy.

#4) Bioweapons (self-replicating microscopic weapons)

No one in modern history has ever used a bioweapon. No one is stupid enough to use a weapon that affects you just as easily as it affects your opponent. And no one is stupid enough to use a weapon which can be stopped through something as simple as medicine. Nice try Mike but Zombie Apocalypse/Disease Scenarios are just stupid in a world where we understand Germ Theory.

I think this fear is most damning. Because it shows that Mike definitely does not understand how pathogens function.

#5) Atmospheric experiments (HAARP and high-altitude spraying)

Cool Acronym. Sinister right… like the active form of HAARP should be HAARM. HAARP stands for High Altitude Auroral Research Program. It analyses the Ionosphere doing experiments which may help in improving communication.

I blame The Core. I think Mike Adams (again) forgets the difference between reality and science fiction. Poking the Ionosphere will not change the magnetic poles of the earth because that is generated by the spinning of the molten core fo the earth in a solid crust that has a lot of iron. The magnetic poles flip due to the orientation of the core. Flipping the magnetic poles may affect some electronics but it really does bugger all to us since we do not function by magnetism.

And chemtrails? Really?

#6) Artificial Intelligence (AI, when coupled with killer drone hardware)

The Combat Drone? The combat drone is a low cost platform for a camera that provides some level of anti-tank support in the field. It’s PRIMARY use is intelligence gathering and battlefield awareness.

Knowing where your enemies are and conveying that information to soldiers on the ground is more important than mindlessly unleashing missiles and bullets. Wars are won on information systems. Without information your giant war machine is just a series of parts to be destroyed piece meal. And the unmanned drone is currently the acme of real time combat information gathering.

It incidentally fires hellfire missiles. It’s no different from driving a helicopter out there but at a much lower cost and with lower risk to the combatants since the drone is very small while the helicopter is very big. I don’t see Mike Adams claiming that rotory winged aircraft are going to spell our doom despite the fact that the helicopter is basically the combat drone’s more badass and heavily armed brother.

All drones have human operators and there is no plan to make the drone fire with no human input due to the fact that computers are notoriously incapable of thinking on their feet which is a disadvantage in a combat situation where human judgement is required.

#7) Particle accelerator physics experiments (Large Hadron Collider)

The people at the LHC are trying to find out new things and discover how the world functions. Mike Adams sees it as dangerous because Mike thrives on idiocy and every thing science does is roll back the veil of plausible idiocy where Mike and his ilk can hide. We aren’t playing god so much as throwing back the curtain. And indeed what’s behind the curtain is a sad human being pretending to be something he isn’t. Well that’s what Adams sees. We don’t CARE, we see far more useful and impressive things that come about from this experiment.

The LHC is trying to produce the fundemental  particles that compose matter. To see how small we can get. To prove what we are made out of. Mike believes in the nonsensical argument that we could generate a massive point mass and somehow create a blackhole from a collision.

#8) Pollinator disruption chemicals (synthetic pesticides that destroy honey bee colonies)

Unlike those natural pesticides that don’t kill bees? We actually don’t spray around bees. The issue with bees seems to be parasitical and most pesticides are specifically used in ways to be less deadly to bees. The pesticide in question is Imidacloprid which causes a drop in resistance to a fungal pathogen. It’s actually banned in Europe but the major causative effect IS the fungus.

#9) Nuclear weapons

Unlikely to be used due to MAD. No one is stupid enough to use one. Also the Cold War wants it’s fears back.

#10) Weaponized vaccines (live cross-species viral material being injected into human targets)

You know? Guns are cheaper and more effective. Also I can kill people who are a few feet away from me. I mean this is just Industrial Grade Bollocks. Vaccines create immunity and prevent disease. We know this. Mike is just lying at this point in order to flog Vitamin D supplements which are a lot more expensive than vaccines. And I don’t think Mike Adams understands how condoms and contraceptive pills works if he thinks you need to inject it via vaccines. Mike labours under the assumption that well vaccinated societies have low birth rates not due to the liberation of women and feminist ideology, the availability of birth control and emphasis on quality of life rather than quantity for our children. He attributes the low birth rate to “Vaccines” because immune reactions cause your sperm and eggs to stop functioning in the world
of Mike Adams.

The “science” practiced today is a science of domination and control. It is almost never carried out for humanitarian purposes to benefit humankind.

