If you haven’t heard by now, r/Atheism has started a crackdown on the meme culture that spread there as it was hard for genuine posts about atheism to get any airtime compared to the memes.
The issue is that it takes minutes to make a meme or a rageface or what have you.
It sometimes takes hours to make genuine content. I write at a ferocious rate but I know for a fact that it takes an hour or so a day to do this.
Face it. We need new atheists coming out and we need new writers and the like otherwise we will stagnate.
A lot of places have banned memes and ragefaces because they don’t bring anything to the discussion. You aren’t discussing atheism. You are laughing at idiots.
And laughing at idiots is great fun, but it doesn’t help us progress beyond laughing at idiots.
I can see why they did this. Reddit considers /r/atheism to be a circlejerk of people braying madly at religion no matter what. When we can be so much better than that.
There are countless new bloggers out there and new youtubers who never get a shout in for what they do because memes always win.
And it’s they who are the future of atheism movements both in the west and in other parts of the world.
How many times must we ape Dawkins or Hitchens. For pity sake! Hitch may as well be a saint for the veneration that takes place.
Let us try and create something new rather than keep beating the same horse. Let’s try something different.
