Won’t Someone Think of The Children

Not You!!!!

Apart from you guys!

Let’s just say… Jesus makes you think of children a lot. Sometimes in not very acceptable ways.

Oh get your mind out of the gutter! This is an article about abortion and in particular Matt Barber’s take on it where he writes an open letter to the women and “girls” who have had an abortion. He does ask us to keep an Open Mind and Hearing Heart and maybe an Empty Stomach, which is fine if you are planning to do battle in The Kitchen Stadium to topple an Iron Chef but not if you want to talk to idiots particularly about a topic which is personal, upsetting and above all private.

The thing is Matt thinks the things he says are truths. Which is deadly as fuck, because this man genuinely believes that the entire history of the planet is based on a bunch of ignorant shepherds from the Middle East and their religion which was considered anti-knowledge EVEN during it’s own foundation. It’s a faith where the greatest sin and the deadliest thing in it was the acquisition of knowledge. Knowledge isn’t treated as sacred or important, it is treated as dangerous. Abrahamic faith is not just a blindfold to reality but is also a lead pipe to the head when it comes to it so you either are simply blinded or worse, you perceive it in such a warped and weird way that the only thing that will knock sense into you is a horrific shock. Where every single thing that the person holds dear suddenly and simultaneously comes down. My transition to atheism wasn’t a horror filled realisation it was slow and gradual and rather painless. I never really had to wrestle with any demons all though I will Invoke Rule 34 for anyone wanting to see that particular fantasy.

It is through obedience to Christ and in the authority of His Spirit that I write you this letter. It may be difficult to read, but I pray you will read it.

Oh great… Matt is going to write a letter because the imaginary voices in his head told him to. This does not bode well. But these are Truths. Gah! Just saying the word “truth” alongside this makes me nose grow an extra inch. I submit that anyone claiming to “Have the Truth” or whose website has the words “Truth in the title, address or description” should be roundly ignored unless you want to get angry or need blog fodder.

First, let us dispense with the oft-asserted notion that, lest one is a woman – more particularly, lest one has faced an unwanted pregnancy – one has nothing to say about abortion.

I… agree… Great! Now I have to go into hiding while PZ Myers sends his feminist bounty hunters to capture me. DAMN YOU WND.

The Tentacles are on the INSIDE

Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha, ha! Bring me Avicenna so I may feed him to a giant carnivorous vagina in the desert.

One can have plenty to say about abortion even if you are a man. You can educate yourself about the procedure and you can read about those who have undergone it. You can also read about the logic behind it and in some cases the technique so as to offer women the choice. There are male gynaecologists out there and some of the last late term abortion specialists in the USA are men. Arguably they have PLENTY to say about the abortion issue since they are the experts in the field. Again the argument assumes men can never understand what someone else goes through because men are giant, selfish infants rather than human beings. We are infantilising men and this has to stop. We CAN understand what women go through, we can make logical and cogent thoughts on the process of abortion and we aren’t giant space slugs who are only interested in women if they parade around in a loin cloth and gold bikini.

Aren’t you glad your mother chose not to kill you? I am.

I am glad I exist but if I didn’t exist I wouldn’t know about it. In the same way the eggs in my fridge will never know what it is like to be a chicken. They don’t feel anything. They have no brains, no lungs, no heart. And those are chickens! They are born functional unlike humans who are born as “Crying Potatoes”. The majority of abortions occur at a stage that’s ludicrously early and you aren’t a person at that stage.

Know this about your choice: Yes, you are still a mother. Yes, you have killed your child. And yes, there is forgiveness, love, redemption and healing available through Christ Jesus alone. Your inner voice was right. You have indeed committed a sin most grave. Those “pro-choice” flowers you were sold, though alluring, were, as you suspected, too good to be true. Instead, you purchased a bouquet of lies awash in the foul stench of death. You were told that for a few hundred dollars you could buy freedom, only to be bound by a horrible thing that, in this life, cannot be undone.

Everyone climb into the car, it’s time for a guilt trip. If by some small chance the WND article leads you to mine and you aren’t a regular reader and instead have come looking for some solace due to the guilt you have from an abortion then…

You aren’t guilty. You made a choice based on circumstances that I “frankly don’t care about”. Because these circumstances mean a lot to you. An abortion is not something most of us take lightly. The decision to get one is yours and yours alone. If you feel guilty about it then you have to ask yourself “Why?”. Chances are the answer is “Because people tell me to feel guilty and because I think that my life would be better if you had the child instead”. Chances are it wouldn’t have been better. You may see a struggling mother and think she is really brave and you may wish you had done that instead. But that’s also a type of selfishness.