Except for that Green Revolution which singlehandedly feeds a billion people. And that smallpox extermination. And the polio extermination. And the usage of Retrovirals in Africa. And that Internet. Not to mention seatbelts, car efficiency and alternate energy sources….

As a result of such trends, “science” has come to mean corruption, dishonesty, greed and death. “Scientists” — the people who practice such science — aredeath engineerswhose innovations may deliver hyped-up short-term benefits, but they often ultimately lead to long-term death and destruction. Roundup herbicide, for example, kills crop soils and encourages the development of pesticide-resistant “superweeds.” In the terrain of human biology, much the same ramification of death and destruction is happening with the widespread abuse of antibiotics and the alarming rise of MRSA and other “superbugs.”

I am a Death Engineer. If Mike Adams is the Health Ranger then I am the Goddamn Death Engineer.

For all you know this is what I look like while I am engineering.

If we erred on the side of caution we would never have done ANYTHING. And we understand caution far more than Mike Adams. Mainly because we actually understand risks while Mike Adams will not do anything unless 100% sure. Therefore Mike Adams probably doesn’t wear a seatbelt because in  car crash there is a small chance that the seatbelt may kill you and because it doesn’t stop 100% of fatalities.
There is a chance if you play with fire you will burn yourself. There is a chance you will hurt yourself with a pointed stick. If we thought like Mike Adams we would have never gotten to where we are with our technology.
In the name of science, humanity has developed remarkable technologies. But as a species, humankind operates as infants in terms of wisdom and maturity. We are worse than children with flamethrowers –we are children with nukes!
The difference between me and Mike is this. Mike fears everything. We didn’t know that we would unleash MRSA when we started using antibiotics. If we did, we would have used antibiotics in cocktails that would have prevented the formation of MRSA. Mike? Mike would have let the countless people across the globe who owe their lives to antibiotics die. Why?

Because Mike Is a Dick. What do you call a person who lives in a technological wonderland who actively seeks to claim that people living in third world conditions live in some sort of fucking utopia and that we should live like them. What do you call someone who actively seeks to undermine people who are trying to improve the conditions that these people live in? You call them dicks.

He denigrates scientists as nerds because he has watched the Big Bang theory and assumes we are all borderline autistic (Due to all those vaccines) and are incapable of behaving like anything but a stereotype. To him the “Biology Nerd” who rappels down cliffs for samples is unknown. To him a “Chemistry Nerd” who goes clubbing is unknown. To him “Physics Nerds” at a pub for a football match are an unknown. Why?

Because he cannot tell the difference between reality and fiction. In fiction any scientist is a nerd possibly with glasses who is either weak physically or a sociopath. However the joke is on him. Reality does not have a Mike Adams bias.

But I digress! Where was I. Oh yes…

Va-ccin-ate! Va-ccin-ate!

