You know the drill. One of us folks from FtB or Skepchick announces we’ll be at a conference or convention, and the usual Twitter suspects show up. That’s why this exists:
@hashspamkiller: Also retweeting#Skepchickcon from@hashspamkiller1@hashspamkiller2@hashspamkiller3@hashspamkiller4@hashspamkiller5 expecting high LOAD!
This was, of course, no exception. With a hashtag that has the Skepchick name in it? Of course it’s no exception. So here, for the sake of documentation, are the folks who decided that getting their message out–whatever that might be–is more important than people being able to follow panel tweets on science and skepticism. Also, snark from me, because this stuff is tedious.
RichSandersen: Join your Egyptian brothers and sisters. JOIN the WALK OUT of PZ Myers’ panel debate at
#skepchickcon.#FTBullies
I asked PZ whether he was doing a debate again this year. He said he wasn’t. I’m not sure how anyone was supposed to know which of PZ’s panels to leave–assuming they were interested.
ElevatorGATE: John Loftus’ + Ed Clint’s rights are human rights. They are superstars skeptics in their own right! Be respectful

#skepchickcon.#FTBulliesRichSandersen: THANKS to the
#braveheroes who supported the WALK OUT on PZ Myers’ panel debate at#cvg2013 (#skepchickcon). Protest the#FTBullies.
Best I can tell, there were no #braveheroes at that panel. Maybe they were watching fireworks instead?
As for why Greg was on that panel, I suggest people wait for the video before flaunting their ignorance in public.
saramayhew: Of course
#skepchickcon wouldn’t have an evolutionary psychologist on their Evo Psych panel. That might cause real discourse to happen…
Fascinating how someone who hasn’t seen the panel knows that no “real discourse” has happened. As for why there were no evolutionary psychologists on the panel, do please let me know if you know of one who wants to take part of their long Independence Day weekend to talk to an F&SF crowd on a panel that is quite critical of the practices of their field. If they’re willing to give up part of their holiday to go through the process of getting a pass to get through a locked-down hotel, I’m sure we can set something up with them for next year. The process takes some work, but it’s doable. Shawn Otto has been exceptionally generous to us in that respect for the last two years in order to talk about climate science.
saramayhew: No evolutionary psychologist for Evo Psych panel, but they have a room with mixologist!

schrostherapist: Evo-psych: “how can you spot the BS? Panelists: Greg Laden, Stephanie Zvan (mod), Amanda Marcotte, Indre Viskontas, PZ Myers” What, no RW?
ElevatorGATE:
@schrostherapist oh this ISN’T a joke? Lmao lolz#skepchickcon
No. No Rebecca. That would be because the panel focused on evolutionary psychology as a scientific practice, not as fed to us in the media. As you may remember, the media was the focus of Rebecca’s talk at Skepticon, no matter how turned around Ed Clint got on that fact.
uberfeminist: Isn’t the sexy fembot on Convergence posters sexist?
#cvg2013#skepchickcon
A bit, yeah, in the exaggerated form that certainly doesn’t follow any function. But Connie’s shape doesn’t make her just a fembot. She’s a geek through and through. There’s also ongoing talk about depictions of Connie, because while some people want to see her sexualized, lots of us don’t.
I wouldn’t miss those table banners if they went away, for example.
uberfeminist: Turns out tits-robot’s name is “Connie”
#objectification#feminism#cvg2013#skepchickcon
Oh, “tits-robot”. Silly me. I thought you might be serious for a moment.
saramayhew: Wow,
#SkepchickCon is such a safe and affordable looking space… http://moby.to/fwt2yu (=_=)
See, now this is (yet another reason) why it’s silly to make public pronouncements about events you’re not attending. You take a picture of the mostly undecorated hallway people use to get to party rooms that are second-floor cabanas overlooking a courtyard and pool and assume that’s what the whole thing looks like. Instead of like this or this or this. (Oh, hey, that’s us in the blurry background.)
RichSandersen: I heard the evo-psych talk at
#skepchickcon sent people to sleep. Greg Laden was an embarassment again. Surprise, surprise.#FTBulliesRichSandersen:
#skepchickcon 2013 gets off to the worst possible start – a boring panel debate ft. PZ Myers, Greg Laden and Stephanie Zvan.#FTBullies
Um, you also heard that people had walked out. And you thought it was a debate. It wasn’t. It was a panel discussion between three scientists and a journalist who covers the topic and is asked to do debates on it. For the record, given that the 4-1/2-hour registration line still snaked back past the door to our room (which wasn’t even on the same floor as registration), it was incredibly well-attended. There were very few empty seats.
RichSandersen: After the shite that is
#skepchickcon, why not restore your “faith” in atheism/secularism by going to a PROPER convention –#TAM2013
Actually, TAM’s a conference. It also doesn’t have much of a role for atheists as atheists. CONvergence does, even beyond the SkepchickCon programming. Geeks Without God recorded there. There was a panel we didn’t organize about atheist F&SF authors. It’s a very atheist-friendly place.