If you can barely feed your family and bought a big dog like a German Shepard or a Newfie, I would call you stupid. You can barely put food on your own table and you want to feed a dog that eats close to a kilo of dog food a day? It’s irresponsible… Dog owners would be shocked by the lack of forethought.

But a baby? Doesn’t a baby require at least the kind of thought process you give to the purchase of a dog? When you get a dog you think about everything from walkies to garden, to work to feeding. If you are putting in more thought process into the acquisition of a dog than the birth of a child then you need to get your priorities in order. If you cannot afford to care for the dog then you don’t get the dog. If you cannot afford to keep the baby (and by afford I don’t mean just monetarily, I mean emotionally, economically, careerwise and education wise) then do not give birth. Hindsight may be 20/20 but your current feelings are what is important rather than feelings that may arise 20 years down the road.

Your decision is the right one. The people who think otherwise don’t have to care for your hypothetical baby. And it shows. Matt Barber links to a talk about Partial Birth Abortion. And this is why I defended the right for men to discuss abortion. Because it allows me to do this…

There is no such medical term as Partial Birth Abortion. The USA does not recognise it as a thing. It is not a recognised term by the AMA or the ACOG (American Medical Association and American College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology). My textbook of Gynaecology is british and doesn’t have anything called this in it. It is a purely political construct in the USA and dates back to a Lawyer who coined the phrase in 1994. You may as well demand a Rx for a cootie shot for all the reality this procedure entails. It is however a method of sneaking in legislation to reduce the ability of doctors to provide late term abortions which are extremely rare and generally done to women who have babies with severe congenital defects, ectopic pregnancy, hypertensive disorders, cancer patients or who cannot physically care for the baby such as those who have severe mental retardation, disability or are victims of crimes such as incest, paedophilia and rape, It is not an easy decision to make, the number of women who undergo the procedure are rare but this number falls with better medical care and diagnostic tools because these cases can be terminated earlier and if a woman and her spouse are more prone to a congenital defect (If for example me and my hypothetical birth partner realised we had a 25% chance that our children may have a congenital disease then I would have no qualms in getting a vasectomy) they can be told their chances and encouraged to not play the “congenital defect game”.

Your blood-covered hands can be washed clean by the blood-covered hands of Christ the Savior. You need only ask, receive and believe. Abortion kills God’s children and hurts women and men alike. Your child has an earthly father, too, regardless of whether he took responsibility. Abortion makes men fathers of dead sons and daughters.

Again. More guilt words. And a website aimed at terrifying the living daylights out of you by pointing out the aftermath of abortion.

Which is like saying you shouldn’t give birth to children because the aftermath of birth is rather terrifying too if you photograph it that way. No one really takes pictures of their kids being pushed head first through a vagina or covered in blood, mucous and meconium. No one takes pictures of the placenta. Or any suturing that needs to be done. Why? Because people want to remember their baby in the best light, not as a howling, terrified, slimy, bloody potato.

And just for that? I am going to show you something absolutely remarkable. In context and with meaning. It is gorey, it is not safe for the squeamish and it is not appropriate for the kids without adult supervision. It is also definitely NSFW unless you work in medicine. It his however a scientific miracle. It is giving people who are a type of blind a second chance at sight.

In short? This is part of my art. This is a procedure that gives sight to people often ignored and lets them be independent. Most of us will have a cataract if we reach the age of 70. Some of our children are born with cataracts and this helps them too. This restores vision. If I have it, it will actually make my vision so good that I won’t need my thick glasses any more. This is a procedure that has improved year after year to the point where we are capable of doing this piece of open eye surgery in 30 minutes with local anaesthetic, no stitches (The initial incision is done  so that the walls of the eye are held together by the pressure of the fluid inside the eye because sutures can cause astigmatism) and the patient can go home on the same day. This is fucking magic to many people across the world because it stops blindness. And it is a old procedure, the earliest references to it pre-date christianity and may even predate judaism. It is not the oldest surgical procedure (Trepanning is and the oldest still used procedure is rhinoplasty via the indian flap method) but it is pretty damn old in it’s origins. By the way? This video contains copious amounts of swing music. You may start clicking your fingers…

This is the procedure they do where I work. There is a superior procedure involving an ever smaller incision and ultrasound probe but that’s for decadent westerners. It’s pricier but produces superior results. Meatball surgery demands the cheaper procedure sadly and India has a lot of people who need it.

