He Came Back

Not content to ask a question based on a false premise* at the Fight the Trolls panel at CONvergence/SkepchickCon, talk through the entirety of the answer, and storm out afterward, our little friend from yesterday had a go at Amy and Rebecca in the dealers room today.

Picture below the fold. You know you want to.

A rather sad looking young man yelling at Surly Amy.

The face of rightness.

As he was the one guy out of 6,000 or so trying to make the SkepchickCon crew feel unwelcome, there was a certain amount of hilarity inspired by his…efforts.

rebeccawatson: You guys I can’t believe none of us remembered to care about Saudi Arabia. I guess that’s it for feminism. I’ll get my coat. #cvg2013Screen capture of tweet. Text provided in the post.

AmandaMarcotte: @rebeccawatson I wonder how feminists in Saudi Arabia would feel about that sentiment. Except he denied their existence.

rebeccawatson: @AmandaMarcotte they exist but they don’t care enough, I betScreen capture of tweet. Text provided in the post.

majda72: @AmandaMarcotte @rebeccawatson as one of those Saudi feminists I couldn’t have said it better myself

Screen capture of tweet. Text provided in the post.rebeccawatson: @majda72 @AmandaMarcotte look at the pic I just RTed. You’re trying to tell me that guy is wrong??? That is the face of rightness

AmandaMarcotte: @rebeccawatson @majda72 That guy clearly knows everything. I humbly submit to his greater, manly wisdom.

rebeccawatson: @AmandaMarcotte @majda72 indeed. now that this whole feminism thing is busted, we’re gonna have so much free time. Guess I’ll get pregnantScreen capture of tweet. Text provided in the post.

SurlyAmy: Guy just yelled at me while saying feminists silence critics. Lol. How do these people not see how funny they are? #cvg2013 #skepchickcon

SurlyAmy: Same guy also asked a question at the troll panel that was answered. Guess we should work harder on our so called silencing techniques.

Screen capture of tweet. Text provided in the post.Popehat: .@SurlyAmy THE YELLING SHOWS HOW RIGHT AND SOCIALLY CAPABLE HE IS. WHY ARE YOU OPPRESSING HIM WITH YOUR SILENCING POWER VOICE WORDS.

Screen capture of tweet. Text provided in the post.SurlyAmy: Ha! RT @jailawrites: @ImprobableJoe @AmandaMarcotte @rebeccawatson …are we sure he’s not cosplaying a terrible human being?

To top it all off, once the guy was done, he ran off further into the dealers room. That meant he had to come back past the SurlyRamics and Skepchick tables again before he could leave. Luckily for him, there were two aisles through that narrow area, so he didn’t have to listen to any of those silencing feminists as he trotted by.

Me? I was moving furniture, so I missed the whole thing. *sniff*

* Said premise? That feminists were hypocritical in not calling out Bill Maher’s sexism against Sarah Palin.

Oh, yeah, ZERO feminists called out Bill Maher’s sexist comments about Sarah Palin. Right. Just like there are no feminists in Saudi Arabia.

Nope, we all just walk in line with whatever Bill Maher says.

Did we not call him out loud enough for this doorknob or something?

This is hilarious STOP OPPRESSING DUDEBROS AND SAUDI ARABIA WITH HILARITY.

The best part is that’s he’s wearing an “I’m With Stupid” t-shirt with the arrow pointing at his crotch.

    Sort of.

In the perennial question of “how to deal with trolls” I tend to vote for “laugh at them.”

It may not be any more effective, but at least it’s more fun, and from the looks of it some women who’ve had more than their share of shit splashed their way at least got some grins out of this time around. So I’m smiling.

Well, that and raising a decent little sauvignon blanc to y’all. Good hunting, ladies.

I’ve got to take exception to this one tiny bit of the exchange. The irony Rebecca was going for bites a bit close to body shaming, and requires disregarding that you cannot judge right or wrong on either end of the scale of subjective beauty.

    @throwaway, extra beefy super queasy,

I didn’t read it that way. I assumed it was a reference to the expression on his face (which can ebe read as smug.)(Though to be fair it’s easy to project emotions on to faces with neutral expressions.)

@6- That comment refers to his expression, not his looks. Just as when some quack told me that he “could see by (my) face that (I am) depressed.” I don’t have features that look like depression, but the expressions of utter boredom and “you are so full of shit” apparently combine to look like someone who is depressed, per that individual.

Those are actually on the Skeptical Robot (i.e. Rebecca’s) table. And they’re funny!

    @6,

I read that as referring to facial expression/body language, too. In fact, I think the guy’s expression in the photo could be a dictionary illustration for Just Asking Questions — complete disingenuousness with a thin veneer of faux ingenue.

  14. 14

Fair enough. I suppose that makes sense that face is interchangeable with expression.

I’m sure the guy in the Romney/Ryan shirt is very concerned about women’s rights.

Also, he must simply have been unaware of the fact that the panelists denounced Maher.
I’m sure the guy in the Romney/Ryan shirt in summer 2013 is not the type to hang on bitterly and pointlessly to an issue once it’s already been dispensed with.

Thanks! One of these days I will attend one of these cons, they sound awesome. And then I shall obtain my own Tentacle Moustache kit.

On-topic note: how sad is it to attend a conference just to incarnate your comment-section objections? It’s very Vacula-esque. People need some new hobbies, I swear. I like bird-watching; try it, you MRA peeps! It’s very calming. No outrage, lots of color and birdsongs, plenty of exercise and intellectual stimulation. Pretty much everything you guys need.

Wait, he didn’t get tarred and feathered for daring to disagree with feminists?
But I actually I think that Rebecca and Amy would have had a good case to make a report about harassment. Shouting agressively at people surely counts as such.

Oh, you underestimate their ability to see opression everywhere, MrFancyPants… if male birds have to be colorful or sing nicely to attract a mate, well, clearly that’s misandry in action. Those darned hypergamous lady birds…

Hecklers are always assholes, but planted hecklers can be entertaining:

It really, really wouldn’t be difficult to present the anti-feminist position in that manner, may make for a rowdy panel.

Is there an alternate universe where Rebecca Watson and Surly Amy do Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live? I want to go to there.

I think you need, and I would love to participate in, a self-righteousness rapid response squad.

WHY DON’T FEMINISTS CARE ABOUT SAUDI ARABIA?

WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT GAYS BEING EXECUTED IN UGANDA?

WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT PETA KILLING KITTENS THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO SAVE?

WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT VOTER SUPPRESSION?

WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT BEE COLONY COLLAPSE?

WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT SCHOOL LUNCHES?

WHY DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT THIS PAPER CUT I GOT ON THE CORNER OF MY MOUTH THAT EVERYONE SAYS LOOKS LIKE HERPES BUT TOTALLY ISN’T?

We could have T-shirts (SRRRS) and just follow the volume!

Okay I wouldn’t wear a T-shirt, because I’m old and they make me look fat, although I don’t have man boobz, yet, .. like.. some. . people. . .

  25. 25
    smhll

Well, now I want to go out and buy T-shirts. AND I want to read snappy summaries of whatever research there is about why people care about some issues and not others. (I forward every good article I read on voter suppression to my husband because it is his #1 issue at the moment. I can’t get him to care about who said what to whom on the atheist internet.) (Easier to care about individuals than populations?)