No, actually, you probably should be paying attention to whether the critiques put forward are valid. Making up reasons that people who have been talking about the problems in evo psych for years are talking about them now isn’t just piss-poor skepticism, it’s also waving a big, red ad hominem flag. There you go. Four days of inanity. Yay. And that doesn’t cover the people who tweeted back at (or about) any of us without using the hashtag.
I loved the weird pissed off guy in the UK announcing that there was an official walk out of all of my panels…a walk out nobody there knew anything about.
But I especially loved the fact that after announcing the walkout, and after I was on a series of panels that had a packed audience, he then used his remote viewing abilities to announce that the walk out was a success.
Delusional doesn’t quite cover it.
All skeptics know correlation = causation. Fatal car accidents cause
skepchiconskepchickcon.Does RichSandersen remind people of “Commander Tuvok”, AKA Tim Groc? They both write in an aggressive, barely literate style, reminiscent of a toddler shrieking “I hate you”. They’re both incapable of reasoned debate, and see their opponents as dehumanised “baboons” worthy only of abuse.
A sock puppet, perhaps?
I’m not sure “sock puppet” is any more likely than just “sharing the same symptoms”.
I’m pretty sure that turning your back on your laptop for a few moments while logged into Twitter at home counts as a “walkout” but then again being a harassing piece of shit doesn’t make you a “brave hero” either.
Aww. You missed my favour Mayhew tweet:
I can’t wait to see what they have to say about The Bacon and Donut Breakfast and the Hot Tub Party. Those are *real* adult activities.
Woohoo, go @hashspamkiller, with its unfortunate friends since bloody Twitter have frustrating and arbitrary limits on number of retweets – @hashspamkiller1/2/3/4/5 … Two of which got suspended during the conference despite them getting a load of #teamfollowback tweeps to bolster their follower numbers. So someone reported them for spam, strange that no one they retweeted blocked them so who could be trying to freeze some peach?
As for the hashspammers themselves, well they do more advertising for the hashspamkiller than anyone. Usually get a trickle of @’s from people perplexed as to why there appear to be a bunch of lobotomised misogynists on the conference hashtags and thanking the hashspamkiller.
Of course. It was suggested that Empowering Women Through Skepticism turned out to be a success because Rebecca Watson didn’t attend.
Makes perfect sense.
The whole walkout myth they’re pushing is relying on two principles:
1. People are more likely to believe a big lie than a little one.
2. The more the lie is repeated, the more likely people are to believe it (aphoristically “a lie can travel around the world before the truth can get its boots on”)
Both these Big Lie tactics worked far more effectively for propagandists before the Internet Age. For these particular propagandists the effectiveness is highly dubious when the only people who are reading their spin-efforts at all are people with internet access and skeptical leanings.
I love the claim of mass walkouts that never happened. To these doorknobs, even one person walking out of a panel is a blow on their side, even though people walking in and out of panels is a con thang.
About all cons.
What the shit?
Sara draws anime. Does she really not know what a geek convention is like?
The other problem with trying a Big Lie at SkepchickCon is that we’re full up with social media people. There were two pictures of the audience taken at the end of the panel.
I bet the new claim with be that those two photos were taken AFTER the HIUGE walkout following the panelists’ emergency calls to sycophants elsewhere to come and fill up the seats again.
A walkout of which not a single participant took a photo, apparently? C’mon, walkouteers – show me a photo!
I can totally believe that some folks who buy into all the #psychodrama claims may have boycotted the panel – but a boycott is not the same as a walkout, and when the panel ends up with a full house anyway so that they don’t even notice the absence of the boycotters? Hardly seems like any sort of triumph to be trumpeting.
2013 gets off to the worst possible start…
A late-June event starts the year for Rich Sanderson?
Man, I thought I slept late…
The same people insist that PZ walked out on Catherine O’Brien’s talk at Empowering Women Through Secularism, which is not true.
Is *that* what sparked this inane walkouteering idea for them? Furrfu.
Considering Rich Sanderson is the one squealing that John Loftus and Ed Clint were forced by the all-powerful FTB/Skepchick/A+ cabal to dump Justin Vacula from SIN – because, you know, John and Ed are people known for their capacity to be influenced by people they loudly and publically criticise, and because you and PZ and Ophelia and Rebecca could give two craps about their ‘network’ – shows just how limited his capacity for thought actually is.
WOW, Sarah Mayhew’s really thrown in with the dirtbags. It’s fascinating to watch how people allow their ideologies to paint them further and further into a corner.
A walkout of which not a single participant took a photo, apparently? C’mon, walkouteers – show me a photo!
Can I be the first to say — why should I believe that the prevalence of people leaving panels to take a bio break or make a phone call is higher in the skeptical community than in society at large?
(Too subtle?)