Uniquely and Singularly Dangerous

Oh bombs! They are so entertaining!
Can’t you see how happy he is!
Ah, Animal liberation nutters are at it again, with Camille really crossing the line from vapid lunatic to dangerous vapid lunatic again. Not only offering such lovely educational material as this device to make a firebomb (and also by happy coincidence a real bomb) which she claims is also for entertainment. (Coming up Next! Avicenna’s handy torture guide! For you edutainment!)
She hosts literature from the Straight Edge Vegan criminal, Walter Bond who is in jail for arson. You know, that crime where you set stuff on fire causing property damage and potentially killing someone with fire?
This work is pure straight edge philosophy which is fine if you keep it to yourself. If you start preaching a straight edge philosophy, then you come off as a dick. And it doesn’t help that the movement is filled with people who suffer from what I like to call “holier than thou” syndrome. It’s where you refer to other people as less than you simply because they have made a choice. Sure in the grand scheme of things some decisions are patently idiotic (Anti-Vaccine/Anti-Medicine/Creationism/Animal Liberation) and should be treated as idiotic stances but you never stop treating the individuals who follow these flawed ideas as human beings.
And Walter Bond fails miserably here. Co-opting pro-life literature to assault women’s rights as if a foetus were equal to a fully developed human beings, he not only denigrates the actual struggles of women across the world that are fighting and indeed dying to get abortions but also fails to realise that human cells does not equate to a human being. It’s not a right of convenience and pleasure, for many women it’s a right to care for children in an appropriate fashion. For the first 20 to 24 weeks of life the foetus is incapable of independence and even after that the foetus is heavily reliant on medical technology (which Walter Bond is against) to live. A testament to medical technology is that at 24 weeks the survival rate of pre-term infants is 96%. In most third world nations it’s around 25 to 40% depending on availability of technology. To put it in perspective the actual survival rate of all infants in India is 96% (ours in western nations is around 99.6%).
At what point is a foetus sentient? Babies certainly are not when they are just born. Sentience and self awareness can arguably be considered to develop post birth since due to the nature of our giant craniums we as human beings are not born fully developed. (it’s one of the reasons why we have such a phenomenal infant mortality rate without medical technology compared to other animals considering how phenomenally tough and survivable we are). Our weak and incompletely developed babies undergo a series of developmental milestones that include identification of self and response to names… and even then they aren’t as fully developed as the young of other animals. The consciousness of the foetus isn’t used as a determinant on abortion; it is the viability of the foetus outside the mother. To medics, the lungs are more important than the brain. The 24 week limit is due to the developmental milestone of lungs. Prior to 20 weeks the foetus has no lungs to speak of and cannot survive. In short, even if born it cannot be a viable entity. In most western nations it’s 24 weeks because we can save a baby with partially developed lungs. Most nations consider personhood to begin at 28 weeks for the same reason.
So… Cannibalism?
But Walter Bond obviously considers anyone who aborts a foetus to be equal to an animal murderer (which is anyone who eats meat or does research on one) and equal to a real murderer. Which is a step above the crazy of most pro-lifers, and we know Mr. Bond is capable of dangerous acts. Endorsing this vile human being is no different from the people who endorse the actions of Scott Roeder and Camille doesn’t disappoint in sinking to such depths.
And is it surprising at all considering literature from such individuals as the Animal Liberation Front’s Dr. Steve Best (a Ph.D. in philosophy rather than someone you would call in an emergency. Well in a real emergency, I suppose you call him if you have an existential crisis.) regularly features on her site?
His idea of Peace and Justice is like the ranting of Osama Bin Laden, if Osama Bin Laden were a Dr. Seuss fan. And if this is indeed his work then I would suggest that the University of Texas reconsiders their relationship with him. Because this is nothing short of a statement of the encouragement of terrorism and should be taken seriously. Lest we have another George Tiller incident.
Let’s just say that if we did what he wanted we wouldn’t have any farmers nor would we live in a society free of disease and vermin. I assume alongside his Ph.D. in philosophy, he knows how to till the land and produce food on a scale that can feed people reliably.
It’s pretty much this…
We wouldn’t have animal rehabilitation programs and we would lose animals to the scourge of poaching and people just not doing anything. If people have been paying attention, the only hope for the Western Black Rhino to ever return to the wild is captive breeding programs in zoos.  One notices that animal liberation aren’t out there having gun battles with poachers to protect tigers, rhinos
, elephants and thousands of other endangered creatures, in fact they actively attack the people who engage in these activities.
We wouldn’t have any meat, because everyone vegan lives a rich healthy life with their tiny inefficient farms. What Walter wants is a Cultural Revolution, much like Mao. Only instead of attempting to force an entire country to make a Great Leap Forwards, he wants a Great Leap Backwards.

He obviously doesn’t want any medical experimentation, or products there off. He specifically mentions antibiotics and steroids being present in meat (yet not one single mention of steroids being present in Vitamin D tablets. Vitamin D is a steroid.) without realising that cooking would destroy most of these things. Possibly he assumes that carnivores like myself prefer to eat our food alive.
He doesn’t want shelters, he would rather us spend money on animals getting nice homes when we can barely ensure our humans live in nice homes. Because heaven forbid we try and do something about homeless people and poverty before the kitties.
In specific he advocates that the biggest ecologists on the planets (AKA biologists) be tortured and killed (brutally no less, because professors of philosophy seem to have a lot of time to think up inventive ways of killing people) for daring to experiment on animals. I have a friend who has worked on research involving Von Gierke’s disease by testing in dogs. Apparently this friend deserves torture simply for trying to alleviate suffering by understanding the world. And I am classified under this since I am in medicine and by extension my entire field and lifestyle is built on suffering both of the animals experiment on and indeed of the patients who receive relief from their suffering. Oh and like Camille Marino’s earlier outbreak I assume he intends to target those selfish patients who chose to utilise the technology derived from animal experimentation to save their lives and those of their loved ones rather than die.
For someone whose existence is practically guaranteed through technology, he is awfully luddite about it. Does he really think the internet will run in his utopia of no technology or that people would indeed keep feeding him for philosophical discourse? Surely this is an individual who ranks amongst the least likely to survive outside the constraints of civilisation?

