Still think there is no Sexism in Islam?

I wrote a fairly large post taking on A Voice for Men’s Girl Who Writes and her stance that excused and lauded the behaviour of Islam within Afghanistan. In her video she made the claim that Islam treated women (in the Koran) better than other places.

And I responded with “Is that so? Then all the statistics are false because the 1400 year old book says so. Good Game Well Played! Going Home.

Reality has a well known Avi bias.

Rafiqul Islam, 30, blindfolded his wife Hawa Akhter, 21, and taped her mouth, telling her he was going to give her a surprise present.

Instead he made her hold out her hand and cut off all five fingers. One of his relatives then threw Ms Akhter’s fingers in the dustbin to ensure doctors could not reattach them.

This is not just a premeditated crime but a complicit crime where the family of Mr. Islam are complicit and knew what was going to happen.

Mr. Islam who works in the UAE did this because his wife was “disobedient”. She repeatedly refused to listen to him.

Because she was getting herself educated. She refused to stop studying for “him”.

He has been arrested and faces imprisonment for disfigurement in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

So why would he do such a thing? Well…

Jealousy. He couldn’t stand that his wife was better educated that he was. He had a grade 8 education, she was going to college. After all? How can one be the “Head” of the family if the woman out earns you. I fear your testicles will shrivel up and escape and your penis will invert while you rapidly turn into a woman.

This isn’t the only such case. Earlier last month a woman had her eyes gouged out by her husband for the same reason. She was aan assistant professor and he was unemployed.

I am sure GWW and AVfM would say that these women would not have been tortured and maimed and disfigured had they stayed at home and made chappathis (or pancakes) but I fear that’s because AVfM and GWW are terrible people.

But the problem with education is that people want it. Ms. Akhter is learning to write left handed so that she may resume her education.

I wonder what clothes she should have worn to stop this? Flapper Skirts and a Mumu probably.

Beyond the terrifyingly horrible nature of the crime, I can’t believe how shit-for-brains stupid you have to be to do such a thing.

Let’s permanently cripple the sole gainfully employed member of the household, that’ll help me through rough times.

    Not.

I’d say that letting this sad, narcissic specimen starve to death would greatly improve the human gene pool.

I sincerely wish there was a way to vote up your post like on Quora lol. I might make a few extra profiles to send you extra votes. Your tone and sarcasm are awesome. I once met an Islamic man who had a serious bit of anger towards a wife who wouldn’t wear a thong for him. He somehow thought it was his right to demand it and when his wife didn’t comply he became angry. While the concept of being a “kept woman” may make some women (in Islam and outside of Islam) feel like queens, they are far from such in many households. Kept women in too many homes are nothing more than sheltered concubines. These men don’t value the women, much like the man in your story. Even though she could have promoted his family status considerably over time, he still saw so little value in her that he cut her fingers off. Stories like this are just sick and we hear far too many of them.

I’m sorry but I fail to see how Mr Zafiqul Islam’s mutilation of his wife due to ‘disobedience’ or ‘jealousy’ is in any way condoned by the Koran.
You may have a point that spousal abuse & sexism is condoned by Arabic and or Middle Eastern cultures- but that isn’t necessarily Islam.
As far as sexism in religions goes- I’ve seen it in all the major 5 religions of the world, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaisim & Islam.

    Samsara,

So your defence here is “other religions do it too”?

Do you realise where you are commenting?

Islam may not explicitly condone spousal abuse (although I’m fairly sure I read that there is plenty of implicit calls for it), but it provides a smokescreen for bad ideas about reality to take root, JUST LIKE ALL THE RELIGIONS.

Anyway, it doesn’t need to be in the holy book if those who make the rules are reading the holy book in whatever way suits their personal objectives. All you have to do is “interpret” the words in the “right” way.

If you prefer faith over reason, then you lose your reality check. Then you use your deity to justify whatever action you take as part of your puny human emotional response process. Then if you have a cleric applauding you (or even, remaining silent) instead of condemning you, you have cultural-religious approval for your actions.

    Samsara,

    1. Are you familiar with the “No True Scotsman” fallacy?

    2. Avi just recently wrote a long post about the relationships and dependencies between culture and religion with specific focus on Islam and Afghanistan. It’s linked to in the first line of this post, so one might reasonably infer the arguments and positions laid out in great detail in the earlier post are related to the subject of this one. You could class the earlier (linked) post “supporting material” for this one. A bit like when an academic paper cites another academic paper so the author doesn’t have to regurgitate an entire argument.

The validity of the paper containing the citation depends in part on the validity of the cited paper, but anyone criticising the later paper would be expected to criticise it based on what it added to the papers it referenced. If a critic has a problem with the underlying arguments in the referenced paper, he’d/she’d be expected to address their concerns to that earlier paper.