You may be wondering what this segue has to do with abortion. The language I used to describe this procedure is one of praise even when mentioning it’s limitations. You are intrigued and curious, some of you may have balked at the video. Some of you may have started it and turned it off half way through. A few of you may have made it to the end. You may have read the comments… of people who are scared and being told what the procedure entails. Of people who write in about how the procedure gave them their sight back. The procedure is common place in our countries but in many parts of the world those who need it have to struggle to get it because it is pricey or just not available. We forget how lucky we are. These people weep with joy when they can finally see again. Because to them this is nothing short of magic.

Yet if you saw it without my disclaimer or without my prose you would have no idea about this. If I portrayed it as “Doctors Stab Eye” you would think they were monsters. Context and procedure are important. Which is why depictions of bloody abortions are no more valid because they are portraying the procedure as unnecessary, pointless and done for the lolz.

“My mom thought it was right for me to tell you,” she said, “that I had an abortion and the kid was yours.” Her mom sat in the car behind her glaring at me. I’ll never forget the expression on her face. It was a jarring blend of contempt, anger and pain. Lisa turned and walked away. I said nothing. I wish I could say I felt shame, but, mostly, I was just relieved that my parents didn’t know. I never saw Lisa again. She moved away shortly thereafter. It was many years later that God showed me the magnitude of that day. I had sinned against Lisa. I had mistreated one of His precious daughters. From it, a child was conceived, and, due at least in part to my negligence and callous treatment of Lisa, that child died.

It’s not about you mate. It’s about her.

In this little story, Matt is 15. So lets get this clear. Matt had unprotected sex with someone resulting in a pregnancy which needed to be aborted.

Firstly? Sex Education Failed. Secondly, No Brains. I was not some teenage Lothario but even I knew that a condom was a must. I would rather my kids be safe than be sorry. I would want my girls to use the pill and carry a condom at all times. I would want my boys to carry one too. The responsibility is two fold, both genders MUST be responsible.

Lastly? Matt? You were fucking 15. She is fucking 15. What? Your paper round is going to pay for your kid? And remind me again about the job prospects for underaged parents? Good or bad? Are you going to live off mummy and daddy? No Matt. Apparently hindsight isn’t 20/20 in your case. Hindsight is clouded and needs surgery.

You had no marketable skills apart from a breath, no job you could ever do could fund a child, the child would have grown up in poverty if not for bail outs from mum and dad and this is even if Lisa traded in all her aspirations to be a mummy aged 15. It’s not about you. It’s about what she wants with her life. And what she wanted probably doesn’t involve having a baby.

And her mother is given the excuse to be a dick about abortion not because it’s the right thing to do but because of the hateful anti-choice screed that we are so familiar with. Her mother is angry that her daughter has to undergo a sinful abortion rather than angry that you two didn’t use any protection.

I’ve never been able to find Lisa, but I wish I could. I’d ask her to forgive me for the horrible way I treated her. If she didn’t already know, I’d tell her of Christ’s love for both of us and our child in heaven. I’d tell her that forgiveness, redemption and salvation are available to all who ask and believe upon Jesus.

If I were Lisa I would tell you to “Go Fuck the High Horse you Rode in On”. She doesn’t need your forgiveness nor does she need to forgive you or anyone else. What she needs is PERSPECTIVE. I remember being 15. My marketable skills was absolutely zero. I wouldn’t hire myself to mow my own lawn. By my current standards I was an incompetent dribbling idiot who dressed in stupid outfits and who had a stupid haircut. I was not daddy material. And even I accept that I was probably smarter than a 15 year old Matt.

There is nothing to forgive. If she hates you for this then she would hate you even more for being a sanctimonious prick.

The enemy of the world is a liar. He is wicked beyond comprehension. You were lied to. Satan loves death. In the context of abortion, he deceptively calls it “choice.” But it’s only death. There is no freedom in death, except for those whose names are written in the Book of Life.