I suppose a response to this rant is in order. After all, someone needs to call him out on the nonsense he purveys.

Dear Stephen Best

I disagree with everything you stand for, you are an odious human being, a chancre on humanity. You stand against everything that is good and right with this world. You bandy a world view that encourages suffering and pain for actual human beings while being safe in a delusion from the suffering and pain you inflict because you yourself don’t get your hands dirty. To me you are no different from those mullahs who fire their devotees up with rhetoric and faith and send these young men to kill and die for their twisted ideology while you remain safe to spread your poison.

Go stand in front of the families of those dying due to disease and tell them that their loved ones deserve to die rather than some animals. Tell them that their children, their brothers and their lovers are less valuable than a mouse in your eyes. You say we are without compassion? I suggest you see how we treat human beings. Pain, Suffering, Starvation, Disability, Poverty are all facts of life for some people, and your philosophy would only increase that. I find it a shocking betrayal of educational ethics that you would be even allowed to lecture at a university for advocating terrorism particularly with your association with Camille Marino who actively threatens students with death.

You are a parasite, no different from Camille and indeed Walter Bond. Individuals who have benefited from modern society which tolerates their nonsense because we are a society filled with excess. I shall assume that like Camille, should you require the aid of “medical care derived from animal experimentation” you too will show the same sort of fortitude and double standards that she has. I shall assume you have never been to a country where there is no concerted effort to keep animals off the streets and keep pest populations down so don’t know what it’s like dealing with rat borne diseases. In short I shall assume (quite rightly so) that you are a privileged hypocrite.

I am not a good man, I never claimed to be. I try my best to do what is right and believe me what is right is standing up for those who you torment and threaten as many of them cannot. Because some of them are my friends, some of them are my family. The others are people who rely on us for a cessation of suffering. Yes, you may slander my character and call me a torturer and hundreds of other things but ultimately the people who I meet tend to not think so.

The ultimate irony is the biggest reduction of use of animals in experimentation is not by the actions of your luddite breed but by the actions of the very people you attack. The biggest protectors of animal life isn’t the placard waving celebrities PETA acquires to flog their viewpoint or terrorists like Walter Bond, but people who know how animals work and who experiment on them and learn.

I would call you vultures but vultures form a useful part of the ecological chain. There is no animal as patently useless as you are. And to prove that I am just as good as rhetoric as you are… Your movement is a disease and you are nothing more than cyst to be lanced with education and understanding. Throughout history men have stood in the way of humanity and progress. All have fallen before education and knowledge. Do you think you are any different from them?

What you need is a Doctor.

(Doctor to be. A real one)

I do seriously wonder what the University of Texas is doing keeping such an individual on their teaching register. Perhaps I can hire Abu Hamza to teach Media Studies.

Yar har, fiddle di dee,
Being a Terrorist is alright to be,
You should really go on a huge murder spree,
You are a terrorist!

I have few opinions about Steve Jobs death. I really do, to me he was just another CEO who made a product that I never owned mainly because I couldn’t afford to own them. The whole shebang was generally out of my reach price-wise. To me they were designer luxuries like a pair of expensive jeans, cool to look at but an unjustifiable purchase. And yes I wanted one, but luxuries being what they are and all…

But I was aware of his disease and indeed his work on more affordable things such as Pixar and their movies. I can see that he brought a lot of joy to the world via his technology. To me Steve Jobs is the man who mixed technology and art rather than the man who made smart phones popular or what have you.

I lost a friend to pancreatic cancer. The disease is quite insidious but I understand that Steve Jobs had a neuroendocrine tumour. This is a relatively slow growing tumour which means that he had an excellent prognosis of living a longer life. Most pancreatic tumours are incredibly aggressive but his specific one is not, it grows a lot slower and many patients outlive the disease.

I was aware of Steve Jobs’s usage of an alternative medicine based diet and indeed his delaying of treatment. This may have contributed to his untimely death but we cannot say for sure, it certainly wasn’t doing him any favours. But what we can say for sure is the alternative medicine bandwagon didn’t really wait for the body to cool before they started to circle the carcass.

