Gay? Scouts? In Texas! Hell No!

Boy Scouts in Houston, Texas voted this week to maintain the policies of the Scouts that bar openly gay youth who seek to participate.

Am I the only one who thinks telling them that there are gays who aren’t open about their sexuality? That they should fear stealth homosexuals? This way no boy can be part of the Boy Scouts lest they be secretly gay.

The Board of Directors of the Sam Houston Area Council voted to support the current membership policy of the Boy Scouts of America.

This policy in particular “does not proactively inquire about the sexual orientation of employees, volunteers, or members, but does not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals or who engage in behavior that would become a distraction to the mission of the BSA,”.

What mission does the Boy Scouts of America have where Gay People would be a distraction? I fail to see how the homosexuality of a boy scout would affect his ability to pitch a tent or fish or row a kayak. Does the BSA have a different set of goals to the Scouts of the world?

This follows a vote after a survey where parents, leaders, partners and financial partners voted by an astonishing 75% majority that they should ban openly gay members. If that’s the case then SHAME ON THESE PEOPLE. This is indicative of the level of homophobia and hate that is within the Houston area. What a group of fucking bigots. I mean seriously? What? Are gay children going to make out awkardly with each other?

The Scouts should not be about religion or sex. And the BSA’s insistence on doing JUST that is just dishonest and stupid. It makes for a sadder world where children in the USA cannot learn the things that I learned as a kid and benefit from what I benefited from.

Instead I am inundated with stories of prayer meetings that would have had me leave awkwardly and gay bashing. I am all for the banning of the BSA by the International Scouts as an entity. We cannot have them denigrate the name of the scouts through bigoted behaviour and exclusionary activities.

Nationwide, the BSA’s own official “Voice of the Scout” survey shows respondents support the current ban on openly homosexual members and leaders, 61 percent to 34 percent. Additionally, 72 percent of chartered organizations and 61 percent of Boy Scout parents support the current policy.

Then again? That shows the level of the fight facing people. The level of bigotry where the most important thing about a person is not the skills they have or what they bring to the job but whether or not they are attracted to men.

The person’s sexual preference for a gender has nothing to do with what they work as. This is purely discrimination against the GLBT and it’s roots are purely based in the level of homophobia brought about Christian bigotry against the GLBT.

It makes me ashamed to have been a scout. I am all for the creation of a secular scouting organisation to move away from the toxic nature of the BSA and provide parents with a proper alternative organisation that doesn’t try to insert Bibles into Children.

That’s why it will be our policy to show the scouts pictures of naked women at each scout meeting, and every evening on extended outings, and have their reactions monitored by the scout masters. If the boys don’t get an erection (the scoutmasters will have to verify flaccidity before being exposed, and verify rigidity after) they are out of the scouts.

And in order to make this test as thorough as possible we will sometimes do surprise inspections with pictures of naked men, and expel anyone who does get an erection. That way we can weed out the Extra-Deep-Cover stealth homosexuals.

I wonder if someone should tell them that pedophiles of the Jerry Sandusky type aren’t gay.

Naw, wouldn’t help. They think people become gay once they start talking about it. It’s like a magic spell! That’s why they have been okay with gay men and women in the military under DATA. People have to say ‘I’m gay’ three times to summon a Demon of Gayness, see. They weren’t gay until the opened their mouths to speak.

I’m a scout leader (cubs, boy, and venturing, the BSA coed program for teens). The forces of regressive homophobia have already lost this fight, with United Way chapters, Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, and many many religious groups refusing to comply with the discriminatory policies and/or withholding funding until the official policy changes. For that matter, a great many scout leaders themselves refuse to enforce the policies.

It’s really amusing to watch how desperately the religious right is working to make sure that they lose this fight in the very least dignified way possible.

M can help you with that.

Here in the U.S., the mission of at least a plurality of troops is to promote [white] Protestant cis heterosexual patriarchal militarist models of masculine “leadership” (where the [white] is by implication and tolerance of racist stereotyping rather than by open admission). There are exceptions, but the function of those exceptions within the organization is as camouflage rather than as an actual matter of diversity of acceptable opinions. The tents and fishing and kayaking are acceptable to the extent that they allow a publicly-acceptable cover for right-wing patriarchal bullshit.

(…and I say this as someone who was pushed out of the BSA for multiple reasons at once as it became clear that I was insufficiently misogynistic, insufficiently heterosexual, and insufficiently Protestant-apologist. Hell, I wasn’t even an atheist at the time — but when my then vaguely New Age predilections led me in my role as “chaplain’s aide” to naïvely take the “interfaith” schtick at face value and offer pre-meal prayers drawn from Zhuangzi, Wiccan woo, and (Gawd forbid) Hebrew prayer, I just had to be shown that I wasn’t welcome.)
