Vatican vows to fight equality

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Vatican is determined to fight to limit marriage exclusively to heterosexuals, calling the privileged status of heterosexuals “an achievement of civilization.”

“It is clear that in Western countries there is a widespread tendency to modify the classic vision of marriage between a man and woman, or rather to try to give it up, erasing its specific and privileged legal recognition compared to other forms of union,” Father Federico Lombardi, said in a tough editorial on Vatican Radio.

Hmm, special privileges for people like us, with vigorous enforcement of laws excluding people who are not like us. Where have I heard that before?

And what would a bigoted rant be without vague, irrational threats of future misfortune?

Lombardi’s editorial on Vatican Radio, which is broadcast around the world in some 30 languages, called the votes myopic, saying “the logic of it cannot have a far-sighted outlook for the common good”.

Lombardi, who is also the Vatican’s chief spokesman as well as director of Vatican Radio and Vatican Television, said there was “public acknowledgement” that “monogamous marriage between a man and woman is an achievement of civilization”.

Which of course is why Lombardi himself, like all Catholic clergy, is required to abstain from marriage. Marriage, as an achievement of civilization, isn’t holy enough to be fitting for the priesthood, but it’s too holy for gays. Or something. But at least he’s open and honest about wanting to discriminate against gays and obtain special privileges exclusively for heterosexuals.

Some more pearls of wisdom from another pedophile protector living under thr skirts of an old nazi who takes care of them all. I have always said the rcc is most foul, evil institution on earth and has been for the last 2000 years

The Nazi thing is annoying and inaccurate. Ratzinger didn’t have any more choice in joining the Hitler-Jugend than you have in breathing. So, just hang him for the crimes he actually commited, there are more than enough of them.
But you’re making it easy for people who defend him to brush aside all your critique effortlesly, just like people do when somebody starts their critique about Obama by saying he’s a muslim.

      • BCat70 says

That is flat out wrong- Ratzinger may not have had much choice about joining the Hitler Youth, but certainly more choice that breathing. Further, he has never repudiated his or his churches many abuses in collaboration with the Reich. This is something that nobody seems to really get- Godwin’s Law doesn’t apply to people who don’t feel bad about actual Nazism, great or small.

Also, Obama actually is not Muslim and never was, and it would not make a difference if he had been. The Pope was part of the Reich, hasn’t recanted or apologized, and that is a huge difference.

If Lombardi had looked at a calendar he would have seen that it is 2013 not 1013 – I know, easy mistake to make; RCC Inc executives do it all the time.

Other great achievements of civilization: Hanging out with friends, avoiding or fighting enemies, play, promises, and dinner.

Other cultural changes that the Vatican has previously vowed to fight against include Islam, Protestantism, Capitalism, Feminism, and Democracy.

The Vatican really does not have a good success rate when it comes to “fighting against change”.

    Catholics are also against divorce.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church Defines Divorce:

Divorce is a grave offense against the natural law. It claims to break the contract, to which the spouses freely consented, to live with each other until death. Sacramental marriage is the sign of the covenant of salvation, to which divorce does incredible injury. Contracting a new union, even if it is recognized by civil law, adds to the gravity of the rupture: the remarried spouse is then in a situation of public and permanent adultery. If a husband, separated from his wife, becomes involved with another woman, he is an adulterer because he makes that woman commit adultery; and the woman who lives with him is an adulteress, because she has drawn another’s husband to herself.

Furthermore, the Catechism states that divorce is immoral because “it introduces disorder into the family and into society. This disorder brings grave harm to the deserted spouse, to children traumatized by the separation of their parents and often torn between them, and because of its contagious effect which makes it truly a plague on society.”

Yet you don’t hear them shouting so loudly about divorce anymore. Give them another 50 years or so – gay marriage will still be against the Church, but they’ll have given up on trying to keep it out of secular society. In the western world, at least…

    Very sad.

Even worse, priestly celibacy in the Roman Catholic Church has nothing to do with faith. The non-spiritual historical reason that Catholic priests cannot marry is that the Catholic Church was busy grabbing land and property in the Middle Ages and didn’t want to deal with hereditary claims by the offsprings of any priestly marriage.

    No marriage for priests.

    No claims on Church property.

    Easy-peasy.

  7. jnorris says

The only real way to know if the Vatican is against same-gender marriage is if they put resources into fighting it. Did they increase the number of priests in Canada to reconvert the faithful and overturn same-gender marriage? Will they Put more priest and open new churches in American blue states to fight equality? Answer: no. But they will increase their fundraising efforts on this issue.

DD: “And what would a bigoted rant be without vague, irrational threats of future misfortune?”

I’ve recently started asking the doomsayers (Obama haters, gay haters, atheist haters, etc.) what the predicted outcome will be of our not heeding their warnings. As I think that a prediction that can’t be measured is worthless, I ask them to be as specific as they can be in their predictions.

It’s rewarding how silent things usually become after that.

How low do you have to set the bar to make deciding to spend the rest of your life together (until divorce) an achievement of civilization?

Every article about news from the Vatican Leadership ought to have the same headline: “Ancient Men’s Club struggles to prove relevance in modern world that has passed it by.”

I for one somewhat hope the current pope keeps on his spree of insane rhetoric and immoral, hateful spending of Church funds. It’s driving people out faster than I otherwise would have thought possible. The harms from the spending and rhetoric, however, dial back my fervency.