Mike Adams in his typical charming way blames his death on medicine.

It is extremely saddening to see the cost in human lives that modern society pays for its false belief in conventional medicine and the cancer industry in particular. Visionary Steve Jobs died today, just months after being treated for cancer with chemotherapy at theStanford Cancer Center in Palo Alto, California. In recent months, he appeared in public photos as a frail shadow of his former self. The thin legs, sunken cheek bones and loss of body weight are all classic signs of total body toxicity observed in chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients.

Mike Adams sells quackery, his website actively advertises products that make him money. His entire spiel is reliant on you falling for his nonsense and forking out money for his product rather than medicine. In short he is a pharmaceutical company that deals in sugar pills. Hence his love of denigrating working products. Not once does he mention the special diets Jobs put himself through nor did he mention Jobs delaying his initial treatments before embracing real medicine wholesale. He had radical surgery to remove sections of tumour (Whipple’s Pancreaticodudeonectomy) and had to have a transplant when it recurred in his liver. The man was fighting a real disease and he fought it using medicine. By contrast a friend of mine who perished from pancreatic cancer died in under a year from diagnosis. Mr. Jobs survived courtesy of all this and experimental hormone linked chemotherapy which improves the specificity of chemo.

It’s utterly shocking that Mike Adams would flog his nonsense by name dropping the dead but he certainly goes onto parade a bunch of famous people’s names like some grotesque hitlist of medicine. He also mentions Michael Douglas on that list which is kind of weird since Mr. Douglas is still very much alive.

It’s a disingenuous mechanism of fooling the ignorant. See all these famous people have died from chemotherapy without mentioning all the famous people who survived with chemo. I see not one mention of Kylie Minogue in his list. Maybe it’s because she fought cancer and lived.

But what’s the sell here?

The simple combination of vitamin D and selenium, if taken in combination, could probably prevent more than 80% of all cancers in America. Yet the American Cancer Society and all the mainstream cancer non-profits don’t dare advocate vitamin D or selenium. If solutions were readily available to everyone, how would the cancer industry maintain its profitability?

Mike Adams the health ranger is trying to flog pills using the death of another human. Pills that do not work. Pills that will cause the death of their patient by not actually doing anything. Particularly since Vitamin D is produced naturally by our bodies and Mike Adams is providing a supplement that isn’t even necessary.

And it never mentions mechanisms or types of cancers or how selenium and Vitamin D kill cancer cells but not human ones. Wait a minute… If Arsenic is the Poison of Carbon that Means Selenium is the Poison of Silicon based life forms.

Holy moly! Mike Adams isn’t even making stuff up, he is just lifting out the plot of Evolution before the rest of the article degenerates into rambling nonsense and conspiracy theories about people tracking where you are with your iPhones. Which is incredibly stupid since if we wanted to spy on Mike Adams we would just look up his Twitter feed. What is it about conspiracy nutters who assume that the world is out to get them and then write about it on the internet where any damn fool can see it? Do they assume that the powers that be don’t have broadband?

He isn’t done with this though and tries to flog a friend’s nutritionist stuff stating that it could have saved Steve Job’s life. This man in particular teaches you “How to minimize your genetic predisposition to diseases such as diabetes, heart and thyroid disease”.

Yes, he is offering to do the impossible. Your genetic predisposition can be counteracted by removing other variables that contribute to a disease but it can not be eliminated because it is genetic. If your genetics are being changed, it is a bad thing. Changed Genetics are caused by Mutagens. Mutagens cause Cancer, not Ninja Turtles and he ends with this challenge.

I don’t mean to be blunt, but how many conventional doctors are dead in their 50’s and 60’s? All the people I know who follow drugs-and-surgery medicine are either dead or dying. If you’re smart, you follow those who are healthy, not sick! And Dr. Bisci is a shining example of authentic health — he sets an example we would all do well to follow for lifelong health.

In a bid to encourage readers to do something, readers who are above the age of 50 please go tell Mike Adams how you survived the scourge of medicine and how all us medics die young.

It is true in one way, doctors do tend to die younger than their patients. Medicine is a stressful job, one of the most stressful in the world. You go in daily to cure patients but there isn’t anyone who treats doctors themselves. We are more prone to falling sick due to exposure to sick people all the time and more prone to stress related disease. We are more prone to dietary issues because many doctors spend large amounts of time in hospitals and don’t get to eat balanced diets.