Yes! Instead you should totally have children you cannot afford to support and then watch them die. In grace. After all, Matt is so interested in life that he doesn’t think about the quality of life of everyone involved. If Matt had a child aged 15 then all he would be whining about today is how he wish he had aborted it so that he could have had a proper education rather than trying to make do with all the skills and talents of a 15 year old. In fact he probably wouldn’t have a massive syndication with a fairly large blog where he could parrot his sanctimonious garbage and get paid for it. (The difference is that I am aware of my sanctimonious garbage…)

Come to know Christ, and one day, in that place where sin is dead and life eternal, the baby you never knew – that child who knows you, loves you and has already forgiven you – will rush to your arms and say to you: “Mommy, I’ve been waiting for you. Welcome home.”

Wait? What The Fuck! Matt is using the guilt associated with abortion that his rabid movement has created in order to flog more Jesus.

And he does so by portraying cells as a living breathing person. Maybe when Matt goes to heaven he will see all the millions of lives he has killed during the conception of his children (What? Life is only Diploid? Why is the potential of an embryo or foetus superior to the potential of sperm) Sperm is alive too and if sperm is alive then the DNA in it is 50% of a human being. Every sperm is capable of being a person as is every egg. So while women may have to deal with around 500 or so such “children”, every man will have to deal with millions of babies. Who died just so you could have one.

If my argument is idiotic then it’s only because deep down we know the pro-life argument is just as stupid.

I don’t see this as offering solace. I see this is as preying on those who are sad. This is like a drug dealer going around making people’s lives miserable on purpose so that he can sell them heroin. All in all a terrible human being.

If you aren’t sure about being a parent then think about it. If you are sure you cannot be one then do the right thing. Abort. We plan out our purchases of pets better than we plan out the birth of our kids. And that’s unacceptable. It’s not a dog, it’s a child. And children need the best. So don’t have them if you are 15 or cannot feed them or are working on a career that right now requires all your attention. Have them when you are ready and when you can provide the kind of life that those kids deserve so that they can grow up the way you want them to and so you can spend some time with them. So you can be the best parent you can be.

An undercurrent of many Christian op-eds is that, deep down inside, you know that whatever you did or are doing is wrong (be it homosexuality or abortion or believing in evolution) and that there’s some voice inside you that you’re just not listening to. The idea that people have thought about issues and come to different conclusions just isn’t part of the perspective.

And yeah, if my Mom had chosen abortion I wouldn’t be here, but if she hadn’t chosen sex on one particular occasion I wouldn’t be here either, and I’m not going to wage war against the evils of not having sex all the time because of it.

I’ll be far more impressed with the likes of Matt Barber in this world when they demonstrate that they care about kids at all. Independently, the Catholic Church and the Mormons have sufficient wealth to eliminate child malnutrition around the entire world…yet they don’t. Between all of the various denominations / religions, they could provide homes for all homeless children around the entire world…yet they don’t.

And, let’s be honest, very, *very* few churches spend major sums of money on the poor (children or not). The vast majority of the donations (aka dues) to their local church is to furnish their church (aka clubhouse) and provide things for the church-goers (aka members).

And the whole “…through obedience to Christ…” is just hypocritical nonsense from the beginning. Where in the 4 gospels did Jesus even hint at abortion one way or another? Where in the 4 gospels did Jesus say, “Give me all your money so you can build nice buildings for me, fill it full of junk, and throw parties for yourselves while you provide next to nothing to the poor around you”?

A forum poster once made a similar point, in that he would not have existed if his parents had not met during WWII. So by that logic, WWII = good b/c said poster would not have been born. I like the way he framed it!

    Poor, deluded, religious fool.

Doesn’t he know that the only guaranteed way to kill the Antichrist is by forced abortions? That’s why Pro-Death, NOT Pro-Choice or Pro-Life, is the best position to take in all this. Rather than ensuring women have freedom in regards to their own bodies, we must force them all to abort every baby to make sure that the Anti-Christ is never born.

After all, the bible says a lot of bad things will happen if a dragon and a monster with seven heads comes out of the sea and something about a whore of Babylon. Which means we can’t let Babylon be rebuilt. It’s all really complicated and metphaorical, unlike the story about the talking snake, demonic possessions, unicorns, global flood, and pits of fire.

Does the bible not say “Happy is he who taketh his little ones and dasheth them against the rocks?” It does say that, and obviously that one tiny portion of an old book of conflicting stories with multiple translations is all the proof I need to spread my agenda.

You can either stab the holy sword of Yahweh into the stomachs of pregnant women, or you can promote dragons and monsters coming to kill your loved ones. We all know which is the Godly choice.

