Four Lights »« We May Have Been Christian, But Now We Are Human

And You Shall Know us By Our Love

“They obviously have information on plots to carry out jihad, Oh, but you can’t offend them, can’t make them feel uncomfortable, not even a smidgen. Well, if I were in charge, they would know that waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.”

– Sarah Palin

This was at an NRA meeting. And it got cheers.

Sarah Palin demonstrates what is precisely wrong with Christianity, the Right Wing and the NRA.

It’s that it has lost it’s goddamn mind if this got cheers and this did. People were cheering simulated drowning, because we are too civilised a people to actually cut and punch and bludgeon and burn our way to pointless confessions. We have to get others to do it for us and label our own torture as enhanced interrogation.

“Do you know why those clownish little Kumbaya-humming fairytale-inhaling liberals want to be tough all of a sudden and control your guns?” she said. “It’s ‘cuz guys like [Sen.] Al Franken (D-MN) and [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid (D-NV), they’re not satisfied with just taking your money and your job, your truck and your property and your rights, your healthcare – they didn’t want to just stop at that.

The amusing thing is I am one of those liberals who think that a deadly weapon should be as hard to acquire as a car and be removed from people who cannot utilise it properly. And here in lies the problem. The entire dialogue of the NRA has shifted from responsible gun ownership to Yosemite Sam. I wrote about the difference between camp craft and survivalist ideas and how one is constructive and the other one is the attempt to dominate nature rather than to live in harmony. The difference can be summed up by how you discuss a single knife. The Kukri is a cultural tool across India and Nepal. Camp crafters discuss how it  can be used for everything. Cut wood, cut vegetables, skin an animal….

Survivalist talk about how it kills humans. What happens if the world goes to shit and we have to paint our faces, wear american football armour and feathers and fight each other for the last of the world’s petrol. To me, a survivalist is just someone who is levelling up in being a looter.

And the NRA encourages that dialogue of “guns” being the cause of a lack of money and a job and a truck…. Not the fact that the deregulation of the banking industry promoted credit since debt could be monetised as securities. This enabled people who couldn’t buy trucks and houses to buy trucks and houses with money they didn’t have and could not pay back. This offset the actual business loans which were used in the securities to prop up these terrible loans. So when this all tanked, business credit got shafted.

So you lost your jobs, you lost your stupid gas guzzling car and you lost your property. As for healthcare? You never had it in the first place, the only difference is that you are more likely to have it now. The NRA and Sarah Palin live and breathe the dialogue of gross ignorance.

And these are people who think they should be armed to the teeth.

My question here is this. Considering the majority of Islamic terrorists in the USA except for the 9/11 lot have been grossly incompetent because terrorism is mainly a DIY game and most people the D stands for “Dick it Up”.  Nearly every single attack since then has been perpetrated by someone white, male and a gun owner? Are we going to start pointing out that the NRA are the sort of people they come from? People passionate about guns, rather poor grasp of reality and a political dialogue that is frankly conspiratorial.

Are we going to waterboard the people responsible for the most attacks on random civilians in the USA in the past 15 years?

Surely if waterboarding is so harmless, Mrs. Palin wouldn’t mind enduring it herself. I mean I put my money where my mouth is. I didn’t write checks my arse couldn’t cash. If this is a mere baptism, I am sure Mrs. Palin wouldn’t mind taking a dunk?

I know what a person goes through when they drown. Indians don’t swim all that well. There are no pools and the beaches are fraught with danger. I have often said that this is surfer country. The waves are perfect. Shame the water is filthy but if this is cleaned up?

India could field a lot of surfers with these waves.

People drown here. It’s common. Mostly accidents, a few suicides. Most people cannot swim and cannot swim well. It is something I take for granted.

So the bodies come in. Bloated and foaming at the mouth. Hands and legs exhausted at a desperate attempt to struggle for a single gasp of air. It may not hurt but it causes panic, because you think you are going to die. No.

You know you are going to die. Your body gets cut off from oxygen and you cannot breathe. You are drowning on dry land. Every single bit of fear that I can see on those bodies that get brought in once in a while with desperate well wishers praying and hoping we can save them? That is what goes through the mind of someone being water boarded.

To claim it is not torture is to do so only to let you  sleep peacefully at night. And the suffering caused by this is on all our hands. My government may not have done this but we certainly sent people to yours to get “interrogated”.

So I will leave you with something from someone who knows a little bit about torture, being the victim of it himself.

“In my personal experience, the abuse of prisoners sometimes produces good intelligence, but often produces bad intelligence because under torture a person will say anything he thinks his captors want to hear –- whether it is true or false –- if he believes it will relieve his suffering,”

– John Mc Cain

Islamic extremists will be using her words as propaganda for years to come and will help justify the torture and murder of any Americans unlucky enough to be captured by extremists.

Torture-user or not, any experienced interrogator told to extract useful info from Sarah Palin would probably hurt themselves laughing.

They are as wilfully ignorant as they are evil. They do so much damage without even being the party currently in power … frightening.

On these gun nuts, I’ve often wanted to ask them at what point they will bust out their guns to fight government ‘tyranny’ and it’s usually ‘when the come to take our guns’ so the guns exist… to protect the guns. A lot of the fascination with guns probably works into the standard ideal of white American masculinity – a man whose teeth are rotting for lack of dental care, whose wages are declining feels more manly with a gun.

Torture – there is something to be said for being morally better than your supposed enemies, and I do recall stories of how useful information was obtained from Nazi prisoners by people who played them at chess.