Because patients come first. A lot of doctors destroy their own health to treat patients. My mother got varicose veins from standing so long. My aunt had to have a hip replacement aged 45 after a patient knocked her over. Our family is filled with people who have injuries from being doctors. And not one of them wo
uld trade patients over our own health.

Maybe I haven’t been fair. I don’t think it’s fair to compare these people to vultures. Vultures are a part of life. These people are worse in that they are willfully ignorant. Delusionally so. Any evidence provided turns you into a pharmacological shill who accepts bribes (of ballpoint pens!) and they simply ignore you. I don’t know how many people have suffered serious injury or death at the behest of people like Mike Ranger but many of those are certainly preventable.

You seem to have confused opinion with arseholery

Do not google Cephalopodic Lust
with the safe search off. Trust me…

When you run a blog, you expect people to read your work. You hope that word of mouth spreads and that people form opinions. You hope that this opinions generates discussion, like a kind of typing based salon that is your comments section except there is less pastry and absinthe and more swearing and bad spelling mistakes. But it’s your opinion, you are pretty much allowed to say whatever you feel like. I can for instance make the claim that PZ Myers is a squid obsessed lunatic whose cephalopodic lust will doom us all to a death by those tentacled killing machines, and if we do not stop him and his  Japanese Whaling Allies they will destroy our only hope. Whales…

See it’s an opinion. It’s mental as fuck. It’s stupidly so. However I could have easily launched into a giant diatribe about Hemant Mehta using a inventive swearing and a variety of scenarios. Or I could have just said sexist and racist stuff (Women belong in the kitchen because men cannot cook and if women don’t cook for us we will all starve because our minds cannot comprehend the usage of fire for constructive purposes!) all day causing a variety of people to post in the comments.

But see if you didn’t realise I wrote the above things to make a point, you would feel indignant. You would begin the equivalent of a mob beat down. My comments would be overflowing! But that’s if I just valued comments. I totally do, but I value them for their value of their content. I like the feedback I do receive on the rare occasion that someone does post. But that’s the thing, the number of posts doesn’t matter as much. I would get more by being a complete arsehole.

But that’s not how you fuel discussion. That’s how you fuel angry invective and that isn’t conducive to an experience where you communicate new ideas and discuss things. It’s not productive it’s catharsis. It’s haterade of the finest quality, one sip and all that matters is telling me how much of a dick I am. A lot of people on some websites use this kind of method to create traffic. Post something controversial and then watch as the hate clicks come in. This is particularly common on websites that pay writers by the visitor generated.

Ben Cochran didn’t understand this difference. He assumed that controversial statement is conducive to discussion. It isn’t. Writing “Fuck Jesus” isn’t going to get people to discuss atheism it’s going to get people to get angry and make noises about killing the author or make noises about how they support the whole “Fuck Jesus” campaign.

Rabble! Rabble! Rabble!

His apology is not one. It’s a non-apology. He basically produced a horrid piece of opinion without any benefit of being parody or humour expecting people to clap him on the back rather than turn out to lay a feminist (or in my case a medical themed) beat down. Not all opinions are equal, most are kind of stupid. If someone said “I am of the opinion that the government is listening to our thoughts so as to sell us as cattle to the Reptilian overlords” then we are completely within our rights to treat you like a paint eating moron or a psychiatric case (which you may well be if you said something that delusional).

So let’s dissect what he said and where it went so wrong.

“People go to the doctor when they’re sick. If you’re a girl, sometimes you go to the doctor to get Pabst beer, or a pap smear, or something like that. What girl have you ever heard of that goes to a doc in the box for birth control? None of them. They go to their gyno. It’s a matter of efficiency. If you have a lung problem, you see a pulmonologist. If you have a heart problem, you see a cardiologist. If you have a cunt problem, you see a gynecologist.”

And make sure it’s on fire!

People go to the doctors when they are sick or for regular check ups to detect chronic diseases such as hypertension or diabetes. It’s why you have regular check ups, a lot of medicine is prevention rather than curative. Eat healthier, do some exercise, enjoy some time with your family… all these are part of my training.

And kudos on the tasteless pun. Pap Smear vs. Pabst Beer? I mean, if you are going to limbo under the bar of good taste you may as well impress us by setting the bar close to the ground and Mr. Cochran achieves that spectacularly.

