No Coloureds Allowed

Oh there were plenty of places like that once upon a time in Manchester. Places where you just couldn’t go in if you were “brown”. But Manchester has changed. There may be a few places like that but they are tired dingy little holes that are drying up. No. We are better for the changes we have made now.

No Coloureds Allowed is a “trope” many of us have. It’s where an establishment gets “rid” of you either through bad service or just constant fuck ups or just doing stuff that makes you leave. Oh I have been sat in seats in the back rather than the windows. I once got sat next to the lavatory where my dining experience was initially punctuated by wafts of rather chemical smelling air. There were other seats but they were “reserved”. I have even sat in a restaurant where I was roundly ignored till I just left. These were in the days before Yelp and social media, but things have changed. We have made “progress”. But it still happens.

Some of us have experienced it first hand. 

A party of 25 people were denied service at the Wild Wing Cafe in Charleston, North Carolina. Why? Because 25 Black people are scary and a white customer felt threatened by them. They were denied service after waiting a whopping 2 hours (The food must be bloody epic if you are willing to wait 2 hours for service).

After his party of 25 waited two hours for a table, the shift manager told them there was a “situation.” That a customer felt threatened by the party of 25 (because if Black people reach a Critical Mass they start demanding equality) which was alarming since these people were waiting peacefully for two hours. They were not causing any  real conflict.

Brown says while he was talking to the shift manager, someone in his group began videotaping the conversation. Brown says that’s when the manager became upset and refused to seat them. 

“I asked her I want to be clear with you,” says Brown. “I said so you’re telling me I have to leave. She said I have a right to deny you service. I said so you’re asking me to leave because you’re upset because he was recording you, after we’ve waited for two hours, and after you’ve already pretty much discriminated on us, and she answered yes.”

Brown says several calls were made to the corporate office in Mt. Pleasant, but he says they did not receive a call back, so he took to Facebook with this post Thursday.

I will never go to Wild wings cafe in N. Chs again! We (Party of 25 family and friends) waited 2hrs, patiently and were refused service because another customer (White) felt threatened by us. This type of racial discrimination is unacceptable and we have to put a STOP TO IT. The manager looked me dead in the face and said she was refusing us service because she had a right to and simply she felt like it. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT… PLEASE SHARE THIS POST… We need your help.

That caught the restaurant’s attention. As I said. Critical Mass Of Black People and Equality.

“We had a conversation,” says Stokes (company spokesman). “It was a really good conversation. He and many of his family and friends were there about a month ago, and they are regular customers of ours. So, they were having a going away party, and they just didn’t receive the experience that they have come to know and love.”

No…. They got treated like they were in fucking Jim Crow territory and hurt the feelings directly of 25 people in order to satisfy one racist. And only really did something about it when 25 people started making a big enough fuss that the Franchise would have ruined it’s reputation.

Brown says an apology was offered and a free meal for the entire group, but he says he’s not completely satisfied. Because you can’t just overcome racism with “sorry and a free meal”. The trust is gone. The fault may not be from the higher ups but of the local manager but the faith in the franchise is dead for these 25 people and others who read this.

    That’s got to be one of the worst company responses I’ve seen to claims of discrimination. That’s pretty much straight-up saying that a white customer didn’t like having all the black people around and they accomodated said customer and there’s nothing wrong with that. Normally, these things include a denial or an apology or both. I expect some backpedalling after this gets spread around the social media.

    And before anyone says, “Well, it’s the South, what do you expect?” – remember that actual people live in those places, and actual people get hurt by this shit all the time, and it’s exactly the kind of thing that we should be fighting against. That a place has a long history of being racist does not in any way excuse them from continuing to be racist, and there are a lot of people in the South of the US working very hard to fight against it. Broad brushes paint bad pictures.

    I have waited nearly 2 hours for pizza in Trenton, NJ but the wait was part of the experience. The people online (outside for the most part) shared wine, stories and experiences from earlier visits. Many knew each other from previous visits to the place.

    Not he same thing as the Wild Wings group experienced at all, sadly. The company did not (apparently) offer to fire, discipline, or retrain any of the responsible team members.

    If it was just one racist asshole in the restaurant complaining, what the hell was he doing feeling threatened FOR 2 HOURS. If that was even close to correct, his party could have been given a free meal or a coupon to return and moved out quickly. That didn’t happen so I suspect there were a LOT of racists eating wings. Or, the manager & staff were racist and it had little or nothing to do with the other customers.

    Sad shit.

    I can’t imagine any way that corporate could clean up this mess short of firing the manager. Anything else is going to sound hopelessly inadequate.

    This was an egregious example but sadly, subtle racism is just a part of life in much of the South. Not saying it is Kumbaya up North but it is not even remotely comparable.

    @ Mike Morris, #4: I have never waited that long for Pizza and I am from NJ. Where in Trenton is this “Pizza Nazi” place?

    DeLorenzos. Used to be in the (very seedy) Chambersburg area but the original shut down a couple of years ago much to the regular’s chagrin. I met and spoke with Chick, one of the founders, many times before he died. A true character.

    His son (grandson?) opened a new place not far away in Robbinsville near the gardens for sculpture. The pizza is nearly as good at the new place and they have a bathroom which the original did not :) The wait is still an issue but the crowds are just as friendly on line.

    RIDICULOUS.

    Serving a single party of 25 (who besides other things, all want their shit served at the same time,) is something any small or medium sized restaurant has to prepare for laboriously – in terms of food preparation, staff and accomodating other guests, because a 1 group of 25 is not the same as 5 groups of 5.

    In a proper restaurant, you wouldn’t have been seated in the first place but asked to leave immediately.

    You DO need help, just not the kind of help you think you need.

    Except this restaurant didn’t say “we can’t sit 25 people” it said “Sure Come On In, You have to wait a while though” and “Sorry, white lady says she is scared of melanin. Clear off!”

    If they had said “Sorry we can’t do 25 people on one order” that would not be news.

    Typically, a party that large might be seated in adjacent groups of 6 or 8 or whatever size the restaurant could accommodate close together. You don’t go to a small establishment with a large group unless you make prior arrangements. Clearly the large party was misled or the manager was an idiot in addition to being a racist.

    Well, Tiberius, when 25 white people all come in expecting to pay money for food, what actually happens is the manager tacitly apologizes that not everyone’s food can be ready at the same time, but please, do come in and spend money. When it’s 25 black people… well…

    Wild Wings is a nationwide chain–I’ve eaten in several of them around the country. Some of them choose to accomodate large impromptu groups by seating them at adjoining tables, some shove tables together. I’ve been with large impromptu groups handled by both methods. All can deal with groups of 25 without a problem–these are NOT corner coffee shops, and their seating capacity is pretty standardized at “medium large”.

    Conclusion: capacity of the venue is not the problem here. And no, the food is not 2 hours worth of epic. It’s good, but not that good (and it’s rather overpriced IMHO). They have a good beer list and a semi-epic list of different sauces for your chicken wings though.