The first hyperlink, attached to “Matt Barber’s” is broken; the address is being appended to the present page path instead of interpreted as a separate URL.
    Professional Asshat Matt Barber:

First, let us dispense with the oft-asserted notion that, lest one is a woman – more particularly, lest one has faced an unwanted pregnancy – one has nothing to say about abortion.

He means “unless” here, right? Not “lest”? Assuming that is the case, the statement becomes at least (at lest? :-P) intelligible. My guess is also that he means not “one has nothing to say about abortion” but instead “one’s opinions about abortion don’t matter”. If not, this really is a strawman position, since one would have to utterly deny reality to not notice that people who are not women say things about abortion all the time, and thus have things to say. Matt Barber has a shitty command on the English language, which is made more disturbing by the assertion in his bio blurb that he’s a constitutional lawyer. I don’t want someone who does not have a good grasp of what words mean interpreting laws, ever.
    Asshat Barber:

Abortion profoundly impacts us all. When you became pregnant, the child growing within you was, without exception, one of two sexes – male or female.

First off, aborting a pregnancy impacts exactly one person (and arguably two humans, one of which is not yet a person) directly, and a few others indirectly (doctor performing the procedure, medical staff, etc.). And that’s about it, unless there are other people running around projecting their own hopes and desires onto a mindless clump of cells, but in that case, it’s really them impacting themselves in response to the abortion; the abortion itself doesn’t actually impact them.

Second, no, not every person is male or female (Google “intersex conditions”), and sex differentiation isn’t seriously underway – that is, no measurable differences between XX and XY fetuses – until about 8 weeks fetal age, a point before which about 60% of abortions are performed.
    Asshat Barber:

Aren’t you glad your mother chose not to kill you? I am.

Not particularly. I have good days and bad. And as Avicenna points out, if you hadn’t been born, you wouldn’t exist in order to contemplate your feelings about existing, so the question would be irrelevant.
    Asshat Barber:

Know this about your choice: Yes, you are still a mother. Yes, you have killed your child.

    Oh for fuck’s sake.
    Avicenna:

But a baby? Doesn’t a baby require at least the kind of thought process you give to the purchase of a dog? When you get a dog you think about everything from walkies to garden, to work to feeding. If you are putting in more thought process into the acquisition of a dog than the birth of a child then you need to get your priorities in order.

Indeed. Creating a new person can be an immoral decision, and it should always be carefully considered.
    Asshat Barber:

I’ve never been able to find Lisa, but I wish I could. I’d ask her to forgive me for the horrible way I treated her. If she didn’t already know, I’d tell her of Christ’s love for both of us and our child in heaven. I’d tell her that forgiveness, redemption and salvation are available to all who ask and believe upon Jesus.

Well, that’s all sorts of creepy. Apparently you’re still only thinking about yourself, which shouldn’t surprise me since you’re attempting to leverage intense guilt and shame to coerce women into your hateful, irrational worldview.
    Stalker-for-Jesus Barber:

Come to know Christ, and one day, in that place where sin is dead and life eternal, the baby you never knew – that child who knows you, loves you and has already forgiven you – will rush to your arms and say to you: “Mommy, I’ve been waiting for you. Welcome home.”

And we close with a bizarre fantasy of some afterlife where a ‘human life’ that died without lungs or legs can somehow rush into someone’s arms and say something. Does aging continue in the afterlife? Do dead souls even have arms? How do souls engage in cognition of the sort necessary to recognize a parent (or parent’s soul – wait, how would one do that at all?) or speak without brains? Why does this sound less like an afterlife or other plane or form of existence and more like simply not being dead?

It’s creepy. Really creepy. The sheer numbers of zygotes, embryos, and fetuses (of varying stages of development) just… wandering around heaven? In whatever form they had in life (or pre-life)? *shudders* And worse, they can talk. What if they’re not happy to see you? What if they’re angry? What if they’re angry enough to kill?

um… its been 20ish years, and im *still* pissed at my mom for not having that abortion. annoyed with my grandmother too. didnt turn out well for anyone, in either case. (in my grandmothers case, we got a professional torturer. the world is so much a better place for *that*.)

Sorry, I got a bit confused at the statement about Abrahamic faith being a blindfold. Jews have never banned abortion, or thinking and questioning, or divorce. ‘Do not do to others that which is hateful to you, that is the whole Torah, now go and study.’ Hillel said that before Jesus was born. People usually forget the ‘now go and study’ part.
