Those Asians

O’REILLY: And, you know, I think the one person who said, Look, this is a place where people come to to escape. This is, you know, generally speaking. But you know what’s shocking? 35 percent of the Hawaiian population is Asian, and Asian people are not liberal, you know, by nature. They’re usually more industrious and hard-working.

Unlike those lazy Hispanics and Black People who voted for Obama, the hard working Asians also voted for Obama…

By Nature! Don’t you know! We have hard work genes! Why! If I don’t batter out a massive post each day my testicles will shrivel up and I will go impotent!

They also all are inscrutable, drink tea and know kung fu, but are terrible at driving. But on the plus side they are good at mathematics!

They are Asians not Orcs! You aren’t “Naturally” predisposed to stereotypes! Gah! I understand Bill O’Reilley is low hanging fruit but still!

Apart from the racism, I notice that “liberal” is the opposite of “industrious and hard-working”. Because liberals are always the ones who want handouts, In spite of the net flow of cash from liberal states to red states, and the mega-rich grabbing government money.

Asian? Australasian? Ocaeanic? American? Same difference?

    (Really?)

NB. Science tells us there’s no such thing as “race” anyhow c’est nes pas?

Don’t flatter yourself, I’m pretty sure that he was thinking of Chinese there… after all, that’s what Asians look like, right? In my experience, people like O’Reilly count Indians as a kind of darker-brown Arab. (Also, the bad driver stereotype doesn’t extend to them.)

  4. rowanvt says

@4- The bad driver thing doesn’t extend to them because they’re all cab drivers so of course they have to be good at driving.

    *gag*

Gonna go wash my brain for regurgitating that now.

It’s the Spam. That’s the National Dish of Hawai’i, and it just naturally makes otherwise sane, industrious people vote for Kenyamooslim Commies. Its inherent spamminess does socialist epigenetic stuff to those Hard Work Genes.

    O’Reilly. What a maroon.[/Bugs Bunny voice]

It’s easy to speak from ignorance.

A person doesn’t even have to think to be able to do it. O’Reilly is proof of that.

Basically what Ysanne said. I’ve never heard or read “Asian” used in American English to describe anyone from the Indian subcontinent. “Asian” always implies “East Asian”. You would be an “Indian” or maybe a “South Asian”.

  8. Rodney Nelson says

You mean you’re bad at math and a good driver? You must be some kind of Indian or Pakistani or something like that. :-p

  9. says

Actually we are also good at mathematics… We also can drive. If you have been to India you would know that only the good drivers will survive…

The US census altered the definition of Asian in 2001 (or was it 1991?) to specificly include South Asians.
Uncle Sam so powerfull, he can change your race. But yeah, American history is very wierd here.
Before then Indians had a somewhat wierd status prior to WWII and eventual independance of India; whilst some folk were happy to include them as caucasoid/caucasian (as long as they didn’t claim to be white), they were subject to the same anti-Asian legislation as other Asian immigrants.

Not that the UK was much better, we invited Indians to fight for us in Europe during WWI, and when after the war they settled in the UK and married locals (aka, integration), peeps started crying for immigration restrictions, and for the first time the UK census introduced an option for race, dividing the world into ‘British’, and ‘Coloured’. More or less the same thing happening after WWII, and again in the 60s and 70s, with different terminology (old commonwealth vs new commonwealth etc.)
