Age of Kali – Beefeater

I have been trying all day to get my hands on this.

I failed. Apparently the book isn’t really published in the South. I may try a large publishing house like Higginbothams but it’s apparently a weird book.

I think everyone has covered this. My point however is something different…

They easily cheat, tell lies, forget promises, they are dishonest and tell bad words, steal, fight and turn to violence and commit sex crimes,

I will point out that India still has the unnatural sexual acts law which makes fellatio and cunnilingus a sexual deviation punishable by law.

How bad do you have to be at giving head to actually be reported to the police? God Avi! That was so fucking terrible I needed to call the cops. Maybe next time you won’t be as terrible as this!

I think David Poddar is thinking of a different kind of meat swallowing.

However this is the most amusing one…

“The Arabs who helped in constructing the Suez Canal lived on wheat and dates and were superior to the beef-fed Englishmen engaged in the same work.”

I am rather proud to be Indian and proud to be British. I know my history.

Which is why when someone says something like this all that goes through my head is “If the Rosbif are so indolent, vapid and prone to sex crime, and the vegetarian Hindus and (hah! I have lived in the middle east. Arabs LOVE meat! Middle Eastern Food is a meat lover’s heaven.) those date and wheat eating arabs are this superior. Then How the fucking hell did the beef eaters freaking take over both the Arabs and the Indians? Last I heard the incredibly superior arabs were on the receiving end of the colonial stick. As were the Indians. It’s kind of hard to claim that you are superior to the Englishmen in every single way after losing to them over and over.

I laugh about this but in India this kind of historical revisionism is very very common.

One of the greatest tragedies of the way India treats its history is WW2. Many Indians (including the Late Bal Thackeray, whose achievements in life drove me to atheism. A man of sectarianism, violence. He embarassed me to be a Hindu when I was 7, he sowed the seeds for countless hindu atheists across the planet) believe that Hitler wasn’t so bad. That the Japanese would “liberate” India. Why? Because one of the most famous Indian heroes was a collaborationist.

In WW2 2.5 million Indians died due to the Japanese. India was in the top ten HIGHEST death tolls amongst all countries in WW2. Indian soldiers helped forge India’s freedom by fighting as part of the deal of non-interference and non-agitation during WW2 in exchange for freedom. These soldiers guaranteed India’s freedom and fought both internal threats such as the seccession of states such as the Nizam of Hyderabad and Invasions such as that of Kashmir. Without these men and women India would be a fractured balkanised state rather than a nation trying to be a superpower. These 2.5 million deaths are casually ignored because it would portray a national hero in a terrible light. Subash Chandra Bose collaborated with both the Nazis and the Japanese during WW2 causing countless atrocities in India.

India would rather remember his ideological opposition to the British rather than the effect of his allies and the formation of the Indian National Army which if it would have succeeded would have been a second tragedy like China or South East Asia. Many Indians straight up didn’t believe that they fought in WW2 and often doing remarkable things.

And it boils down to literature like this. Where reality is ignored for fairy tales in order to feel superior.

The ultimate joke is Indians aren’t taught real achievements of historical Indians. Not many would explain the validity of the zero. The invention of cataract surgery and plastic surgery. The first doctrines of opiate usage as a pain killer. The first cleanliness doctrines. The discovery of the predecessor for vaccinations… Indian developed rockets were what the british took as weapons not the chinese ones which were a protected state secret even in the 1700s.

Ramanujam, Bose and even modern-day scientific greats as Ramachandran are all Indian. They never get a shout out. Most Indians don’t even know who they are. Ramanujam is more remembered for dying tragically rather than his mathematics.

Did you know most Indians couldn’t name the first Indian woman in space or the first career astronaut? (Kalpana Chawla). This is a person who should have been treated like Neil Armstrong! Why? Because there is a distinct part of India that is so fascinated by the achievements of the west that it feels inferior. That rather than build new things to be proud of it has to change history, but as it does it forgets the real things to be proud of. And this faction of people write textbooks. And politicians LOVE being told they are awesome rather than the reality of the situation so they flog these textbooks which fellate their ego and the ego of their constituents.

Save the fairy tales for bed time stories, don’t faff around with History or Science. All that occurs is you create generations who make the same mistakes as their ancestors. And worse, who don’t realise that their own culture is marvellous and worth preserving. Or worse who think that their culture is a lie because the only people telling them about their culture are liars.

Until then? I have a hankering for some Sex Crime… I mean a Big Mac!!!

Indians fought on both sides of WW2. Some 43 thousand made up the Indian National Army (INA) or Azad Hind Fauj, fighting under Japanese command at Imphal and Kohima and in Burma. The end of the war saw a large number of INA troops repatriated to India where some faced trial for treason and became a galvanising point of the Indian independence movement.