And while I am not a fan of using the terminology of “lady bits” to describe the female reproductive system I tend to prefer the word cunt to be used to describe people who are high grade arseholes. I don’
t mean any harm to women, it’s a sad coincidence that the word also means vagina and can be used demean women, but quite frankly post his lovely diatribe if someone stood up and said “Ben Cochran is a cunt” I am damn sure most women would agree with that person.

Oh my yes! My feelings exactly!

So I’m sitting in student health the other day, sneezing my friggin eyes out and coughing up green oysters wondering what in the name of great Zeus’s beard is taking so long. I’m just trying to get seen and have this purulent mucus extricated from my hacking body.Half an hour later, I finally see some movement stirring from across the waiting room. Anurse exits with about half a dozen girls, all grinning from ear to ear, bubbly and giggly as if they just scored their first alcohol purchase with a fake id. In their hands they carried what seemed like a solid 36 month’s worth of birth control.

Firstly, there was someone already ahead of him. In cases such as Student Health which I assume is a low end primary health care run by staff grade nurses and perhaps a matron/nurse practitioner, people generally come in for healthcare check ups and small issues. Traditionally, one queues in this sort of situation. Trust me on this bit, I know how to queue. I am british.

Secondly, you have the cold. Not the plague, it’s not a medical emergency and even if it was you would have gone to a hospital. All it means is your head is filled with mucous. Blow your nose and perhaps invest in a towel and some hot water to breath in some steam rather than expecting some nurse to root around inside your nose like you are some sort of giant infant.

Thirdly, birth control pills are a vital healthcare provision.

First of all, not even porn stars need that much birth control. Second of all, do you mean to seriously tell me that I’ve been sitting here in misery for the last half an hour just so that this gaggle of preemie sluts could get a free pass on harlotry?

Fascinating my good man! Your incisive wit, observation and humour astound me. Perhaps they should have graciously heard your mucous laden honks and understood the underlying suffering and pain that you were going through. But no, they were too self obsessed in their own birth control to understand the precious flower that is Ben Cochran. Perhaps you should write some poetry or perhaps a song about how we don’t understand the suffering you were going through because some women merely wanted to have the ability to chose when they had children. Perhaps you should have gone to a real hospital where they would have seen you instantly and emptied your sinuses without the need of having to wait for obviously less serious cases to be seen.

Go read your Redbook in the lobby of a specialist while you get a mani as you wait to get your hatchet wound inspected. Leave student health for those of us that are in actual need of medical attention.

Look, this is a university—an ivory tower of academic prowess. We don’t need to be
handing out birth control left and right especially from an on campus location. This is a
bastion for the intellectually competent. If you find your talents to lend themselves to a more base and carnal nature, perhaps this just isn’t the place for you.

I am not sure that the appropriate term for a vagina is the hatchet wound. I mean, maybe it’s changed since I finished anatomy but I could have sworn the medical name for “the lady bits” is the vagina. And for a nursing student, Mr. Cochran seems awfully incapable of understanding why contraception exists. And he seems rather lousy at understanding the problems of people and their issues. And yes we should hand out more birth control, because you know what? People like to have sex. It’s great fun. But safe sex should always be encouraged and it’s cheap and effective to do so and prevents further complications. Now I understand Mr. Cochran probably is like me and a big fan of women and probably tries to have sex… But for the young woman there is an onus to ensure she doesn’t get pregnant while for me and Mr. Cochran there is not bar common courtesy. Using a condom is fine but some ladies like an extra bit of insurance “just in case”.

You guys can fuck off too!
Keg stands are not allowed in the Ivory Tower!

I don’t take issue with sex mongers. They serve their place. Hell, according to the bible, it’s the oldest known profession on earth. So you sultry sex fiends are clearly established, but this is a place of higher being. Please take your gaping holes elsewhere for medical services, and leave the real health issues to those that actually belong on a college campus.

Of course not, you probably like them in your bars and bedroom but not in the way of you getting seen for a bit of mucous? Heaven forbid the sex monger wishes to get an education, I mean if women get educated they may start having higher standards than some misogynistic neandrathal who follows the whole Frat Boy ethos. They may start wanting a man who doesn’t refer to their vaginas as hatchet wounds. They may want a man who doesn’t think of them as a sex monger. In short they may want someone who isn’t Ben Cochran.

And all of this is despite Ben being a nursing student. If anything it proves that Mr. Cochran’s talents are less suited for the ivory tower and more suited towards White Castle.
