Kentucky is back on the frontlines of the Creationism push for religion in schools, with this time a variety of points raised by parents and lobby groups to encourage teaching the controversy. Mainly because Kentucky is seeing the effects of stupidifying education. Of not teaching science and teaching fantasy instead.
There is no controversy with regards to evolution. It’s widely accepted fact much like the notion that the Earth is spherical and orbits the Sun. In teaching a faux controversy Kentucky and many other states ended up with a dearth of adequately educated children who would go on to become biologists. So the new standards bring back academical rigour to the classroom.
Opponents ridiculed the new standards as “fascist” and “atheistic” and said they promoted thinking that leads to “genocide” and “murder.” By that logic we shouldn’t teach children about gravity because it too is “fascist” and “atheist”. After all, if Nazis were killing people for Darwin then Nazis were killing people by Newton. It’s atheist too. One doesn’t require the existence of a god of gravity or some sort of gravity fairy.
Supporters said the education changes are vital if Kentucky is to keep pace with other states and allow students to prepare for college and careers. Roughly two dozen parents, teachers, scientists and advocacy groups commented at a state Department of Education hearing on the Next Generation Science Standards — a broad set of guidelines that will revamp content in grades K-12 and help meet requirements from a 2009 law that called for improving education. What is shocking is that many of these “groups” are religious and creationist in nature. Which is like making decisions about CERN by contacting Alex Jones. Or declaring your medical policy after calling up Natural News. It’s bonkers that these people even have a voice.
It’s not fair and unbiased reporting. It’s treating two wildly different viewpoints, one supported by the strengths of reality and the other a fantasy as equal and indeed opposite. If we had modern dentistry one one side this would be the equivalent of bringing in some man who pulls out his own teeth to discuss the evils of “modern dentistry”. Now you wouldn’t even consider this lunatic who pulls out his own teeth to be the equal to a dentist. Yet when we discuss evolution and it’s validity as science we bring in pseudo-scientists by the bucketload. Men and Women who lack the very basics of high school biology and yet seek to teach their interpretation of it and indeed these people are brought in as experts.
And it is telling since the majority of comments during the two-hour hearing came from critics who questioned the validity of evolution and climate change and railed against the standards as a threat to religious liberty, at times drawing comparisons to Soviet-style communism.
In other news, teaching kids about the American Civil War and the evils of slavery is also against religious freedom. How dare we tell people that a divinely mandated method of conflict resolution as stated in the Old Testament is a wicked and inhumane practice born out of the denigration of humans by something as pointless as the colour of skin.
If your religious belief about a specific scientific fact are incorrect then I am afraid we cannot change science. If you believe in the Gravity Fairy we cannot simply teach the “controversy” that star jumps cause the gravity fairy to lose grip and thus you become lighter.
Likewise we cannot teach science to be less insulting to people who are wrong.
One parent, Valerie O’Rear, said the standards promote an “atheistic world view” and a political agenda that pushes government control.
No. It just says that humans evolved and were not divinely created in a Garden of Eden.
As for Government Control? It’s better than religious control over children and a education designed to cripple children in science and critical thought.
Matt Singleton, a Baptist minister in Louisville who runs an Internet talk-radio program, called teachings on evolution a lie that has led to drug abuse, suicide and other social afflictions.
Because suggesting that we evolved over millenia through a natural process makes you want to shoot up heroin? This here is why we need to teach our children critical thinking, science and basic logic. Lest we say stupid things like this.
“Outsiders are telling public school families that we must follow the rich man’s elitist religion of evolution, that we no longer have what the Kentucky Constitution says is the right to worship almighty God,” Singleton said. “Instead, this fascist method teaches that our children are the property of the state.”
Why are we asking Baptists Ministers who have Internet Talk-Radio about the education of our children.
It would be like asking me to give my opinion on the best hammer on some sort of show about DIY.
Dena Stewart-Gore of Louisville also suggested that the standards will marginalize students with religious beliefs, leading to ridicule and physiological harm in the classroom, and create difficulties for students with learning disabilities.
Yes. Yes it will. Because the crux of the argument here is that the only reason to not learn about something that is scientifically proven is a superstitious belief in something. Therefore if you believed that the world was flat then I am afraid science is going to disagree with you on that.
And it should. If we didn’t disagree with the way the world worked then we would not be here. Every single achievement we have has been done by someone overthrowing the status quo. Why should we eat these things only? If we use that stick we can eat other things too. Why should we just use sticks? Why not use stones? Why not make fire?
And why not teach science instead of kowtowing to the feelings of people who honestly don’t understand science, fear it and would rather everyone be stupid than their children be disadvantaged alone.
“The way socialism works is it takes anybody that doesn’t fit the mold and discards them,” she said, adding that “we are even talking genocide and murder here, folks.”
That is not how socialism works.
Socialism is about the social ownership of the means of production and cooperative management of the economy. The fact that Dena here doesn’t know the actual definition of a word she has used to denigrate an entirely different concept is testament to the lack of education within the region and the excessive influence of idiots on education.
To confuse an economic system associated with the left wing and associate it with right wing politics is just stupid.
Genocide and Murder are not legal in the UK and we have one of those “socialist” governments with things like healthcare and education.
I am willing to bet that if we told Americans that weekends and child labour laws and education were communist ideas they would drag their children out of schools and march them into coal mines on a Saturday just to not be associated with “anything socialist or communist”.
Others cited concerns about costs and student privacy or argued that the standards fail to teach key critical thinking skills. Several pointed to dissenters in the scientific community and said the new teachings will not fully incorporate evidence that may contradict human evolution and man-made climate change.
There are no dissenters in the scientific community with regards to evolution. The overwhelming majority of scientists of relevance support and agree that the evidence supports both evolution and climate change.
There are idiots who think you should wear glasses with holes in them instead of lenses yet we don’t teach the ophthalmology controversy. There is no evidence to suggest that human evolution hasn’t taken place and human impact on climate change and indeed pollution is well documented. What are we? Captain Planet villains?
And finally? Cost?
This is the future of America you are talking about. What about the cost? What? You are willing to spend billions on planes to bomb people in far away places with such a massive technological difference that you may as well be armed with witchcraft and sorcery. You are willing to bail out incompetent bankers and greedy idiots.
But this is the future. And if you don’t invest in it. Then you will lose it. Cost? Is that all? Increase Spending On Your Children, they are your future. If your future sucks it’s because you tried to cut corners on it.
If you think a decent education for your children isn’t worth the cost and you would rather cut corners and let them learn incorrect things then why feed them. After all? They are only going to poop it out. Why give them clean drinking water? Why buy them new clothes?
If you cut costs now you will pay for it later. Pay for it hard.
