Few locations present as many challenges to the street preacher as do abortion clinics. Few situations are more urgent and volital than preaching to people who are entering a building to kill their unborn children. This article presents practical suggestions for street preaching outside abortion clinics.
See, the reason these clinics are volatile is because idiots are interfering in a personal healthcare choice. It would be pretty volatile if you had them interrupt other medical practices too.
It fits in with the dialogue of pro-life. You claim concern and in effect create a lie.
What are you doing at the clinic? I am saving souls… not harassing women making a medical decision and making life harder than it needs to be.
So let us look at the strategy here.
Become familiar with the abortion clinic and the surrounding area. Gather information such as:
This is straight out of the Animal Lib’s modus operandi. To create a primer of disruption to make life as miserable as possible in as short a period of time.
- Which of the clinic’s entrances/exits are used by clients?
- How close you can get to the clinic’s entrances/exits while remaining on public property, such as a sidewalk.
- What, if any, restrictions exist for using amplification in the area of the abortion clinic.
- The days of the week and the times of day surgical and chemical abortions are performed at thSoe clinic. This will have to be done by calling the clinic.
TL;DR – Where can we stand as close as possible to the clinic and how loud can we make a noise.
The abortion clinic will likely try every means possible to make the street preacher leave the location. Having information regarding the operations of the clinic, knowing where private property ends and public property begins, and understanding any local ordinances that might regulate activity will not only prepare the street preacher for opposition he might face from the clinic, but will also give him more confidence while preaching.
Because freedom of speech is important. Responsibility of it however has none. In effect it is pushing the boundaries of legality to be as irritating and as annoying as possible.
That is if you are a normal person. If you are someone who lives in a culture that shames and turns abortion from a part of BIrth Control to a terrible inhumanity and an affront to a divine judge who drowns people in fire? Then this is a lot more than an annoyance but an attempt to simply force you to do something you do not want to do and aren’t ready to do.
There are two schools of thought regarding the use of signs outside abortion clinics. Some believe using graphic images of aborted babies, focusing on the death of the child, is a good visual deterrent for those who are entering abortion clinics. Others believe high quality images of living, preborn children are a more effective and less offensive visual deterrent.
Both schools of thought have merit. The decision whether or not to use signs, and what kind of signs to use, is a matter of conscience and therefore up to the individual.
A third option for those who wish to carry signs outside abortion clinics is to produce signs that have text, with no images. Appropriate pithy sayings or Bible verses can make for very effective signage.
Signs can be very effective tools in both pleading with people not to kill their unborn children and communicating truth in a limited amount of time.
Straight out of the same playbook as the charming animal lib. Depict badly labelled gruesome images, claim it is abortion. The only thing I think these images show is that medical procedures are gross. Want to know something funny?
I could show you pictures of surgery shot in the same sort of light and without any actual labelling and simply campaign to scare you away from medicine. You would see pictures of humans cut open and go “my lord! I won’t let any of those surgeon monkeys touch me!”
What follows is a medical video.
This is a cataract video. Without knowing that, this is literally a surgery that gives sight to the blind, you could portray it as a man stabbing eyes and scare people away from medical care.
That is pretty much what the out of context pictures of the products of conception.
An anecdote here. One of my favourite photos of of an aborted foetus was NOT of a foetus. It was of something called a teratoma. A teratoma is a benign germ line tumour which is remarkable because it contains a mix of differentiated tissue. In this case? Hair and teeth. It amused me because it is not something you want inside you but we had pro-lifers using it to demand a cessation of abortions.
And no, I don’t think calling foetuses tumours or parasites help. That is our own language of spin to change the fact that what we are aborting is a foetus.
In most cases, the evangelist outside the abortion clinic will have only a matter of seconds (the time it takes people to walk from their car to the clinic door) to communicate with the men and women entering the clinics. More often than not, there is not enough time to make a full presentation of the law and the gospel. Quoting Scripture (Hebrews 4:12) to those entering the abortion clinic is the evangelist’s best option.
When in doubt? Why Not Quote a 2000 year old book at people!
This is basically attempting to scare people. The big man above is watching you and disapproves of your actions. Do what he says or the consequences will be dire.
- Genesis 1:27, “And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
Yes, when you have an abortion. You are literally aborting an image of god. No one ever says this when executing people.
- Psalm 22:9-10, “Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb. You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts. 10 Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb.”
Which is just a line that references being born.
- Psalm 127:3, “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward.”
If that is the case then for most of history, the god called Jehovah was a bloody lousy gift giver. Most of the gifts he gave were faulty and never performed as stated and often killed you. May I suggest that he instead provide a gift certificate?
- Proverbs 3:7, “Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.”
Avicenna – “Jehovah in his infinite wisdom spends more time condemning prawn cocktails and encouraging slavery than worrying about Abortions. Evil is very subjective”.
- Proverbs 6:16-19, “There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.”
The lord however is okay with bad counting.
- Proverbs 15:3, “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the evil and the good.”
Big Brother is watching you spoon….
- Proverbs 21:7, “The violence of the wicked will drag them away, because they refuse to act with justice.”
