Anne Graham – Put down the Bible, Learn to be Nicer

The problem with assuming that a single book has all the answers to morality is that you do terrible things. Atheism as a group has a moral code that’s grown. Yes we have had “immoral” atheists but they were not immoral due to their atheism but due to their adoption of a moral code.

We decide on what is moral and what isn’t by a careful examination of the act and who it hurts and then seeing it’s knock on effects.

So drugs? We do not consider using drugs as immoral, merely a social ill in addicts. Murder? It’s the cessation of the opportunity to continue living. Thus it is immoral.

There is more complexity here but we do live in a social system where we have analysed things and done things because the analysis of the act has lead us to understand that doing this would benefit people.

The excess of the “Cult of Reason” were not due to atheism but them taking ideas as fact. Religion propped up the state, therefore religion must be destroyed as it is evil. No nuance and absolutes lead them to kill priests and destroy religious structures. It again didn’t exist outside the vacuum of the time period but it also was due to thinking in binary. A logical thought process of religion.

Anne Graham, the daughter of BIlly Graham and found of AnGel Ministries has decided to utilise the tragedy of MH370 to push her faith in the Bible. Because there is nothing in the Bible that says “Don’t be a vulture and utilise the tragedy of others to insert Jesus”. The unscrupulousness of Anne Graham is moral since the Bible says nothing about “not utilising a global tragedy to flog more Jesus“.

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.  And so we will be with the Lord forever.  1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

This is her justification. And it’s laughable.

On March 8, 2014 a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, vanished over the South China Sea.  Without a trace.  And with 239 people on board.  It’s being described as an “unprecedented mystery.”  Where is it?  Where have all the people gone?

Dear Anne Graham,

Jump up and Down.

See when you jump up, you are opposed by the force of gravity. There is a saying in aviation. Taking off is optional, landing is mandatory. Flight is a battle against gravity and while we have gotten good at winning fights against gravity to the point that air travel has become cheaper, we still sometimes lose.

Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 did not vanish. It crashed. In all likelihood it crashed. There are many more things that can occur that cause planes to fall out of the sky.

Anne Graham’s Bible has made her not realise how huge reality is. The Planet is enormous. The search area for this plane has been over a huge area. And as we have seen, the plane didn’t disappear without a trace. There was a trace that allowed us to track the plane to it’s rough final location, but a combination of Malaysian mismanagement and the erratic flight path of the plane made it hard to trace. In effect we are looking for a plane that was tracked every 15 or so minutes while in the air. This is a plane that travels at around 500 MpH. It’s a 125 Mile circle that we are hunting in and this is without adding in currents or further course corrections.

It’s not magic.

The pictures of grieving friends and family members of those who are missing are heart-wrenching.  I have prayed for God’s peace and comfort for them, as well as God’s direction of the search and rescue teams who are desperately looking for clues that will solve the mystery.  But the unanswered questions seem to intensify the horror…

Seems like Jehovah likes watching people die.

And in all this “heart wrenching visuals” did it ever once occur to Anne that just “maybe” her nonsensical conspiracy theory would hurt the victims? That she’s like a vulture waiting to claim her god had something to do with this entire event.

How could a modern airliner drop out of sight so quickly and completely?

When you stop generating lift and let gravity act on you unopposed you exhibit a state called “falling”. This causes objects to drop out of sight rather quickly.

What happened to the plane itself?

There is a rather comical notion that water will break your fall. It will break your bones. Unless your body is shaped to cut through the water, landing on it is like falling onto concrete. Now most planes are rated to land on water. They glide and treat water like a runway. They float for a sufficient amount of time for people to evacuate. The plane probably hit the water and broke up or sank.

Was it hijacked?

Unlikely, please don’t push weird conspiracy theories. It’s behaviour was highly irrational in that it made direction changes but rational in that they were made by an expert.

Was it blown out of the sky?

No, unlikely because it was flying for a fair while.

Did something happen to the pilots so that without guidance the plane plunged intact into the depths of the sea?

Maybe, but the fact remains the plane was airborne for quite a while before it fell into the sea.

Bottom line: Where are all the people?

Maybe they got out onto the life rafts, but the lack of a distress signal indicates that they may have died in the crash.

The answers don’t seem to be forthcoming as I write this.  But as I have prayerfully pondered all of the above, I can’t help but wonder…Is this worldwide sense of shock and helplessness, of questions and confusion, of fear and grief, a glimpse of things to come?  Is this a small snapshot of what the entire world will experience the day after the rapture of the church? Because the Bible is clear.  There is coming a moment in time when Jesus will come back to gather to Himself all those—dead and alive–who have put their trust in Him.  And on that day, the world will be asking, Where have all the people gone?  Not just 239 of us, but millions of us.