Not subtle at all, smhll. Tackling the gist of your point head-on, the problem is that it’s the people arguing that anti-harassment policies are *not* needed who are arguing that the prevalence of harassers et al is *lower* in the skeptical community than in society at large. Got any evidence for that?
Hey, for a guy whose biggest claim to fame is “coined the term “#FTBullies”, which he asserts on his twitter bio and defends when asked as being a proud important achievement, his walkout WAS a pretty good success in context.
Clarification (important only for the historical record): Most of the penis pictures and videos were assembled by me and Desiree while lounging on my back porch the day before the CON. PZ came with a handful of penis pictures and some of those were added to the mix. My internet service provider is now conducting an investigation of course.
Other point: The only reason that July 4th is the deadliest day on the road in Minnesota is because of all those people running away from PZ Myers’ Debate during the big walkout and getting trapped on the highway! Apparently.
Now all us FTBullies are going to retaliate by tweeting shit about TAM.
Oh wait. We’re not. Because we’re not the sort of assholes who publicly trash conferences that don’t interest us.
PZ Myers paired with Kim Jong Un.
.
.
.
Huh.
(Actually, shouldn’t the pairing have been Dr. Myers with Kim Il Sung? Ed Brayton with Kim Jong Il, maybe?)
I was showing the audience dick pics. PZ asked for the “biggest one I had”. THAT MUST MEAN HE WAS SEXUALIZING ME AND NOT THE THING THAT WAS TOTALLY IN CONTEXT AND MADE PERFECT SENSE.
You know something these people have in common with more formally organized hate groups? A problem with projection. Racist groups scour the media for proof that racism against whites is real and the worst thing ever!!1! The MRAs (a lot of overlap with these shits) are bonkers about the terrible misandry of the establishment ruled by men. Xtian homophobic groups are crying persecution of heterowhatsits.
I don’t know. It’s terribly fucking dull and predictable. I’d ask them to get a new shtick, but it would probably be something too vile to contemplate.
Also, who wastes 90% of their free time getting their hate on? No one I want to be.
Wait, isn’t that exactly what they’re usually telling us women we should do? Defend ourselves, punch the guy, stop being such a delicate special butterfly-snowflake?
The conversation with Amy is priceless. There’s nothing anybody from FtB or Skepchicks can do that they’ll not complain about.
And then cue in Sara Mayhew with the one Sili linked:
First bashing Amy’s work as “hommade”*, evoking stereotypes of inferior, not professionally made stuff and then her of all people trying to discredit something because it has “sparkles”**. At least at one time her own Twitter page sparkled so much it hurt to look at it.
Then going after a workshop for children (not that there’s anything wrong with adults wanting to have fun with those things).
And all this coming from somebody who basically draws comics for grown ups for a living, which means that she’s about as dishonest and hypocritical as it gets.
*Not that there’s anything wrong with “homemade”. I’m a passionate crafter.
**Sparkle Surlys rock, believe me.
Remember several months ago when Sara Mayhew compared Amy’s work to children’s art on Twitter? She apologized when her childish spitefulness was pointed out. Guess that apology didn’t take. What a dishonest, vicious, petty, hypocrite. Wonder how the “Come to TAM and hang out with assholes” campaign is going?
It’s almost worth wading through all that crap just for the snark.
Almost.
Snark on, Steph!
I suspect it’s making virtually no impact at all. Most of the newbies to TAM come through TV stuff with Penn & Teller etc, and most of the repeats and refuseniks made up their minds a long time ago.
As Amy said on the “Fight the Trolls” panel at CONvergence, the best revenge is success. She has a successful business, and Sara Mahew’s impugning the quality of her work looks more and more pathetic.
This makes me so sad. These people must be so lonely and miserable to spend all their time hating on people and events that have nothing to do with them. Some of them are probably USian which means they dedicated a substantial portion of their holiday weekends to sneering at people who were actually having fun!
Hey “brave heroes”, maybe you’d be less pissy and miserable if you stopped worrying so much about people who don’t share your obviously righteous and unquestionable opinions and spent a little more time trying to enjoy life.
@19 I was trying to be ironic.
Wow. Those are some dedicated haters. They don’t let little things like reality or decency keep them from getting their hate on, do they? They don’t even take holidays off. That’s…..really something.
Dan,
At least they have each other?
The closest thing to a walkout during EWTS was my meeting PeeZed outside the conference room after I’d gone to take a piss while Vacula postured in the final Q&A session. I thought it was a better use of my time.
@32 I figured that out after I’d had my coffee and took another look. Apologies for the misreading.
that, from the woman who earned her fame in the skepticims/atheism movement with comic-books (which are usually also derided as something for “adult children”)? *facepalm*
“affordable looking”, oh teh noes.
mostly i find the stuff that has nothing to do with CONvergence annoying as fuck, because they’re making it hard for people to follow the events at the con; the parts where they call things for children “childish”? just funny.
