Piano Black – Individuality

“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself” – Friedrich Neitzche

It has only been more apparent that man is afraid to respect the individual.  The ultimate individual is free of labels, groups, society and organizations.  It’s harder to walk alone.  When we let ourselves become labeled whether it be for good or bad, we are even closer to falling into groupthink. Mistakes are the inevitable, so is failure, so is success. We need fewer labels not more. There is power in numbers yet strength and courage in walking alone. Every single one of us is different, unique and we can provide thoughts, contributions that no one else could. By forming groups with the same ideas, thoughts, and mission is impossible. Because we weren’t meant to be the same people, with the same ideas and thoughts.  It’s a faux-comfort, and it’s a distraction we give to ourselves. I’ll admit, it’s hard being an individual, having your own opinions, thoughts and actions. It seems like once you start making your own decisions that’s when you also start pissing people off. However if you’re not pissing people off then you aren’t standing up for something. How do we approach this? Sometimes it’s required of us to work in groups, and we are social creatures. Working together is also the inevitable as well.

Does individuality mean to commit outrageous acts, wear crazy clothes, makeup, endless tattoos or piercings? Well, if that’s what you feel best in, if that’s how you are as an individual. However, individuality comes in all shapes and form in all levels of subtle. Whether it be the artist, the scientist, or the crazy cat lady, it’s how you see yourself. This also doesn’t mean to be idolized, or to seek for fame, simply because individuality doesn’t promise that. What it does promise is that fact you would take ownership of yourself, whether it be tragedy or success. You would know exactly who you are, where your moral compass lies, and creating a purpose for  exactly what you think you should be doing here on your very short time on this planet.

So take time, take a walk, unpeel yourself from the distractions of the world. Ask yourself, who are you and why?

It’s a rough road to travel, but it’s worth traveling alone.

    Excellent post. :)

We don’t have to walk alone, though. Our friends, who know we are crazy and love us for it, are always besides us doing their own, individual walk. :)