No, the issue is that this plane crash occurred with little to no evidence and it is a mystery. Not that it was “wizards” or any other other supernatural event.

You are implying that these 239 were raptured and that’s fine.

On that day, with millions of people directly impacted by their own missing friends and family members…in the midst of overwhelming shock and helplessness, of questions and confusion, of fear and grief…when the world searches for clues, how easily will they find The Answer in what I leave behind?  Instead of an oil slick, will there be traces of His grace and glory and truth?

There is a small flaw in your calculations here. See, let us assume Anne Graham is right and that she is pushing the theory that this plane may have been raptured.

But here is the thing.

Most of the people on that plane were NOT CHRISTIAN. The Pilot was a fan of Dawkins and Malaysia is a Muslim Nation. Many Chinese people follow the local Taoist/Buddhist traditions. So the number of Christians on that flight were a minority. If this was a divine act, then Anne Graham should be terrified because she has been betting on the wrong horse.

This is a thought I can’t seem to shake, so I share it with you.  Will your life, and mine, be a light to the world (Matthew 5:14) that points people to Jesus…after the rapture?

How is your life one that points people onto a path of good when you have utilised your faith and a tragedy to try to flog Jesus?

Put down the Bible, learn to be nicer to those who suffered a loss. Do not use their grief to flog your gods. It’s basic courtesy, the fact it’s not in your Bible is because the Bible was never a moral code.

It’s time to stop being so Biblical and learn to be human.

.. in the Southern Indian ocean. We’re now pretty sure it was lost there – although as I type we’ve yet to recover any wreckage but it does seem almost 99% certain now.

Now most planes are rated to land on water. They glide and treat water like a runway. They float for a sufficient amount of time for people to evacuate. The plane probably hit the water and broke up or sank.

Huh? I think there’s a typo or missing word or two here, sorry Avicenna.

Don’t you mean most planes* aren’t rated to land on water and don’t treat it like a runaway? ORhjaev imissed the point / sarcasm?

    “Was it hijacked?”
Unlikely, please don’t push weird conspiracy theories. It’s behaviour was highly irrational in that it made direction changes but rational in that they were made by an expert.

In grudging fairness here, the hijack theory could be right if the hijacker knew enough to fly or control the pilot to fly things his way or if the pilot was the hijacker. That cuases other logical problems true (e.g. motive – others not stopping him?) But still.

    Otherwise, great article and agreed.

    * Except for seaplanes and flying boats.

Link so separate for moderation (?) – in case you haven’t heard the latest news :

Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak announced on Monday night that new satellite data from UK company Inmarsat showed the Malaysia Airlines plane flew into the Indian Ocean.

Malaysia Airlines sent a text message to relatives ahead of Mr Najib’s announcement, saying: “We have to assume beyond any reasonable doubt that MH370 has been lost and that none of those on board survived.”

D’oh! Correction for clarity from #1 : ORhjaev imissed = Or have I missed the point /sarcasm.

As well as that typographical error. Sorry, going to sleep now.

If you actually think about ethics, you’ll realize that it’s unethical to adopt an ethical system by fiat. Simply saying “I believe X is right, because the bible says god says it is!” is not moral, at all – it’s abrogating one’s agency by choosing to not make decisions about what is right and wrong for you.

It is entirely possible that an airplane full of suffocated passengers (it’d have to be a cabin fire or something like that, because depressurization is survivable if you get low and slow fast enough), with dead pilots in the cockpit, flew into the water, broke apart, and sank.

Well, her brother (in purely coincidental accordance with Sharia principles) got control of their daddy’s big cash cow, so poor little Anne has to start from scratch in the competitive world of bible-banging and sheep-$hearing.

As I understand it, based upon an interview with what I took as an aircraft designer after the water landing on the Hudson, the airliners are not actually rated for water landing. In the interview the man revealed that no water landing had ever worked like it is described as theoretically possible with a modern airliner and all the advice given for passengers and pilots to follow is based upon wild-ass guesses as to what might help. There hadn’t been any testing of any of the advice.

The designer claimed that it had always been assumed that no matter what the pilot did the odds are that the planed breaks up catastrophically because the engine intakes hit the water before the rest of the plane. This was assumed to either rip the wings off or causes the plane to tumble into the water laterally.

Captain Sullenberger beat the odds by coming in steeply tail-down and waiting for the last possible second for the speed to bleed off before letting the nose come down. That was pure, old-school, seat-of-the-pants talent and airmanship. And a whole lot of luck. If there had been more waves or less visibility it would have been harder. Perhaps too hard. Before that landing nobody had even come close to landing on the water with a modern airliner at flight speed and having it end up in one piece. Some experts had speculated that it couldn’t be done.

Even after the Hudson landing the considered odds of landing a modern airliner on water in one piece are considered slim-to-none.

How can you have morals without God? Without God who determines morality?