One problem with the INA is its connection with Japanese occupation of Burma and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Japanese forces committed numerous atrocities in these places and the complicity of the INA (and other parts of S.C. Bose’s provisional government) is a matter of controversy.

After the war, several INA leaders were brought before court-martials at Red Fort in Delhi. The first of these, and the most celebrated one, was the joint court-martial of Colonel Prem Sahgal, Colonel Gurubaksh Singh Dhillon and Major General Shah Nawaz Khan. The charges were murder, abetting murder and “waging war against the King Emperor.” This court-martial provoked massive public outcries in support of the INA’s efforts to fight for Indian independence against the Raj, eventually triggering the Bombay mutiny in the British Indian forces. The three officers were found guilty and sentenced to “transportation for life.” However because of the Indian response to the court-martial, the Indian Army commander, Sir Claude Auchinleck, commuted the sentences.

11,000 soldiers of the INA were released after cashiering and forfeiture of pay and allowances. On the recommendation of Lord Mountbatten and agreed by Jawaharlal Nehru, as a condition for independence the INA soldiers were not re-inducted into the Indian Army.

Disputable… One of the big problems that the freedom movement had with the British was that they wouldn’t agree to free India after the war. This led directly to Quit India in 1942. If Linlithgow had listened, or at least made a show of consulting the elected government of the country, some of the worst of the years 1942-47 wouldn’t have happened.

I won’t disagree with you about the INA or the “Provisional government of Free India”, though.

On topic, this is an independent publisher, not the board itself, or the NCERT, or any of the other official organs. The way CBSE is structured, they don’t recommend books to schools until the 9th class. Until then, they recommend certain topics, and publishers. The books themselves are not reviewed.

This book, specifically, seems to be for one of the fluff subjects they introduce from time to time so that they can claim to be giving the kids a “holistic education”. In reality, these subjects are ignored in favour of the main ones that are included in the board exams. And the publishers will probably get anyone with a vaguely related qualification to write the book, not spend too much money on it, and just dump it out into the market. Apparently, not vetting either the writer or the written matter is not a recipe for creating quality teaching material. Revelation!

I’ve been trying to find the actual article without much success too! It’d be interesting to see what passes for “sex education” in the hands of what appears to be thoroughly confused fundamentalist naturalist nationalist christian of the Victorian prudishness variety!

I am really confused as it mentions both adam & eve and vegetarianism. I thought the latter was pushed by brahminical/Vedic extremists who would not speak about Adam.

This is a common theme in demonization. The Nazis portrayed the Jews as a minority inferior race of weak, stupid people who had somehow enslaved the Aryan master race. Likewise, Obama is now portrayed by the right wing as simultaneously an incompetent bumbler who is constantly being rolled by foreign leaders and terrorists, and a master schemer so devious that he planned how to illegally become President before birth and has carefully hidden his plans to implement Sharia law, confiscate all guns, and imprison all conservatives in FEMA concentration camps until after being reelected.

  5. Midnight Rambler says

physicsphdstu: The publisher’s statement says that the author is a Seventh Day Adventist; they are both fundamentalists and vegetarians. Ironically, modern Creationism was launched by SDAs, even though they are considered semi-heretical for their beliefs by many evangelicals.

This looks similar to the textbooks I’ve seen in bookstores in Amritsar. I can’t say I’ve seen it specifically but the cover looks familiar. If you know someone up that far, see if they can look for it for you. Also try Amazon or other online outlets that ship to India to see if you can get it there. Another place to look would be project gutenberg (tons of free books), you may find it online and can download a copy.

You might want to make a distinction between Bose the nationalist you mention early on, and Bose the physicist (of Bose-Einstein statistics fame) (or maybe you meant Jagadish Chandra Bose? My ignorant western mind can’t tell if he “counts” as Indian for being Bengali, I’m not at all well versed in that business) whom I’m assuming you’re referring to along with Ramanujam and Ramachandran.

Rockets with knives. Taste the danger.

Hmm? In modern times Bengalis count as Indian unless they’re from Bangladesh. The trouble with the two Boses is that they were born prior to Partition in “British India,” when modern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh did not exist. This creates a problem because the Boses are famous figures, so both India and Bangladesh might have an interest in claiming them as belonging to their respective countries. Technically they would be born in the colony of “British India.” I guess Wikipedia says the Boses are Bengali without mentioning which country they belong to in order to avoid a dispute over whether they are Indian or Bangladeshi.

    What the ..?!

Really? India? The land that gave the world the Kama Sutra and tantric sex and I understand a whole lot of erotic public artworks?

I’m flabbergasted. I trust you Avicenna but I do find that very hard to believe.
