Violence and lack of belief

With the recent shootings at the movie theater and the Sikh temple, a lot of people are pointing fingers at unbelief, and saying that the reason we have so much violence today is because we’ve lost the faith that used to guide us, that sense of supernatural reward and punishment that helped us resist evil and do good.

You know, they might have something. I mean, there’s a pretty definite pattern here. Not just the two most recent gunmen, but any number of violent criminals before them, are men who have lost the simple faith they once had in Santa Claus, who “knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake.” I’m sure that if they had only held on to their original, childlike belief in an all-seeing Father Christmas, making a list and checking it twice, they’d have never done anything so terrible.

It just goes to prove that Santa actually exists, doesn’t it.

“knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake.”

Isn’t this sentence contradictory? Beeing good for goodness sake should explicitely not require an external observing agent, shouldn’t it?

Like guide us into the Thirty-years War, the Inquisition, Witch Burning (a fair cop there though), the murder of Hypatia, most of the Old Testament, and so on and so on.
All done with God on their side, though (I suspect) not Santa (anagrams notwithstanding) and that you may not be barking up the right chimney here with your hypothesis.

No believer in Santa Claus has ever committed mass murder. Their most dangerous weapon is a BB gun. I’m still concerned about how he knows when we are sleeping. Sounds creepy.

Seriously, though. A good portion of the world’s violence is based directly on religion, not lack of religion.

Even if, as in the case of the United States and its psychopathic elites, the “religion” is worship of Mammon, to me “religion” (or unthinking, blind beliefs in the supernatural, be it a “god” or the “free” market) dominates the sphere of violence.

He sees you when you’re sleeping
    He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
    And when you masturbate.