I’d suggest the same principle could be applied here, or are you expecting Avi to regurgitate 14,000 words in this comment thread for your benefit?

“Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It’s nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith, and enable and elevate it are intellectual slaveholders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don’t have all the answers to think that they do.” – Bill Maher.

“There is a fine line between stupidity and depravity. Suspension of critical thinking makes it easier to cross that line.” – DsylexicHippo

    B-lar-
I’m not defending Islam nor any other religion.
Where you got that idea from I have no idea.
It certainly wasn’t from anything I’ve written here.
I simply think there are better examples of how Islam is ‘sexist’ than picking some sadistic nut job who happens to be Muslim.
There have been a few ‘Christian’ women in the US who have chopped their husband’s penis off, does this make Christianity anti-male?
And yes, if you wish to prove Islam is HORRIBLY TERRIBLY SEXIST there are much better examples in the ‘holy book’- look here
    http://wikiislam.net/wiki/Qur'an,_Hadith_and_Scholars:Women
I also stated that all the 5 most popular religions of the world have sexist tendencies, “JUST LIKE ALL THE RELIGIONS”. (to use your own quote)
My defense here is NOT “other religions do it too”- my comment was that ALL religions ARE sexist.
Geez are you guys really in medicine?
    I am surprised.
And to Mr Hippo & the rest of you- critical thinking is a skill that is developed- LEARN IT.
Judging by the faulty assumptions & logic deficits (jumping to erroneous conclusions) demonstrated on this blog -I’d say you’d better work on your ‘critical thinking skills’ quite a bit.
Otherwise this is just another tedious, overly emotional, barely rational, anti Islamic rant that’s common these days on the internet.

    Samsara,

I was not thinking of you when I wrote that comment about critical thinking. Quit flattering yourself. You’ve been rambling all over the place. You are the last person to seek advice on developing critical thinking skills. Your claim that ALL religions are sexist is just nonsense. Research a bit on Sikhism, will you? But why would you? After all it is not there in your “top 5″ list of religions despite there being as many Sikhs as Jews in the world. Some religions are inherently more sexist than others. Did someone say something about logic deficits?

Signing off with those paper credentials at the end of your rant – that’s classy.

    Not impressed.

    Mr Hippo-
“Research a bit on Sikhism, will you?”
    I just did. Why wouldn’t I?
And the astounding number of Sikh women annually decimated by honor killing was proof enough to me that Sikhism is as ‘sexist’ as other religions.

“After all it is not there in your “top 5″ list of religions despite there being as many Sikhs as Jews in the world.”
    Wrong again Mr Hippo.
Actually there are 24-28 million Sikhs and only 14-18 million followers of Judaism, although the source I used cautions ‘Some organizations may wildly inflate their numbers.’

“You are the last person to seek advice on developing critical thinking skills.”
Oh my, you really are dyslexic aren’t you?
Or you misunderstood again. Is English not your 1st language?
Anyhow, I wasn’t the one ‘seeking’ advice if you understand basic syntax.

= proof that you are, shall we say, “slow”, despite your silly credentials. You can’t even argue your own point justifying your precious “top 5″ list without coming across as a total fool.

BTW, adding gratuitously that “although the source I used cautions ‘Some organizations may wildly inflate their numbers.’” does not help your cause as that could go either way. In other words, with a little bit of deflation, they could well be similar.

You got me there, champ. Kudos for pointing out that I dropped “from” in a hurry. Brilliant, Sherlock, absolutely brilliant.

But first things first. Your original point, implicit in your wild ramblings, was about how sexism was CODIFIED in ALL religions. That rules out how how the mandates in each faith is actually carried out in a CULTURAL context which is what you came up with in your “research” on Sikhism and honor killing because there is no such thing in the texts.

It is tiring. I get it that you have learnt to memorize well in earning those shining tin-plated degrees pinned to you chest. If only you’d picked up some critical thinking skills on the way. But that would be too much to expect from someone delighting in finding typos and being a pompous curmudgeon. Despite your best, your juvenile is showing, Doogie Howser!

English may very well be your first language but unlike you, I don’t transact with “stoopid” as the currency.

Now just how does ‘I’ve seen it in all the major 5 religions of the world’ translate to being “implicit in your wild ramblings, was about how sexism was CODIFIED in ALL religions”?
Those flawed assumptions you persist in & quaint predilection for incorrigibly false narratives are starting to make you seem delusional as well as plain ol’ stooped.
Apparently you aren’t even bright enough to figure out that I used the author’s same flawed logic sarcastically comparing Sikh honor killings to some Muslim nut job chopping off his wife’s fingers in a pique of rage.
Glad you are so impressed with my academic credentials!
