The Anti-vax lobby is under fire. I have long stated that the anti-vax lobby had it’s success due to the success of medicine.
See, we made diseases rare. The normal childhood diseases were few and far between and their impact was softened by our technology. With that comes complacency. The anti-vax lobby 150 years ago was laughed at because their scare mongering may have stopped people vaccinating, but those who vaccinated lived. People quickly changed their tune when their vaccinated neighbours lived and their kids died to smallpox. Reality had a harsh way of teaching people a lesson.
Those who do not learn from history are doomed to make the same mistakes. I predicted that an anti-vax backlash would occur when the anti-vax got so successful that they destroyed the herd immunity of a western nation to the point that common diseases could return.
If you won’t learn by the carrot then unfortunately it is the stick. The price of Andrew Wakefield and the likes of Sherri Tenpenny, Mercola, Adams was increased disease. We are seeing record increases in common diseases that we were on the verge of eliminating.
The great fear is that the low vaccination rates in the west may translate to a disease that is genuinely a lot more deadly than Measles.
But the anti-vax won’t go down quietly. The benefit of not actually understanding immunology is that you can stick to nonsensically faulty arguments because they aren’t based on any real understanding of the situation. [Read more…]
World Vision are no longer a humanitarian organisation in my eyes.
See living in the UK, World Vision don’t push their Christian Credentials, so it was rather surprising to find out that they are a Christian organisation. So I went to check their American website. So while the British one has a vague reference to “God” the American one is explicitly Christian.
But this one line from their site got me.
We work in nearly 100 countries, serving all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.
But not sexual orientation, but then World Vision is not a force for equality. Okay it may have forgotten that serving all people includes the GLBT?
So I am rather disappointed in World Vision. [Read more…]
The following is an account of my ordeal at better birth of Utah. I will later post an email exchange between myself and the owner (suzanne smith) about the events that transpired.
[warning]This is a repost from Shame On Better Birth, a blog that grew from being about a single mishandling by home birth midwives to a more comprehensive site charting the various women who have been abused by the home birth movement. [/warning] [Read more…]
The Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) are a charity that came to my attention following some atheist on atheist harassment. I knew about them from their Academy Award winning documentary, but I only read through their website after this unfortunate incident.
Well ASTI offered me something rather cool, an opportunity to do some good out of this. ASTI are running fundraising trips, usually expeditions and hikes to raise money for charity. [Read more…]
I realise that this would probably eliminate me as someone who could visit Saudi Arabia, not only am I an atheist but I also do not believe that Saudi Arabia’s stance on Islam is healthy, progressive or safe. It’s a deal with the devil that has only harmed Muslims by entrenching fanatacism and legitimising fundies.
I wrote about a square in Riyadh, the infamous Chop-Chop square and my opposition to the brutality of executions especially a public event such as that. I wrote about the flaws in Saudi justice and how courts are determined by the reading of Korans rather than science. [Read more…]
I owe the Acid Survivor’s Trust International (ASTI) an apology.
You see, I didn’t think my article through. I made the same mistake as the people who tried to bully Melody and utilised ASTI’s name and works to argue against the bullying.
They deserve better than that. [Read more…]
Today is International Men’s Day and despite the self appointed guardians of Masculinity (AKA the MRA) having declared me as a Beta/Mangina/Whipped shadow of a man under the thrall of the femiwitches that control Freethought Blogs, I have decided to actually post something for it.
While men do have a big advantage over women in nearly all walks of life particularly in India where being male is like typing IDDQD in Doom. [Read more…]
The word typhoon comes via India, Iran and Arabic.
Toofan. Storm. The Typhoon. It is a word that conjures up power.
We can put aside what I think about global warming. We can put aside about what I think about religious missionaries. We can put aside all that and say this.
Typhoon Haiyan was a real monster. The speed, size and power of this storm is so great that we are considering the establishment of new criteria to judge it. [Read more…]
There is a book ot called Gay Propaganda and it is a collection of original stories, interviews and testimonies in English and Russian. It is an anthology designed to capture the lives of the GLBT in Russia both at home and indeed in exile. It is a provacative look into the life and the love of of the GLBT and it is set to be released prior to the Sochi Olympics in 2014.
All “good” people need a bogeyman to fight against. Someone who you can unite behind unquestionable hate. Sure you may disagree with your neighbour over taxation bands and how that money is spent on healthcare but both of you can agree that those homosexuals are evil and have it coming to them.
This was the case for Indians, Blacks and Jews too at one point. [Read more…]
