Islamophobia

“People say there are good Muslims in Britain — that may be so — but I don’t trust them, “Islam is heathen, Islam is satanic, Islam is a doctrine spawned in hell”.

“In Muslim lands Christians are persecuted for their faith. Their homes are burned, their churches destroyed and hundreds of them literally have given their lives for Christ in martyrdom.

“These fanatical worshippers are worshippers of the God called Allah. Ladies and gentlemen, that is a fact.

But the British Government, and the so-called watery clergymen, close their eyes to this evil that persists in our midst. It is called by our critics ‘the language of hate’.

“Enoch Powell was a prophet and he told us the blood would flow in the streets and it has happened. Fifteen years ago Britain was concerned of IRA cells. Right throughout the nation they done a deal with the IRA because they were frightened of being bombed. Today a new evil has arisen – there are cells of Muslims right throughout Britain.”

When people say Islamophobia doesn’t exist, I must turn you to Pastor James McConnell here.

Lets look at the list.

1. Islam being inferior to Christianity, possibly daemonic.

2. Any religion with a majority persecutes the minority. In the CAR Christians are massacring Muslims and vice versa.

3. And Hindus worship a bunch of gods. Doesn’t mean they are Satanic.

4. You just called it daemonic, that’s pretty hateful. Not to mention suggested your flock should not trust ANY Muslim

5. Enoch Powell reference, its not Christians you are worried about.

6. The “deal” they did brought peace and progress.

This is clear and defined Islamophobia. Vaguely coherent ranting designed to create fear and stoke hatred more than a coherent understanding of Islam and fanatics mixed in with the language of racism.

Thing is for something to be a “phobia” it has to be an irrational fear.

Is it irrational to fear an ideology that has inspired about 2 /3rds of the world’s terrorist groups and atrocities?

I think we have to make a strong distinction between Muslims most (99%?) of whoem don;t engage in terrorism and aren’t bad people but just individuals same as all everyone else and Islam as a religious ideology which drives a few individuals and groups and nations to do some truly horrendous things to the rest of the world and even other “Muslims” who don’t share their exact sect and which is a culturally transmitted meme – idea – rather than actual people.

Thing is, Steve, when you start slamming around figures like “2/3rds,” you should really be able to back them up. For instance, Islam has inspired more atrocities that capitalism or communism? (Let’s remember that the state of Saudi Arabia is actually a relic of European Imperialsm.) It’s got more blood on its hands than the Catholic Church? Those are pretty broad and hysterical claims. Citations, or it didn’t happen.

And what are the odds that you will be killed by Islamic terrorism? I’d say pretty darn low. Sounds like you might have an irrational fear of Islam.

  4. Holms says

Better still, dying to terrorism is even less likely than the risk of crashing your car. If you freely use the roads, but single out terrorism as something especially bad, then you are doing scepticism wrong.