The entire dialogue of pro-life is so entrenched in self righteousness either from a religious source or indeed the philosophical arguments bereft of real world experience that pro-life honestly think they are doing things for the betterment of all.
One my favourite conversations was when I suggested that if a woman who was planning to have an abortion kept the child would you pay for it and the answer was no. So I asked my “charity worker knowledge question”. If you have food for 3 people but have 4 to feed, then how many starve.
He wouldn’t answer the question. He insisted that you should work harder to make ends meet. Because the truth is everyone knows the answer.
If you have food for 3 but 4 mouths to feed, then you have 4 people starving.
- Revelation 21:8, “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
We should play a game. God or Dalek.
In addition to citing Scripture, here are some short phrases one can quickly communicate to those walking into abortion clinics:
- “There are alternatives to killing your baby.”
But we won’t pay for it nor will we help you.
- “Give me your baby. Allow your baby to live and I will help you find a family to adopt your child.”
Not a gay one though. And never mind about the already ginormous amount of children who need families. Everyone likes little ickle babies, I am sure we will find someone.
And never mind the fact the key issue is also that a woman has to go through a medical procedure that is stressful on her because you think she should.
- “You know this is wrong, for God has given you a conscience.”
He hasn’t given us one. That’s why we are standing here shouting at you!
- “God hates murder. Please don’t kill your baby.”
I don’t think you have read the Bible. Jehovah’s pretty much for murdering people a lot.
- “God knows your child. He knit your child together in your womb.”
And just on occasion, Jehovah had a bit too much “Holy Spirits” before getting behind is draught board.
And the worst thing about this is I read enough embryology to laugh at this because embryology is far more cool than “magic did it”.
- “Please do not kill your baby. He or she has been created in the image of God.”
Again, this argument rarely comes up when executing people. Or are they not created in the image of god too?
- “Please don’t sin against God this way. You will stand before Him to give an account for what you are about to do.”
If your god punishes women for aborting a potential human then all of us are equally guilty. Every sperm, every egg wasted is a potential life.
- “You are making a choice. You are ending a life. You are killing your baby.”
Again you see the language of “it’s a baby”. The same sort of language that applies heroic measures to 20 week old premies leaving them alive but severely damaged. Living short lives before they succumb to their injuries. It is the absolute lack of understanding of what a baby is, the responsibility involved and what a foetus is.
- “You do not stop being a mother after you kill your baby. You will always be a mother.”
Again. More guilt.
Each of the above statements are true. In print, some of these statements might seem harsh. Tone of voice (which will be addressed later in this article) is an important key to effectively communicating these truths with people entering the abortion clinic. A sincere and pleading (not whining) tone of voice helps to convey the truth with love, without softening the impact of the truth on the heart and in the mind of the hearer.
And I would suggest this as a response.
These are human beings. Not hypothetical or potential human beings. But real flesh and blood human beings who for some reason or the other have decided to not push a pregnancy to term. Now the way I see it is cruel and harsh. Either you are ready to have a child or you are not. This is not trial and error.
We spend more time picking out our dogs and we show a greater responsibility to the animals we keep as pets than the humans we have as children. We think nothing about spaying or neutering our dogs. We make sure we have the right dog for the house we live in. But with children? All that dialogue goes out the window.
Either you are ready to have a child or you aren’t. There are umpteen reasons. It could be for monetary reasons, for career reasons, for health reasons. Whatever. They are your reasons. Whenever I site this there will always be a pro-lifer who says “What if she is selfish and doesn’t want the responsibility of a child”.
Then foisting a child upon her is not going to change her for the better, what it’s going to do is put a child at risk.
The tension in the air outside of an abortion clinic is palpable. No one working at an abortion clinic, or going to an abortion clinic, wants to see a street minister outside. That is why police are often called. Also, each day there exists the very real possibility of physical assault. People going in and coming out of abortion clinics are often filled with grief, mourning, loss, hate, anger, fear, confusion, depraved indifference, haughtiness, and a host of other emotions. While some may show no emotional affect, no one is happy when they arrive at an abortion clinic.
Yes. I wonder why people want to punch you if you claim they are filled with depraved indifference and haughtiness. No one really wants an abortion, but no one really wants root canals or vaccinations either.
When preaching outside, the preacher is often preaching to people he cannot see, those who are inside the clinic. This is why sometimes it is necessary to preach louder than in most settings simply to be heard inside the clinic.
Again, a play straight out of the Animal lib playbook. See this has two effects. Firstly? You cannot escape the douchebag yelling through a megaphone and secondly?
The staff have to work in that situation day in and day out. The jerk outside can take a break and get someone else to fill in. In short? It is an attempt to cause distraction of medical personnel.
Would you tolerate some arsehole screaming into a megaphone during your cataract surgery?
Due to the circumstances, when articulating the law of God the preacher should focus on the Sixth Commandment, “Do not murder.” Murder is defined as the premeditated killing of another human being with malice aforethought.1 This is what is taking place inside of abortion clinics every day — the murder of unborn children. (But the good news is that there is forgiveness and release from the guilt through Jesus. Please read, Are you a Christian woman who has had an abortion?)
