Indians,Chinese,Israeli’s,Germans living in US start preparation to get out of US and move back to your native country, A nuclear retaliation against US is imminent .
I despise this argument. Not the “run for the hills, the sky is falling” from this modern Chicken Little, but the idea that ethnic groups should “go back to their native countries”. And this was sent in by an Indian…
Firstly? Let’s ignore the whole nuclear deterrent and realise that no one wants a Nuclear War.
I once joked when I disagreed with Ian Cromwell that the best way to solve our arguments is for both of us to scream racist things at each other until we both lose. That is Nuclear War. Everyone Loses.
And this person deserves another sort of answer…
Listen mate, I don’t think you understand but….
I am ethnically Indian. I am not from India but from the UK. The UK is my country, I cannot leave it. India is as alien to me as the UK is to Indians from India.
My entire culture, upbringing and way of thinking is not Indian but British Indian. Indian is both an Ethnicity and a Nationality and one must remember to not conflate the two. My ethnicity may be Indian but I show precious little similarity. It is not because I think I am better than you or anything but it is because I don’t naturally feel at home in India. My culture is more an amalgam of Indian culture in the UK and British culture rather than purely Indian.
When people say that we aren’t really American or British, it is usually to deny us rights or to speak of us as an external group and stop our voices holding as much validity. When it’s “White Native” people, it’s usually to make it seem like we are foreigners who have no loyalty and are untrustworthy. I was not born in India. I have family in India but my life is British.
And when Indians say we really aren’t British or American, it is often to tell us that we aren’t being real Indians. That we are pretending to be white. ABCD (American Born Confused Desi) or Coconut (Brown outside, White inside) are used to denigrate us. Our cultural difference is put down to “wanting to be white”. We are mocked and ostracised and laughed at.
This is like telling African Americans they are terrible Africans because most speak non-African languages.
It is our home too, we cannot “go away” from it. It is where we have our roots and the people we love and care for and the things we enjoy.