And I would remind people who go to abortions, that the very same preacher who is attempting to hold the Bible as universal gospel and force you to adhere to it’s rules thinks that it is perfectly acceptable to treat you as a second class citizen and indeed own people as slaves. However? Due to the way humanity has progressed said parts of the Bible fell out of use. In time, this too shall pass.
Most abortions are selfish acts of convenience. Abortion is an act of self-love in which mothers and fathers put the love of self before their love for God and other people — especially their unborn children. The street preacher should therefore emphasize the two greatest commandments, as articulated by Jesus.
Yes. Because it is convenient to not starve and guarantee your children the best in life rather than guaranteeing your children whatever you can scrounge together and make do. Every idiot who says “Jesus will provide” is an idiot.
It is people like me who provide. And even our resources are finite.
The very argument here is to try shame and portray women who have abortions as evil and degenerate and selfish.
When the opposite is true. The street preacher claiming you want wealth so you put your job before your children? Well yes. What else puts food on the table. Not all of us can live a life of alchemy where we turn bullshit into gold. You want a career? An education? These are all selfishness!
And here is the thing.
It is okay to be selfish. It is okay to want things. Wanting things is okay. We all wanted stuff growing up. I had a picture of a Lamborghini Diablo on my wall because aged 8 I wanted one. Aged 28, I realise that I would need a large amount of money, little taste and muscles the size of basketballs to drive that but it was a want.
We all want material things. These things make our lives easier and more fun. We find fun where we live. So we often shame the poor for buying TVs or going out on the town rather than investing but here is the thing. They cannot earn enough to invest and rather than being unhappy and investing tiny amounts of money for tiny returns they would rather enjoy the life they have when they have the cash. So they may drive a terrible car and dress “poorly” but they are going to enjoy their holiday.
It is because these little pleasures make life more fun. You may think why would they waste money on “x” or “y” or “z” but that is because x, y or z is an easily acquired thing for you and so you can do without them. For them? those are achievements they have worked for.
Preaching should not only be directed to those entering the abortion clinic, but also toward those who will participate performing abortions: doctors, nurses, technicians, receptionists, and security guards. Everyone working at the abortion clinic is responsible for the death of children. They are all facilitators, accessories before and after the fact.
And this is the dialogue that has people threaten us with death and even kill us.
It’s okay. Some of us can bear it. Some of us realise the real joke.
That if the same choice applied to people on the other side of the line, I wonder how many of them would not be hypocrites? One of the last late term abortion doctors in the USA points out that he notices many people who once stood on the other side of the line seek to use his service.
Forgiveness can be found in Jesus
Grace, mercy, and forgiveness through the cross of Christ and His glorious gospel must be emphasized while preaching outside abortion clinics. While the Law of God can and will stop the self-justifying mouths of sinners (Romans 3:19-20), it is the gospel that is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16). Yes, the Law of God is good when it is used lawfully (1 Timothy 1:8), but it is Jesus Christ and Him crucified the street preacher must proclaim above all else (1 Corinthians 2:1-2; Colossians 1:28). Therefore, emphasis trusting in Jesus and his death, not on the death about to occur in the abortion clinic, in order to be forgiven of all of your sins. The gospel must be preached after the Law is presented.
Remember, the goal of the street preacher outside an abortion clinic is to see God save lives and save souls. He should never preach as a self-appointed judge and jury. “There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor,” (James 4:12)? Therefore, the preacher must balance the preaching of sin, righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment (John 16:8; Acts 24:25) with salvation by the grace of God alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), through faith alone (Romans 1:17), in Jesus Christ alone (Acts 4:12).
The law of our countries is secular. Despite what the charming young people outside the clinic insist. Good heavens! Otherwise a Bacon and Sausage English Breakfast would be most unbiblical.
Tone of Voice
There is a fine line between righteous indignation and sinful anger. It is very easy to cross from righteousness into sinfulness when pleading and preaching outside abortion clinics. Lives are at stake. Passions run high. The indignation toward the murder of unborn children and those who commit such acts is difficult to manage.
Nonetheless, Christians are commanded by God and His Word to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). No unwholesome word or corrupting talk should come out of the Christian’s mouth (Ephesians 4:29). The words should always be acceptable to God (Psalm 19:14). The street preacher must not be rash with his speech (Ecclesiastes 5:2), and he must be diligent to never respond in kind — to never revile when reviled (1 Corinthians 4:12; 1 Peter 2:23; 1 Peter 3:15-16).
As tense and urgent as the situation is, those entering and exiting the abortion clinic should hear love in the voice of the preacher, both in his pleading and in his preaching.
ConclusionStreet preaching outside abortion clinics is a vitally important ministry. It is emotionally and spiritually challenging. It can be physically dangerous. It is not for the faint-of-heart or the spiritually immature. Done biblically, soberly, and lovingly, street preaching outside abortion clinics can and is used by God to save the lives of unborn children and the souls of those who participate in the killing of the unborn.
